I am not sure. Think about what type of terrain you have and how much you will you do. Small fields are better for smaller lighter dogs that can turn in time. Bigger game needs bigger dogs. If you are used to colli a colli lurcher might do really well in your hands? Then somekind of 3/4houndxcolli would be perfect. Terriers and salukis can be bugging.

Anyone use "liquid plaster" for toes/nails on dogs?
Lennard replied to Lennard's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I used it on the dogs nailrims and it makes a film...dog does not like spraying the stuff, cold and nasty, so I dabbed it on. On my own nails it is not very persistent, the thin film kind of scales off... L -

I'm talking about skin/tissue damage around the nails...maybe the stuff can be used for preventing sandfoot/nailbed infection as it makes a polymer layer. I bought some this afternoon and tried it around my nails and it does make a shiny film on my nail rims but not very thick...multiple applications with a small paintbrush might do it...? L -

Yeah ok in case of a real damaged nail I don't see a use either. But for preventing dirt getting under or in the nail rim or treating minor tarmac burns so you can use the dog the next day? L -
Galgos...chorts (russian salukis). L

Maybe he's not ready yet...be patient and give him more runs with other dogs to build confidence. How old is the dog? Quit eating foxes in the mean time L

Yeah I'm fit. I bike to work which is 4 miles...I bike back home 4 miles...I take the dogs to the supermarket 3 miles, back 3 miles...I live near the coast so there is a decent wind most of the times. On a normal supermarket mission I unleash the dogs in a safe place and run with them a bit to play, when I go after my dog my bitch helps me to get him and the dog likes that and starts challenging both of us. When I am home at 8 I don't have the urge to play badminton or something. Bike is ideal, pretty fast, easy to hide, takes you everywhere in this flat country with a lot of bicycle lane

Years ago when I was hunting in the tropics the song Dancing Queen by Abba was again popular...so I found myself in the jungle that was lit up by occasional lightning and gas lamps, surrounded by spanish speaking cowboys, running after hounds in the mud...with Dancing Queen repeating in my head... Both Frank. I never go really far cause I need to know the terrain really well. When it is too far away it doesn't pay for me to scout it a couple of times...but I have bicycles in more places L

All my missions are on the bicycle...the max I go is about 5 miles away...much further and the dogs are too tired to give many runs, they also have to walk back next to the bike. I am happy with say 10 hares and 30 rabbits per year from various locations... L

L.S., A long time ago I saw a website where people put up pictures of how worn and torn their old wax coats are. Do you know where to find it? cheers L

Yeah start with a planch of sorts 10 inches high in a doorway and increase the hight slowly and command and praise them when they scramble over it. Take damn good care that you or yours don't trip!. When they got the idea go and jump easy obstacles outside. Don't overdo it it has to stay fun. L

Advice wanted on a first Lurcher
Lennard replied to yorkshirelass's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ah when he is capable then it does not really matter. I would get a whippet or whippet lurcher...whippets are pleasant and a handy size and most are pretty game. L -
Advice wanted on a first Lurcher
Lennard replied to yorkshirelass's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hmm dogs for kids to me is a bad idea...I wouldn't give a young dog to a kid...kids tend to be impatient and harsh to say the least or not strong enough. Get an older (2-5 years) dog that is stable and not aggressive and obedient and game and not too big. Finding such a dog is an effort in itself. Best would be if you got a dog and train it and let the young one join the fun with you keeping the responsability for the training and general handling. Or make friends with lurcher people and let him join them. Who knows they have older dogs looking for homes that you can get to know. L -
I would refrain from using Ivomec on dogs unless you really have to. For mange/scabies you also have another option...lindane. It is probably illegal for veterinary purposes as it is really persistent in the environment and really bad for fish and non target bugs. But it is still used for humans (scabies) as it is damn effective and and pretty non toxic...ask befriended general practioners... L

What do you reckon........Rottweiler x Lurcher
Lennard replied to Miss Tarka's topic in General Talk
If it is such a cross then it will be a good dog for someone...not for coursing or lamping rabbits maybe but big chance it will be a healthy companion/protection dog. L -
Nice find. Can't you just force one bullet out and see if the powder still ignites "fast" with a proper fuse to it? L

Yep TOMO, that's the galgo. The pic is from January. A lean and fast dog, jumps, retrieves (more or less) and very game. I'll try to get some fresh pics... Don't know how he is bred, his mom is a confiscated spanish bitch that proved to be pregnant when transported to here. L

That is crappy! There are so few rabbits left, no shit. But were there many 10 years ago?

Nee, ik bestrijd midden in de winter 1 keer met oxaalzuur. I hoop voor je dat alles goed overwintert dan heb je volgend jaar zat bijen. Die 2 grote gaan een leuke bak honing halen in april als het weer meezit. But..on topic...do you have a ferret or friends with a ferret?

Where we come from we have a ritual to start a fight: if you can keep your dick hard for half an hour standing in a barrel with cold water with at least 3 witnesses present you can hit first. Most of us are pretty hard... HH: oh yeah you are in the east. More crops and less wind, more forest. Nice. I ben net min of meer klaar met inwinteren, de bijen staan er goed bij, veel sneeuwbes dracht met al dat warme en natte weer, 9 volken waarvan een paar vrij grote. (Finished preparing the bees for winter, 9 hives, they look nice, good stores of honey and sugar) L

Muntjacs in Holland
Lennard replied to Bramp's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Bram, are you still on here? Do you have access to roadkill data of the Netherlands? ...er zijn meer hollandse biologen hier...wanneer is je verslag af? L -
Sorry to hear that HH. Where are you more or less? In the East? Here, close to the coast, the rabbits came back to full force in the last 5 years. During the 90ties you only saw a few in the dunes but nowadays I stop counting after 50 in 30 minutes at night. Also places like Neeltje Jans and parts of the Maasvlakte are crawling with rabbits. The dunes also look the way they used to look when I was young, very little grass and more dune-roses and reendeer moss, they have a big impact on the vegetation. Also in some spots in Brabant (Uden, Roosendaal) have a good population I have
