  1. Wow - impresive drawings!! I would love to be able to draw like that - a real talent
  2. I would defenatly go down the route of a pup. That way you know where you stand. I have alot of respect for those who rehome rescue dogs but imo you should avoid them as you are taking on someone elses failure. Ideally rescue dogs should end up in good pet homes for the rest of their lives. Yes some get a rescue dog that ends up being a good one but why take the risk? Plus training a pup is great fun and I wouldn't want to miss out on that part.
  3. If its a sensible debate, their is no problem. But, when it starts getting personall and childdish tit for tat, it will be closed. I see where you are comming from Frank and to be honest I loose intrest when theads become silly arguments but unless they are being aggresive or abusive then I think its wrong to lock them. Its supposed to be a forum where you can express your views. It's strange that you can show a "retrieved" hare with picture of an air rifle beside it but not allow people to express their personal views no matter how petty they are. Don't get me wrong, I lov
  4. I agree. I cant understand why the hares thread is locked and why the ultimate rabbiting dog thread has been locked. Can anyome shed any light as to why they have been locked?
  5. How come the "hares" thread on the running dog section has been locked? I have read it a few times and cant see what the problem is and why it has been locked? Just curious.
  6. I went to a car bootsale on the weekend and bought a teddy for £10. I then sold it for £20 but am now being chased buy musilems who are upset that I have made a proffit out of a teddy!

    YOUR OTHER HALF

My wife doesn't come out alot but will do occasionally. She doesn't like seeing the animals being killed but thats understandable. The actual kill does nothing for me. She loves to see the dogs run - which is what its all about. She plays with the ferrets and helps clean them out and handles them. She does not have a problem with me hunting but does not like having guns in the house. I got rid of my air rifle when we had kids. I know that its not the gun thats dangerous but she was worried so i made the sacrafice. I can get another one when the kids grow up and to be honest i never use
  8. Had a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie and she was a very good dog. Easy to train (alot easier than my current whippet ), good on rabbits, fast enough for hare and i would defenatly have another.
  9. Thanks for the encouragement. The reason we are opting for part time to start with is security. I have two young childen, a wife and a deranged whippet to look after and am reasonably well paid £24000 per year mon - fri 8-5 no hastles. I have no formal qualifications and have been quite lucky getting reasonable money. Sure id rather have 50000 a year but its better than 12000!! My future partner is a very good hands on guy but he couldn't run an office. Some people just cant get a grip of how importiant invoicing etc is and he would really strugle on his own. We both have our own str
  10. Cheers, We are going to keep our full time jobs at present until we get of the ground and make a name for ourselves. Basiclly we will be doing homers but keeping it above board. We hope to make it in to a full time business but even if we make a bit extra to pay for holidays etc. My mate is a gas engineer and domestic and comercial Corgi reg. He will be doing the fitting ect and I will be quoting jobs, invoicing etc plus genral labouring until we get off the ground and can get an apprentice. We are going to go Heating, bathrooms and kitchens plus I am a pump engineer/ pump salesman
  11. My friend and I have been toying with the idea of starting up working for oureslves. We are thinking of a partnership but were wondering how to go about it. We are going to be based in Scotland so it will be by Scottish law. What do we need to do with Inland revenue etc and company name reg etc cheers
  12. It really is quite sad Frank. It has been in the news up here in Edinburgh and the Lothians that bogus callers are posing as CID officers to gain access to old peoples homes and robbing them (which is pathetic) yet should they be caught they will get a lesser punnishment than if they were caught with 3 hares. The law is a complete and utter joke!!!!
