4 ply flax thats flogged off as hemp.......horrible hairy rubbish
-
got to start somewhere bud, then again its not about the size of the bag that counts its the day as a whole and the enjoyment you get out of it atb andy
-
spun poly is the best thing you can get. as rabbits can only see in monochrome ( black and white) the lighter the net the less chance of the rabbit seeing it and rearing up

AndyKelly replied to STAFFY poacher's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
do you want a vac hob or just a hob? -
i use them for myself all the time. i find it balances the net better than the two rings and was taught this by my old uncle who was a gamekeeper. he said that it was because of the war effort and they has to make the rings go alot further in them days . it also helps with the tangling. they seem to not get caught up as easy as the ones with two rings.

drop boxes are ok in certain situations, if your near to your land and can check them every day its ok but i have other things to do and cannot put the time in with them. the villagers are happy to see me walking around and i agree with tommo its more a sport for me than pest control. what i abhor is the people who drop them and leave the rotten carcasses in them for days. that is bang out of order. unfortunately it happens alot round here and have seen many boxes with rotten rabbits.i have heard people go in hard with the boxes and obliterate rabbit populations. good for land owners........n

decided to give a mate a run out with me today as i have been telling him about my permission and as he seemed eager so i was happy to take him along for a proper northern day out in the field i myself didn't want to wake up at 5am when the alarm went off but, the jack russell has a second instinct when its ferreting day so what with her licking me to death and the wife nagging in my ear i got up and got ready. 7am phone goes and its my mate here a record dash from down the coast in 50 minutes so off we went. was not sure about what he was expecting so when we arrived and i sort of showed

technically hemp these days is not hemp, its a product called 4 ply flax which is higher maintenance than the wife!!!!!! it has to be dried after every ferreting session or it snaps and rots. nylon is ok but tends to pick up alot of debris and can tangle easier whereas spun poly is the bees knees its easily spotted in the field so you dont lose it and can be left wet in the bag and it dries out like new. most people go for a 3ft 6 net witch is the standard length with a few slight variations in size for difficult holes

i can see the reasoning with all these comments being out in the field myself. it was just the fact that some people were working nets 13 wide and it seemed a little short 15 for tight spots seems fair. all i was trying to ask is that when people purchase a net they automatically ask the length but very few people bother asking about the width which i found strange.

0.75 nylon x12 ready to go at £1.50 3ft 6 or 3ft 6 spun poly hi viz orange ready to go x20 if you want can post tomorrow

stay away from any soft wood as they snap really quick, if you use hazel they need to be dried and whittled so its best to cut in november to dry over the winter for use the following season. the best pegs are anything made out of hardwood which will last you years and are tough as granite and not snap

same as me i always start with 1and a half to two then up to 2 and an eighth. my poke nets are 21 meshes wide and i totall agree a net with no bag is only sutible for rats lol

just looking on fleabay this evening and at the different nets on the market. some purse nets are 15 meshes down and 13 meshes wide and am just wondering if people find this ample enough to catch a rabbit?. i was always taught at 3ft 6 the meshes at the widest point would be 17/18 made on a 2 and 1/8th board. now i can see how some net makers are selling there wares at a low price of £1.60 per spun poly purse net. i have always preferred a bigger net as i can dispatch the rabbit without having to extract it from the net. does anyone use these smaller nets and what do you think of them? do

first look out of the season this morning and due to the 'indian summer' of a week i decided to be up at 5 and head off early so i could get a few hours in before the hot weather came in with force. arrived at my ground and was getting out of my car just as it was getting light and a little voice called....'excuse me' thinking i was hearing things i carried on but it called again. i then noticed a little grandma compleate with curlers in a chink of open door. 'can i help you love?' i asked. them bloody buggers are up by the hole in the tree she responded, can you go get em please?. chuckling

always done inch and a quater on request vin - but they are pricey as they take double the time and double the spun poly lol -
just to let you all know i have a new product in . its a 0.75 cross braid nylon ( its an updated z nylon ) its great quality, tough wearing and only £1.50 per net!!!!!! only downside i can see at this moment in time is that it only comes in white - i can counteract this by putting gold, red, purple or green draw cord through it so people can recognize there nets whilst out in the field from other peoples can email pics if needed the net has a silky feel to it and has been dragged through brambles, seems to pick up less debris than the z nylon . it is a tough product i gave it to the jack ru
