To be honest I think there are two types of poachers. There are the guys who just want a bit sport for themselfs and their dogs and they respect the land and animals they persue. Then there are the ones who don't care about the land they are poaching. Walls and gates get damaged and that's what anoyes most landowners (in my experiance) and I think it's pathetic not to look after the land you are on. I don't have any permission as such, but I do work my dog fairly reguarly. I make sure that there is no damage to property and that i close all gates, respect all livestock etc and I would be v

I never got around to breeding from my terrier and she will be 9 years old in Febuary. Is she to old to breed from? I would like a pup, but would NOT breed from her if it was not safe to do so. Can anyone help with advice on if she is to old to breed from please. Thanks.

When I first started ferreting I was about twelve and we got a pup as a pet at the same time. She was a collie x lab and was bought puerly as a pet but i took her with me when i went ferreting. She turned into a fantastic marking dog and she learned how to pin netted rabbits. She was too heavaly built to catch rabbits in a chase but she caught a few in longer grass. She got a few with mixy but they dont count  She was very obediant and i think that really helped. I say go for it with your lab. As long as you and the dog enjoy it then that's what it's all about (to me anyway)

Just go anyway make sure you respect the land and the farmers wont even know you've been there.

Hi Bud, I have only ever seen one pure saluki working and it belonged to Paul Sager, who i believe was fairly successful with pure Saluki's. I only met him once but he was very plesant. This was about seven or eight years back, but he came up to Brian Plummers kenels when i was there and we ended up taking his pup ferreting Nr Abington. The pup was eight months old and caght a bolted rabbit. It retrieved almost to hand. I was fairly impressed, but have never seen another pure Saluki since.

was this man not just another form of business man ie.selling his pups to feed himself.it seems he died with f..k all,or am i wrong.i read one of his books complete lurcher good informative reading. He was trying to earn a living but he wasn't a shrude buisnessman. Unlike Hancock, Brian kept all his dogs after they had finnished their breeding lifes. Nearly half the dogs living in his kennels were retired breeders who he said had a home for life.

I knew Brian for the last eight years of his life and can honestly say he was one of the most fasinating men i have ever met. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and i have mine. I had read his books but didn't know what to expect. He was very intellegant and had a story or two to tell. Know i don't know if the stories were true or not but i would like to think so. When i knew him he didn't keep any terriers apart from a few lucas's. He was breeding beardie collies, white german shepards, bull mastifs and cavilear spaniels. He had two lurchers "merab and Fedra" but they wer

I just have the one dog at present. a collie lurcher that is a pet that i work. I had a terrier but had to be pts last year and i was gutted. I will get another lurcher when my daughter gets a bit bigger and can appreciate having a puppie. Also, i don't want a puppie making a mess in the house while she is stiil crawling about. I like the idea of having more dogs but i have other hobbies and don't have time to work dogs all the time. Aslo, you can always take a couple of dogs with you when you go out. There is plenty of the room for two dogs in the car but any more than that and i woul

Cheers guys, I was out a couple of weeks back and noticed a few hares running about daft and remembered reading something about hares having mad breeding habbits. I presumed that would meen the season is over and i would rather see extra hares next season than try and get one now and end up killing a pregnant female. Ah wel, there's always next year! On the plus side, i have now found a few areas that i know contain hares a short distance from my house. I've been mostly into rabbiting and only gave my lurher her first run on hares at x-mas time. However, she damaged one of her toes

When should you stop coursing hares? I presume they start to breed round about now and i was wondering if it's to late to course them ( don't want to be unsporting ) regards minion

I remember reading an article on lurcher breeding saying that if you bred two half collie greyounds to each other then you would get a mixed litter. ie some pure grey, some pure collie and some half collie grey. I was wondering what would happen if you put a half cross to a three quarter cross? would it be a level litter? I know that the best way to get 3/8 -5/8 is to breed a 3/4 collie x 1/4 greyhound to a full grehound but was wondering about the half cross to the three quarter cross. Also, what about puting a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie to another 3/4 grey 1/4 collie? would that give you a

Had a day out fishing from the banks on Loch Lomond today. Managed to get one at 6lbs. I was fairly chuffed with it!

Well done mate, I'm hoping to get a hare or two with my dog this season. She's three years old and has only seen rabbits so far, but hopefully that will change. There's not many hares about my area so it looks like I will need to do a bit of travelling. A guy I met through my work has some land in Lanarkshire that apparently has loads of them. He shoots them, but will let me try the dog on them. Hows your dog bred?

