  1. Here i go showing how naive i am. Yheres no problem in putting a ferret down after a rat?
  2. I'm jealous thats a cracking job. mine are in a chicken coop at the minute so i'll be on the look outfor an old shed now
  3. Good advice all thanks. I had cut them open before and pulled out there guts just leaving the meat and goodies, but i hadn't removed the kibble which i did last night to try and force them onto it. SUCCESS - just got back now to find that they have demolished the last squirrel, bones and all just leaving the jacket. They appear to be doing it in the bedding box which cant be the best spot, any suggestions ie wirethe leg to a fixed spot?
  4. I have been trying to feed the ferrets with squirrels that I've been catching, but they don't seem to have much interest in eating them, they just drag them into the nesting area (as soon as i give it to them). I was expecting them to leave them outside with the kibble and rip into it, but they just drag into the nest area. Is this normal behaviour? (i'm guessing it is having read an earlier post about rabbit skins) If so is there something I should do to encourage them to eat the squirrel, and should i be tying it to something outside the bedding area for improved hygiene?
  5. I thought the two locators were different and that they were set at different depth ratings, wasn't sure about the collar part but have a feeling they are the same other than collar size, but not certain about that. If the opportunity to put the dog to ground on a fox were to come up then I figured I should be set for that, but maybe not. I was just thinking that if there was something out there that could cover both for less money that it might be a good option. Hegaross, you find that works ok for you, no problems with it? If so i'm gussing I'll be running it that way. Thanks for a
  6. Good news all I need to do is hunt down som of those nodules. THANKS to everyone. I'm just outside of Cardiff, I haven't been out with the ferrets yet, still looking for permissions but should have one or two by end of the week I'm hoping. My better half use to have them as a young girl, but not sure that she actually used them.
  7. We are new to ferreting and are trying to figure the best/least expensive locator before taking the ferts out. In the mean time we have the ferrets inside on a daily basis usually two at a time, and Ive noticed that they really like investigating/playing in bags with items in them. I know Ive seen people use boxes with pingpong balls for them to dive into, but has anyone tried those foam nodules about an inch long used for packaging in a large box. I can't think of any downside to them at the moment but if any one can think of a problem with this please let me know before we try it out.
  8. Has anyone got suggestions on the best bit of kit to use for locating terriers and ferrets? New to both and have the ferrets for the boys and a pup that I want to bring on for ratting and want to get out with the ferrets ASAP, but feel like i wouldnt be acting resposibly if i couldnt locate them I spoke to Deben and they said I needed to purchase a seperate MK3 for both the terrier and the ferts, something i'm going to be struggling to afford I did see something about using avalanche locators but wasn't sure if they would pick up the deben collars for both the terrier and the ferts .
  9. Didn't realise you could take locking ring on and off, that makes that Opinel 6 a practical little knife
  10. Also looking for a ferret box I'm sure theres someone up Merthyr doing them, anybody know about them
  11. Hoping I could find someone local making nets in or around Cardiff area, regularly up and down the valleys anyone know of anyone?
  12. Hope i'm not about to embarass myself, but i thought it was illegal to carry around a knife with a locking blade whatever its length? So even though the opinel is only 7cm it is still illegal to carry around unless on private land? Probably been discussed here previously. Whats a good useful knife for skinning that wouldnt be breaking the law whilst walking to permission? Any thoughts anybody
  13. Both these look good. Had the pleasure of meeting Simon a couple of weeks ago and then met him again while he was doing a demo a week later, so his is a definite and the other looks interesting and not too bad a price on amazons 2nds Thanks for the replys Seany, Duce.
  14. Sorted out for the time being, and thanks to those that PM. My lad is now the proud owners of 4 hobs, (and yes I have a spade). Now we need a permission So anybody know of somewhere around Cardiff, Cowbridge, Llantrisant or further we would be keen to hear from you. Thanks again
  15. Thanks Jamie Your right, my mistake, I knew better, but thanks for pointing it out
  16. Can I put an ebay link in to see what peoples thoughts are on a ferret hutch? or is that something thats not approved of? I was looking to useit as a base for the ferrets in a 6'x3'x6.5' chicken wired frame with a roofed area and it was looking like it had thought of everything and probably cheaper than i could make it for.
  17. Does anybody know where in S E Wales I can get a couple of ferrets that would be suitable for myself and an 11 yr old lad to start working, Looking to have success early on as my lad is really keen and i would hate for him to get put off as a result of a lack of success.
  18. I'm looking for a good book on ferreting that is going to cover all aspects for someone new to it. I'm a bit confused because someone slagged of "Ferrets and Ferreting: Guide to Management by Ian C. Rickard" on a similar topic but didn't really say why, yet on another topic someone was suggesting it was the book to get The other main option looks like "Ferreting: An Essential Guide by Simon Whitehead" which i havn't seen any derogative remarks about. Anybody read them both? any thoughts on best for a fast learning novice?
  19. If you think its easy enough to dig them out I'm happy to give that a shot. I was just worried that the burrows would be interconnected and they would be heading out of one while i was digging another, as you can tell I don't have a clue on the habbits of rats, I was thinking they would hab set ups like rabbits? I just rea somewhere hat they are often quite shallow solitary holes, is that right? If so I'n guessing digging is easier than smoking and gives our Jack a good bit of ractice All comments appreciated
  20. Thanks Paulus How many holes do you think one terrier could cover adequately? Rats would chew thru nets to quickly? If they bolt and we dont get them will they return or will they go looking for new homes?
  21. I'm hoping I can get some advice on catching rats with a single jack russel and net? I had a rat trapped in the house during the night last week. I figured how it got in and have screened that area with ss mesh but on looking around outside I found a rat run beneath the wall and fence into the properties either side of me, and a number of burrows in a flower bed in the next door property. I have a terrier which has done a bit of ratting in the past on a farm, can anyone tell me how many terriers I would need to use if I was smoking out the burrows; more than one I’m guessing, or could I pu
