Cheers bud. Did you particapate?

What were the rules for coursing with whippets? ie length of slip and how was the winner decided? Was it a points system.

To be fair to judges, how are the ment to judge fairly at a lurcher show? There is no breed standard to use as a referance too. If they were judging say german shepards, there would be a specific breed standard to jusdge against but how can you judge a lurcher? It's not a job I would thank you for and too be honest I don't go to many shows.

Monday - friday 8.30 - 5.30 suits me fine. Don't work any weekends. Am fortunate enough that the money is reasonable. I'm certianly not loaded but am comfertable and not greedy enough to try and take the overtime from the lads that really need it. Sounds like you love your job though bud. There's much more to life than money!!!!! What do you actually do for a living that allows you to hunt so much?

I was wondering if you can have an "all round" whippet. By that I mean can a top notch racing dog still be a top rabbitting / coursing dog? I wasn't sure if a whippet would still show the same enthusiasum for racing / lure coursing if it is allowed to chase live quarry. My whippet will be a working dog and rabbit and hare will be my quarry but i fancy a wee go at lure coursing and racing too. So does anyone have experiance of dogs that do both to a reasonable standard?

lets have the truth how long have you been into runing dogs
minion replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Started off with an air gun at 11. Then came a few ferrets the same year and while I wanted a lurcher my parents wouldn't let me get one. We ended up with a pet mongral who was 1/2 border collie 1/4 lab and 1/4 complete heinz 57! I started taking her ferreting with me and she turned into a fantastic ferreting dog. Not fast enough to catch a rabbit on the run, but marked as good as any dog i have seen and pined the netted rabbits. At 17 my parents finally let me get a lurcher. I had her for a few months when she got hit by a car and had to be PTS. Was given a Lucus terrier at 18 a -
The fact is the dog will get bitten by a rat at some stage and if the dog is not matured mentally then it will set it back in it's training. So i wouldn't rush it. The dog may look ready at 6 months but I would wait until 8 or 10 to be safe. Why risk spoiling the dog by premature entry? Whats a couple of months?

Collected my pup last Sunday and am over the moon with her. Full credit to stallion for her condition. To be honest, I was made to feel very welcome and I think that the fact that stallions young kids had been playing with the pups is a credit to him. I bought a pup from a genuine bloke who knows how to treat his dogs and would recomend him to anyone. Thanks again. The pup is fantastic.

Hi, Sorry about the delay in replying. I am in Midlothian, near Edinburgh. I wouldn't charge for postage as I can send it through my work and I wont get charged for it. Not sure how mutch it's worth. To be honest I'm not "up" on airguns. I bought it and never use it so I'd mutch rather someone got the use of it. I will put a picture up when I can.

I have decided to sell my Air rifle. It is a couple of years old and has fired less than 500 pellets. I have just sent it to be checked and overhauled to the "Airgun Centre" as they do it free as part of the deal when I bought the gun so who ever buys it can be assured it will be at full power and good condition. The details are as follows - It's a HW97K .22 cal complete with Tasco 3-9 x 40 Scope Airgun Centre Linned and padded case Hunting sling. Any offers? Gun can be sent anywhere in the UK overnioght by Parcelforce.

I have only had two terriers in my lifetime so am certianly no expert. But, both turned out fairly good bushing dogs. I started them both in this wat and it worked for me. First I took them to a burrow that nearly always holds a few bunnies in it. It is in the centre of a field and I use a ferret to bolt the rabbits. They head for the bushes and other holes around the field and the dog gives chase. It wont catch, but it now knows what a bunnie is and it chases it in to the bushes etc. This also helped me develop their marking abilities as ferreting dogs and all round "above ground" do

An intresting subject. I always have and always will get my dogs booster each year. Is it worth the risk to save forty odd quid? For me NO, defenatly not. Plus, if you need to put them in the kennels to go on holiday or something you need the certificate to get them in. (well, at my kennels you do)

Does your partner get envolved with your hobby???
minion replied to Berkutchi's topic in General Talk
My wife has been out a few times and loves to see the lurcher run. She doesn't particuarly like seeing the animals getting caught though. She doesn't have a problem with me going out and she helps clean out the ferrets. She also did most of the basic obediance training for my lurcher and did a really good job. I am very lucky to have her. I couldn't find a better match. -
Same thing happened to me 9 years ago bud. I was devistated!! I know how you feel but it gets easier. I had to get one of my ferrets PTS today and I know it's not the same, but I still feel absolute crap. She had a tumer on her neck though so it was the right thing to do. Chin up bud.

Thanks for putting the pictures up. I am really happy with mine Having said that, they both look like absolute crackers though. I really can't wait to get her home. Now I need to think of a name for her, well to be fair, I think my wife will pick it!
