  1. females come into season so you should really think about jill jabs or mating - the downside of the mating is that there will be kits to rehome. you can get them nutered but it is costly ( between 30 and 60 quid depending on vets) . male ferrets are easier to keep but if they get too big they can be a bugger to work . jills do tire easy and need to be rested or not worked all day - best to have a couple of crews of 2 or more if your out in the field all day.hope this helps.
  2. stuck with the old nets in the bag dave - ain't got time to make any for myself at this rate ill have alot of grey hairs and a walking stick before i get a new bag of nets for myself.....not that i'm complaining lol
  3. after ferreting a farm with local permission i've realized as the farmer gains confidence with me a new field, quarry or extra bit of land seems to crop up in conversation!.im beginning to love it when he says 'don't you know you can go down yonder to that bit over/down or round there'. when out ferreting yesterday this conversation cropped up so off i toddled to the new bit down yonder.after a considerable walk i arrived in my usual state (puffing and wheezing) to find a large area of huge warrens that had been untouched for a long time.the innocent looking holes seemed an easy start so down
  4. been ferreting since i was 12 - im 51 next month never used a ferret finder and have no inkling to do so and i have NEVER lost a ferret either. back when i started out ferret finders weren't invented
  5. just a mk1 box alone on ebay went for £56 if thats any help
  6. baby - blame the missus!,babs, tiny, sandy, fred, ginger, batty and weed she named them all and can tell them apart but to me there just ferrets!
  7. magnum nets do knotless there really good as i have bought some off him
  8. wolverhampton, yorkshire, norfolk and colchester have recently had verified cases of canine distemper that have wiped peoples ferrets out please be vigilant
  9. put the decrements of the ferret shed down when you clean the ferrets out - we had a massive problem with rats this year at the chicken sheds and we were told that they cant stand the smell of ferret poo - we were slightly skeptical about it but hey ho gave it a try.we have not had a rat in the allotment for 6 months!it seems that they really do not stand the smell and it does work
  10. all the worry of mixy - it comes,it goes .and there is always rabbits left to run around! there will be bunnys causing havoc long after im dead and buried. agree that they seem to be recovering quicker from mixy these days but annoyed that ferreters will not pick up rabbit carcasses that have mixy or have been shot and left - we all need to look after the ground we ferret. i always make sure i take a spare bag and get rid.
  11. if there only four months old just put small amounts of meat in mabey your giving them a little to much? any meat after 4 hours begins to become infected with bacteria so be careful that the meat is not going off cause this can lead to food poisoning
  12. great box but agree you need more or bigger airholes to let more air in matey the ferrets need a good waft of cool air to chill em down
  13. been out a fair few times recently and unfortunatly ive had a few in young too too mild need a good frost
  14. i make em in all colours - the brighter ones go to the people who get sick of losing nets in the field, the traditional colours, greens, reds and terecotts seem to be favoured by the 'older generation' a nets a net as long as it catches a rabbit who cares! the thought goes as a rabbit sees in black and white the lighter the colour the less chance the rabbit has of seeing it over the hole as it is being bolted - but then again when a ferret is up its backside is it gonna bother what colour it sees over the hole?
  15. don't like hot weather? ferrets do not have any sweat glands and cannot sweat if your ferret overheats in this kind of weather it can bring on a diabetic coma where the ferret can froth at the mouth and die- if you HAVE to go out in this heat make sure you take a spray bottle and regally spray your ferret to bring there body temperature down and leave a few biscuits in the box so there blood sugar stays up or go out early morning or late evening when it is cooler
  16. spun nylon comes in heavy guage up to 12z (z) equates to pounds of rabbit but most people are now using spun polyester which is 4z (40lb) breaking strain. the advantage of the spun polyester is that it is brightly coloured with the rabbits being colour blind the barely see the net plus the ferreter wont leave a brightly coloured net lying in a field as it is easily spotted to collect.i use heavy one inch welded rings on mine as this adds to the weight and make my nets 42 inches long and 18 meshes wide as that works for the north east of uk.i do make them and there £2.50 for the length stated a
  17. i get 14 but i make mine 42 inches long and 18 meshes wide
  18. nice to see other 'old fashioned ferreters' that realized ferreting was going on way before modern technology was invented!
  19. never used a ferret finder- been ferreting 40 years and have never lost one of my ferrets use the good old fashioned tried and tested liner method with the dogs and have always retrieved a 'laid up' ferret was taught by an old fashioned gamekeeper uncle who told me to keep a dog totally separate for the use of 'lining' not to mate it with any of my jills or put it in a cage with any other ferret. this keeps the dog keen and able to shift other ferrets when laid up works for me and saves me a fortune!
  20. was offered 15 acres of land at alston so me and my bud jumped in the van and toddled off at 7am yesterday full of anticipation as to what to expect.when we arrived it was a big disapointment the land was ok but for all the man said he was over-run we soon worked out the rabbits were running over a beck at the bottom of the land and as the beck was full the little bleeders were over the other side sticking there tounges out at us.so after an hour we jumped in the van and went to frosterly.my mate had the good idea to drive the van up the hill and it fell of a rutted track and had to wait two
  21. hi nets are 42 inches long and 16 meshes wide all nets are on heavy good quality welded rings with 2m braided drawcoard.all colors available and email me if your interested £25 FOR 10 +P&P £3
  22. stumbled along to agouti by pure accident whilst looking for bargains on the net.quality stuff, fast and efficient service and a very pleasurable chap will not go anywhere else now
  23. can do if interested got a mega neon yellow/bright orange/ and white fleck ready to go couldnt even lose them in the dark!
  24. have a go mate you aint got nothing to lose albite £15 or so to buy the materials. there are many ways of making nets im afraid, the skilled may start off with 8 stitched loops onto the rings and increase to 18/20 then decrease back down or the other way though not as effective and not as much bag is to start off with 16/18 and work straight down. if you can watch someone making them you would get a better idea rather than watching videos. but shop around for the materials as spun poly can range in price from £20 to £10 depending on the supplier
  25. please do not feed your ferret milk - they are lactose intolorant and this will cause the diarrhea it is not the way forward.years ago everyone used to feed milk but it has since been proven that the intolerance is there and you are poisoning the ferret!
