  1. How heavy are your dogs? How much exercise do they get? How cold is it at your place? 10 UK pounds would make up to say 5 kilo's? That would be a bit meager maybe...my 20 kilo pup eats a small kilo (bit less than 2 pounds?) per day when on tripe and such so about 5-7 kilos per week. L.
  2. Unspayed bitches can be out of shape for months each year with the whole heath and maybe false pregnancy thing. But both sexes can fight and piss you off generally If you want a certain type or breed than there is a size difference, dogs are bigger and heavier. For me, looking for a average animal of 25 kg, I would buy a male track whippet or a female grey. But the sex doesn't determine how good a dog is...its parents and you do that. L.
  3. The UK ban is recent and though there are a lot of antis there are a lot in favour of hunting too. Some of us live in places where catching game with dogs has been banned a long time ago and where the overlarge majority is really anti-hunting. There are not even forums like the one we are on now but that does not mean that people are not using dogs to catch game. I can understand both Lucky's and others views and the fact that the moderators don't want to deal with antis or law enforcing people. Lucky if I were you I would make a nice book...you only need one disclaimer for histori
  4. Thanks all! Midlands is in Sep next year...I'll keep that in my head for planning my free days... L.
  5. Mine is doing pretty good. Completely housebroken, has a good recall, retrieves tennis balls half of the time, jumps on command, goes to his bed on command. Starts licking my hands instead of only biting them. Still interested in sheep but much better then 2 months ago. Had a couple of cuts but nothing serious. Pic of him is in a pic-of-pup topic some time ago. L.
  6. Nah if my pup would be jumping up I would do what I always do when the pup does something I really don't want...grab it by its neck skin and say harshly "No leave it" (or coarser language) while giving a firm shake. If the pup pisses me off by going on after a few corrections, I roll it suddenly over while shaking in a harsh way, play up a good harsh voice and keep it down for half a minute when it struggles. Worked till so far but my dog is pretty docile, I can imagine more bolsterous pups seeing it as a game. L.
  7. Don't know if it is possible where you live but I would take the pup as often as convenient to a "kiddy farm" where one can pet and feed the sheep/goats. The sheep/goats there are used to visitors and other animals and probably are indifferent or stand ground when your pups sniffs at them. If the pup is too wild tell it off without making a fuss or distract it with a toy or whatever. If you repeat that exercise sheep will become "normal". Worked for my older bitch and seems to work for my pup. L.
  8. Don't know how it is bred poacher...the mom is a confiscated spanish bitch that proved to be pregnant when imported to here...black and white one is mainly podenco (ibizan hound)...just type podenco into google or check older posts by me for native pics and you will see a lot of them ears L.
  9. Hi all, If you were in the UK next summer for limited time, what would be the "best"/biggest game fair or lurcher show to go to? cheers, L.
  10. Bigger and faster than the black & white bitch. Housebroken and good recall. L.
  11. Vet Wrap...good stuff... Rhys A, do you tape the nail directly to the skin or do you put anything in between nail and skin? cheers, L.
  12. Agewise I would say yes but it depends on how much exercise it gets normally...my bitch who does between 10-15 miles next to the bike regularly walked a distance hike of 20 miles without any problems. She fell asleep in my arms immediately in the bus back though. L
  13. The question on skinning was on my mind too...how do you do that? L.
  14. It has been over 10 years since I've prepared chicken (and iguanas for that matter) for cooking. I need to refresh my knowledge in case I obtain a duck... I remember cutting the head of and making a long slit down the throat to pull the innards out with the fingers, also making a slit near the "anus" and cut the last piece of bowel out followed by holding the chicken in a pan with real hot water and then pluck the feathers and get the small stumps off with the gas flame. I can probably do the same with a duck...or is there a better method? Was the order of things correct, first clean a
  15. The ponds around here are full of bread fed urban ducks. There has always been some joking about chinese serving them in restaurants. I wonder...would there be a taste difference between "wild" ducks and these ducks, did anyone on here try them? L.
  16. Hi all, Recently I ate something called "onion jam". It was THE tastiest side dish I've had this year, here they serve it as a kind of chutney like side dish to game and meat pastry...the receipe is simplicity itself so I'll put it up: - 500 gms red onions in thin slices - 20 gms butter - 100 gms sugar - 150 ml red wine - 1 tablespoon balsamico vinegar - (some rosemary is optional) Take a thick-bottomed pan...put the butter in and brown slightly...next put the sugar in and heat on a medium fire until the sugar starts colouring...then put in the onion rings...stir well and ke
  17. Thanks...I'll use the Vermox tabs for myself and try the online purchasing... L.
  18. Dear all, At the drugstore I saw a human dewormer with active ingredient mebendazol for just 3,50 a dose. For my dogs dewormers I pay over twice as much...and I know that some dog dewormers also contain mebendazol...so I intend to buy them, crush them up and give the calculated amount to my dogs. Anyone using human dewormers for their dogs? L.

    Not very happy

Block 'm BG. But...with the majority of this forum being from the UK...who says you are not a big 55 year old Scotsman wearing a kilt...you never know on the internet...
  20. What a wankers. They must be fit though with the amount of walking they do. Isn't there some kind of anti terrorism law that forbids people to cover their faces? L.
  21. Thanks Tarmac, "that ain't no clumsy puppy anymore" ...nice hound! L.
  22. One for J.D. I was wondering, how are Charva (Chava?) and his brother doing? They should be stunning hounds by now. L.
