  1. Speculating... dogs cool through skin, evaporation of tongue saliva, lungs or sweat of their feet I guess... So if it works, which I doubt...it should increase saliva production or dilate veins in the skin or something...? L
  2. Leveller, How does one hunt rabbits with a "slow" scent pack...do you ferret them out when they go to ground? cheers, L

    Exotic

I don't normally post stuff like this...it is slightly 18+ plus but so exotic worht checking. Imagine living in a culture that has shows like this...look at the crowd present and the graphics between the actions. Interesting. http://www.machovideo.com/article.php?article=26

  5. The newt on the tile is a Triturus vulgaris male, the males have conspicuous spots and the females are uniform brown grey with an orange belly. The other newt pic looks like this species too. Don't know what the English name is, here it's called small newt or common newt. L

    huge rabbits

Belgium?...I read somewhere that a Belgian breeder has them. Don't know if it is fake... L
  7. Dear all (American members!), The anti-hound hunting crowd has discovered coursing in California, made effort to get it banned and quickly came up with a bill: http://iteamblog.abc7news.com/2006/02/anti...omment-14626763 Be aware and take action, write your congressman, get the issue in the open in a polite and responsible way! Kind regards, Lennard
  8. Thing is that a lot of the native hare catchers (Spain) and some salukis I've seen have a short very thin tail that reaches a bit bit over the half of the hind leg and they catch hares. The more "greyhoundy" types have long "thick" tails that reach almost to the ground and they catch hares too. Would it be that short tailed types are more suited for real open terrain and the short tail is a "result" of breeding for stamina...can you generally say that dogs with long tails are faster? L
  9. Does the majority of top catching/coursing dogs have long tail types or short ones? Would tail lenght affect performance? Any ideas? L
  10. IMHO, a bitch in heath is indeed pretty inconvenient. During the heath itself and the following weeks mine is slow and skinny because she doesn't eat normally. Say she can't run for 2-3 months per year...there is something to say for spaying to get a more uniform performance maybe. If a bitch has to be spayed I would do it after the first or second season to let her mature mentally...I've seen bitches spayed before the first season and they keep being puppies in a way. But sometimes spaying can't be avoided...those who have rescue dogs have to put up with it. Anyone out there who
  12. The notion that a Rhodesian ridgeback is a sighthound is a relatively new one and FALSE in my opinion...it looks related to the rest of the scent hounds and was never used for coursing or catching "sighthound" style. Maybe there is sighthound in the make up of the breed? Some well bred ones are fast for sure and game too so I guess they might be usefull... L
  13. I'm not in favor of shooting big predators for sport personally but came across this video...would have been a real decent and deserved accident... http://www.teamnatural.com/modules.php?set...=view_photo.php

    piss funny

hmm is it real or is it ment to be satire? Hard to tell these days on dutch/flemmish television....
  15. Looking good! Black dog is a stunner too! Leuk man een landgenoot hier! Ikzelf zit bij de kust en heb een podenco cross voor konijn:
  16. Thanks Thunderbelly Oh yeah...VT borders Quebec...the rules will be different there. My near future wife lives in NH and I am moving there early spring, other states are not an option but maybe I can persuade her to move to jackrabbit country. I might consider shooting a deer for the fridge but what REALLY makes me tick is catching hares/rabbits with dogs. L
  17. In the future I might be living in NH and have a US non-resident small game licence...Canada is close from NH/VT... If I go to Canada as a foreigner...do you know what would be my options? L
  18. This company offers a good collection of dvds: http://timberwolffalconry.homestead.com/timberwolf.html But for some reason they don't provide a creditcard/paypall option...does anyone have experience ordering their merchandise? L
  19. Biking home from the late shifts the last month I saw a hedgehog almost every other night...normally they are hibernating but October/November this far have been record breaking warm here, at least 5 degr. above average. My bees are flying still too, normally they "hibernate" when temp goes down under 12 degr. L
  20. Brilliant find Good that they give English translations as well! L
  21. Got the most remarkable (well for me) information today...all hunting with dogs was made illegal here (Netherlands) in 1924. I knew that. But according to transcripts of local law and interviews I've seen, lamping as defined catching rabbits with a longdog by aid of a lamp has been legal on the island of Terschelling untill the use of lamps was made illegal under European law in 1999. So for some freak reason legal use of longdogs survived a ban for 70 years on a dutch island. Could this happen with harecoursing in the UK, is THE LAW the same everywhere? What about these weird grassy
  22. good site for hound pics...interesting NOFCA material on there, also recent pics from Dutch Salmon and his dogs... http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.d...orefront?c=080I L
  23. Now that we're talking about it...I've come across more people/cultures around the world that hang or strangle dogs. I believe they did that in Scotland. I am sure they do it in parts of south America, they even have special "strangeling knots". They do it in parts of the Artic. Somewhere there must be some kind of eerie folklore related to the hanging but I don't know what and why...
  24. Recommended as hare dogs IF you get a good one. Saluki like, LONG feet, selective hearing, sweet pets. The arabs brought salukis into Spain and the Celts had their greyhound type so its maybe a mix. Good ones are very sound, they don't damage or don't get sick. Spain is harsh on dogs, only the good ones stay alive more or less. Coursing is pretty popular and there are a lot of these around. Rescue centers are full of them. L