  13. The main thing is if you can get a club started you can build on it, just start off with a bit of fun not caring who wins. i've been running lure coursing in Lancashire now for 7 years for whippets and most of the time the owners take it in turns to judge a meeting in a relaxed atmosphere its only the fact that this ones got prize money ect that we decided to bring in independent slipper/judge. if you go along to 1` of the scotish racing clubs they will make you welcome. Calidonian Thistle which rtace near the Kincarden power station just next to the Kincarden bridge and there the
  14. Is your pup a peddy or non ped? How old is it? I would try it with a rabbit dummy on a rope and drag it for it untill it chases. If you cant get a rabbit skin I used a tea towel on a rope and my whippet loves chasing and ragging it. You might find that if the rabbit is sitting still your dog ignores it but when it runs i would think it will chase. You could try bolting rabbits with the ferrets. As long as the dog can see it bolt it will hopefully give chase. I was thinking of starting up a lure coursing club if there was enough intrest. There are two racing clubs. Alloa and
  15. Cheers bud, maybee next year. I wouldn't risk damaging her. Its not worth it is it. She will just need to win it next year ha ha. Are there any lure coursing clubs in Scotland? or how far north is the closest that you know of?
  16. How old should a dog be before it could enter? My pup will be 10 months then. Is she still to young? She's never lure coursed before but it would be nice just to meet other whippet people and see the other whippets coursing.
  17. Thanks for your comments minion when the dogs are in top shaped they are pretty fast big dog could run forever wee dog lighting fast but would burn out quicker than the big dog they have'nt seen much hare but i say they could do the deed there'd be no 70 yard faw law mind you, both dogs are very smart and good at reading there quarry, hopefully they get a few run's on the long ears this season will let you know how they fair out its hard to beat a bit of collie in a lurcher, hows your whippet fairing out for you?? Hi bud, she is only 9 months so i havent really had her out.
  18. Hi bud, I really like the look of these dogs. How are they(were they) on hare? are they fast enough? I had a 3/4grey 1/4 collie and she was really fast. I now have a ped whippet that i love but do miss the collie brain.
  19. I fully apprciate what you both say and don't disagree with either off you. Horses being a prime example. My current whippet came from working stock. But if you had someone who bread two lurchers. Both male and from working parents but one pup went to a pet home and never saw a rabbit. The other went to a working home and caught hundreds of rabits, hare fox and dear. It would make sense to breed from the worker, no one could argue that? But, what about the pet(litter brother) it would be a non worker but have a similer genetic make up to its brother - would you breed from it or not?
  20. This is always an intresting thread the old Hancock debate. I had a Hancock dog and was happy with her. Not a world beater but i had some great sport with her and thats what matters to me. Every one is entitled to their own opinion and I have mine. I understand the thinking behind breading worker to worker and I dont agree with puppy farming. However, I asked a similar question before and recieved no replys. - Can someone give me a scientific reason why breeding worker to worker has more chance of producing workers than by breeding a couple of pet lurchers, or pet to worker?
  21. Spot on bud!! Its about seeing the dogs work. Sure we all want to have the best dogs but like you say they cant all be world beaters. It's about being out there. When I go fishing I dont always catch fish yet I still go back because I love being on the riverbank or by the side of the sea. If your dog gives 100 [ercent but the rabbit / hare gets away so what. Its about being there IMO.
  22. Iv herd that branded around the forum quite a bit just lately. What is everyones problem with having a bad dog pts? In my opinion a lurcher is bred to work and brought to work if it doesn't do what i want then i cant afford the kennel space. It might sound unfair but i know that no matter what iv tryed if it still doesn't serve a purpose then i know i wont have the time for it so it wont get any work. And to me i think that it isn't fair for a lurcher to sit in a kennel and get the odd road walk. So the best thing is to put it to sleep. I'm very against passing shite on, if i don't want it the
  23. Would pay as much as it costs to get the dog I want. Paid £250 for my current whippet but would have paid £500 if that was the price. She is KC reg from working stock and I think Itallion Stallion sold himself short selling them for £250. Shows he's not in it for the money though and says alot for him. As for selling - Would not sell any of my dogs. When I buy a dog it has a home for live. Perhaps it doesn't make me a "genuine" dog man as I would keep a dog that was not upto the grade?
  24. Mine is in a kennel during the day out the back of my work and in the house at night. She is a whippet and has no problems being out the back.