Hi All, I am 24 and live in the borders of Scotland. I have 2 dogs at present, one lurcher and one terrier. I mainly hunt rabbit and rat and do a bit of fishing. My dogs are nothing special but they are pets that work, not out and out working dogs. I hunt purely for sport and providing I get a good run with them, then i'm happy. Regards Minion

Hi Tarmac, I always thought that you can train any dog if you put the effort in. I was gullable enough to believe that Saluki's were untrainable. I think that the people that I talked to were unable to train there dogs. There is a differance between an untrainable dog and not being able to train it.
-
After reading some of the recent books on lurchers I see that alot of the top dogs are saluki crosses. There are none in my area(that I know of) but I was always of the opinion that they were untrainable ( Because of what I had been told and read in older books) I know J Darcy has very well trained saluki crosses as he tells us about them in his books, but was wondering if other people are able to train them to a high standard. I know J Darcy has trained his well, but wondered if others have the same success. I suppose what I want to know is what would you expect from a saluki cross? ca

This is Jade, she is 21/2 years old and I took her ratting for the first time on Thu 23rd December. I relise it's old to start her ratting, but it's the first time i've had somewhere decent to go. I use her as a genral bushing dog and take her rabbiting. She's only worked rabbits and now rat. I got invited to go to a poultry shed while they were muking it out. The had lifted all the floors and were using a forklift fitted with a bucket to scoop out all the chicken crap. As they lifted the crap, rats were bolting and Jade got stuck in. She got a few bites at first as it's the first qu

Ian, I'm sure I'd get found out if I tried to lie. At the end of the day, people are only liying to themselves. I've nothing to proove to anyone so I might as well be honest. Tess is now at the age that I am comferatble to work her harder. I was worried about her getting blown or damaged if I worked her to hard to soon. She is my first lucher and I don't want to ruin her. I am 24 and whilest I've been involved with ferrets and dogs for 12 years, she's the fist lurcher pup I've had. I had a lurher when I was 17 that was given to me by a freind. She was 4 years old and fairly well

Thanks for all the replys. It would be easy for me to over exagurate and try to put her accross as a superb dog, but she's not. She looks good, but she's no wonder dog. To be honest, I haven't worked her as much as I could have. She is 21/2 now and has had 18 rabbits. She is a pet that i work, not an out and out working dog. I hope to work her alot more this year. I would like to try her on hare but there aren't to many around my area(well I can't find them) She is fairly well trained and comes back when I call her. (usually) I enjoy mooching around with her and that's all that matters. H

Hey Merle, I finally figurd out how to post pictures, so as promised - a picture of Tess. 3/4 greyhound 1/4 border collie.

Just wondered how many dogs people keep at one time. I only have two. One lurcher and one terrier. They are both young so i'm not really considering another dog for a while(well perhaps one for coursing, but my wife has other ideas) but one of my worries would be ending up with two many dogs to work and train properly. I understand that as a dog gets older the natural thing is to bring in a n apprentice to take over when the older dog retires, but I saw a guy walking four lurchers at a show a few years back and remember wondering how he has the time to give them all sufficent work. It's easy

Any advice on the best tactics for pike this time of year. I've only been out after them once before and used 3rods set up on the buzzer bars I use for carp. I fished two on the botton and one with a float. I only caugh one pike and that was on the float. I was using roach as the dead bait. Just wondered what the best approach would be?

My presemt rifle is a Hw97k. The only problen I have with it is the weight? I could do with something a bit lighter. My mate's got a BSA super 10. Its quiet, acurate and you don't need to fiddle about trying to load pellets in the dark, just pull pack the bolt. I fancy the s410, but I don't do enough shooting to justify spending that sort of money on a air gun. Mabee one day, but the hw97 will do just now.

Went out ferreting yesterday with my wee cousin. We were getting ready to go when my wife decided that she wanted to come. So, the three of us jumped into the car, our lurcher Tess was in the back and Jade, our terrier was on my wifes knee. I usualy only take one dog at a time, unless i'm out for a mooch, but if we left Jade on her own she'd have barked from the moment we left tuntill we got home. We got to the first set, And entered the ferrets. I had Tess by my side and we waited. About fifteen minutes passed when tesses ears popped up. She heard the thumping below ground. A rabbit bolted
