  1. That's what got me thinking. Even if it was £500 a time thats crazy money to win from a dog. Must be great. I supose it is like any betting though, great when you win but murder when you loose.
  2. After reading the thread on the £10,000 offer for the dog it got me thinking about the value of matches. What sort of money would the guys run for? Was there a minimum wager or is there an average? I take it it needs to be a decent value to make it worth the traveling etc. I have never owned a match dog but would love to have one I felt was good enough to have a wager on. I have a pup from CN at the moment that is going to be puerley a day dog and I am hoping she is good enough that I can have a few matches with her but only time will tell. Whats the biggest sum of money
  3. That is a lot of money but if it is that good I would be keeping it and running it against other dogs for decent money. If he is running for a reasonable sum he could end up making alot more.
  4. just make sure its locked up well or take it in as you get it thats what worries me, incase someone breaks in and steels it. We dont have a sign above the door but we are in an industrial estate so some one could go gown at night and make as much noise as they want breaking in. I know its silly but it feels like you get more money if you take it in bulk. Technically I could go in every week and save the money but if you get £50 you end up spending it. If you save it and get £600 you are more likely to stick it away.
  5. Its amazing how it adds up. I have a small heating company and alot of our work is upgrading old back boilers / heat only boilers to combi boilers so we get a cylinder with every one we do. I used to give all the scrap away to the scrap collecters until i found out the prices. We save up all the old copper pipe that comes out too. Had 5 cylinders and four bags of pipe cuttings etc last week and got nearly £600 for it. I save it all up now and also keep the old steel boilers, radiators etc as I have to pay to dump it. We rented a lock up that I was going to make into a wee o
  6. What level of obediance should an average trainer expect from a couring bred pup from these lines? My pup is 12 weeks and seems bright, and is learning well. However, occassionally I have her in the garden and whistle but she just ignores me. I read that Saluki types can be tricky but wondered if most people get instant recall etc.
  7. What is the actual charge that results in the driving ban? Would be interested to find out exact circumstances. The law is diferent up here and we have the right to roam act so by law you can walk your dogs anywhere in Scotland providing you are not causing damage. To be prosicuted they have to prove that you are hare coursing which if you are smart enough is very difficult to do. Would be worth reading up on the exact law but I can't see how you can be banned from driving. The car getting crushed and dogs distroyed make sence but if you park the car legally and dont commit a driv
  8. Cheers for reply's. Got local farmer to pull out with tractor. Cheers
  9. Hello, Just a long shot but anyone in Edinburgh / Midlothian area with a 4 wd looking to earn a bit cash to pull my Discovery out of the mud? Basically I pulled over today to let a learner past and to cut a long story short had to turn into a dirt track. Went up the track and tried to turn but the car slipped and I now totally stuck. The track upto it is fine but really needs another 4wd to be safe. If anyone can help I will see them okay. Is stuck near Roslin Area. Cheers
  10. Thanks for all the replys. I ended up buying a pup from the Wolfie litter from Craig Nuttall and am delighted with the pup. Just like to say that it was the first time I met CN and i didn't know what to expect. He was an absolute gent and even gave me £20 back to cover my fuel. Went down hoping to gey a dog pup but ended up changing mind and going for a Cream Bitch who is a wee stunner. Will get pics up soon. Thanks to Karlsberg, Chester, Moll and Snoopdog for all your help. Nice to see that there is still plenty decent folks in the game.
  11. Hi Whin,

Just noticed your message. Thanks for the offer but I ended up getting a pup from Criag Nuttall. Appreciate you getting in touch though.

  12. Hello, Posted this in the wanted section but though more chance of it being noticed on here. I am looking for a Coursing pup. Am in no real rush and will wait for right dog. Does anyone know of any planned litters this year? Would prefer a dog pup. Am just outside Edinburgh but would travel anywhere for right pup. Will be soley a daytime dog. Thank you.
  13. I enjoy the racing and ity is good to see other dogs run. I fully understand that sometimes you get larger dogs in litters. For an example my pup was bred by Parkstone Whippets and the sire was WRCA Evensent. My pup is a dog, 19" 27lbs and his litter mate is 22-23" and 37lbs. It is a cracking dog, bred from one of the top sires in the country but its owner cant race it. He works him and lure courses him and to be fair Mark offered to buy the dog back (Not having a go at Parkstone, they were as surprised as anyone regarding the size of the dog) but it is a pet as well as a worker and no way
  14. Have to agree. i fully appreciate that some lines will throw a larger pup every now and then and thats fair enough but to me 23" is a lurcher. The size doesn't actually bother me but I don't think that 23" whippets should be bred from and sold as KC whippets. People pay good money for whippets and while I always bought mine with working in mind it is good to take them to the racing clubs in the summer. The height limit for bitches is 20" so I was pretty dissapointed that i couldn't race her.
  15. Fair points mate, mike sells pups 200-300 quid, less than a lot of other folk. But your not wrong in what you say. cheers, I paid £150 for the first whippet and £400 each for the other two. All three were healthy and looked after so why the differance in price? If you go on the whippet forum you get some stories about the cost of rearing a litter but anyone who says they dont make money from a large litter of KC reg whippets is crazzy. I actually dont have a problem with people malking a bit of money but be honest and admit it. A good friend of mine has three w
  16. A very interesting debate and to be honest I can see both sides of the argument. I don't think anyone can argue that Mike Brown is passionate about his dogs and that he has bred some excellant pups. I dont have any but from what I read and have seen they are all healthy, well bred whippets. I think most people that have a MB whippet are happy with their dogs but to be honest I think that alot of it has to do with the owners themselves. They take a well bred pup and develope it into a working dog but I am pretty sure that most whippet owners would get similar results had they bought a
  17. What age are the pups? Are they dogs or bitches? Thanks
  18. I was gonna read through all these posts but started to nod off,,,this statement is typical of folk who think they know something but actually dont...whether you go to Hancock or not is up to you but avoid like the plauge anyone who guarantee's a pup will work it's bullshit! Yep. There are no guarantees that any dog will work no mater what the parents are
  19. really like the look of the collie cross. Whipets nice to but the collie really caught my eye.
  20. Always an interesting topic. While Hancocks does not work his dogs directly all his dogs are ex track dogs. The collie's he use are all from working stock (sheep dogs). If you want a guenuine half cross I think you will really struggle to find guenuine working parents. Most greyhounds used are track dogs and I personally dont know any one who works a border or beardie colle. (Not talking about working sheep dogs, I mean working rabbits etc) Another example would be bull crosses. How many people work straight bulls? not many though there is a ready market for a first cross bull
  21. Personally I would go for the warehouse job. It may open other doors for you. I left School 14 years ago at 16 with only standard grades and had a load of dead end jobs. At 19 I got a job in a warehouse for a local plumbers merchant and took it because it was better than the job I had. I worked hard, turned up on time and worked my way up to the sales office, then a branch manager then to an Area manager covering Scotland. I left two years ago to start my own heating company and have never looked back. You only get one shot at life so make the most of it. When I was younger I wante
  22. i think solar panels are the up and coming thing, do you install them? It's something I would like to get into and have mean meaning to look into but we have just been crazy busy for the past two years fitting gas boilers, I hope to become involved with renewables as the government are really pushing them and it is a growing market. I also intend on doing LPG as it means more work in rural areas and no bloody parking tickets in Edinburgh!!
  23. I work for myself. I have a small heating company who carry out boiler installations. I love being my own boss and am really glad I gave it a go. If you are looking to get into a trade I would really recommend becoming a heating engineer if you are looking to retrain. It is expensive and hard to get your gas ticket if you are a new entrant to the trade but it is possible. If you work hard you can make a really good living.
  24. I remember reading that if you have a genuine half cross and put a greyhound over it the litter will usually be pretty even. Think I would be really disappointed if I bought a lurcher thinking I was getting a mixture of what sounds like a great dog on paper and ended up with the equivalent of a collie x saluki. I suppose it is really down the the breeder to think about it before they breed the litter and be honest with the advert. Cheers
  25. Its a tricky one. Personally I think 5 months is far too early to start a dog on rabbit but to be honest I have done it myself. Now I would wait until the dog was 10 months - 12 months and I was happy with the recall. Every dog develops at its own pace and you need to watch and read the individual dog, When I was younger I was far less patient and when you have a pup you are dying to get it started but I think its better to wait a month or two rather than rush it and wish you had waited. Good luck with your dog
