  1. taking it out stock breaking and getting it used to scents in my eyes is a must. being new to the terrier game i am just wondering what can wisen the pup up.things like ragging a tail or carcass and watching digs. i was told get them to rats when there adult teeth are in then others say rats and rabbits ruin fox dogs. whats your opinions?
  2. Nice looking dog mate what age is he? How many do you work?
  3. Thanks guys, that's the kind if thing I'm talking about ie ragging the tail and stuff. The clay pidgin club is a good idea to as I will use him for beating aswell
  4. Has anyone got any tips for bringing a pup on from an early age? I know you should let a pup b a pup but what can I include in there play to help bring there instinct out and give them better chance to hone there skills for when the time comes to enter.
  5. Is there any books out there solely about working border terriers, there seems to be ones for jrt bedlingtons, fells, lakelands etc?
  6. the pups coming on a treat!

  7. does anyone know if the working border terrier club is still up and running? i think it was started by jonny bluck. i could be wrong tho
  8. Ok fair point, the argument was whats harder to catch. I was saying to catch a fox properly I would say that a neck or shoulder bit takes more skill and technique than catching a rabbit anywhere although the rabbits are faster
  9. So no discussing anything relevant to the topic then or that makes you a fanny??
  10. I'm talking about ones that grab by the shoulders or neck not ones that grab the back end and shake from there. What I'm saying mate is in my opinion I like a dog to grab it's fox top end and take the least amount of punishment, that's what takes more skill n technique. Hey they not all do it and if your happy with the way your dog does it good for you.
  11. So a good fox dog grabs anywhere and gets bit to fcuk?? Not my idea if a good fox dog then!
  12. But I would say fox is harder to catch and dispatch
  13. Some rabbits that have been lamped lots are like mini rockets, seen some take off at amazing speeds. The dog needs quicker reactions at a faster speed and to strike anywhere will do whereas on foxes the dog slows down a good bit to time his strike and it has to b placed precicely orvits a sore face for him.Different techniques are needed for both. But both as exciting as the other
  14. I thought there would b alot more said about them, I wonder what percentage of the terriermen use them compared to other breeds and what makes the other breeds better then?
  15. I have a couple but due to work commitments they haven't been getting as much graft as I'd like. Dug a few foxes out with them. One is untried as of yet and the other is a bayer but due to only having been down at half a dozen or so it is hard to really say what she is like. Iv heard some stories that they are a very hardy breed and sometimes to hard.
  16. Surely there are some people on here that have worked them?
  17. What is trying to be said is there is no sport in the shooters who drive around shooting vast numbers of foxes in a season without leaving the comfort of the veichle. Noone can say shooters in general aren't hunters. The person who knows more than any fieldsports enthusiast about fieldcraft and hunting skills in my opinion would be the deer stalker! I take my hat of to the decoyer who spends the time working out flight paths, setting out the perfect formation and perfecting his hide. The rough shooter being ever alert who works along side his spaniel or other breed to flush game to him that he
  18. Thanks mate, glad I joined the site now some good topics, tips, opinions and advice so far
  19. Are there many of you's on here that have had much digging experience with border terriers. are they classed as a baying breed or the hardened kind that go in an aren't afraid to mix it up. Just would like to know what there general working abilities are like from the guys who work them or have worked them in the past. No talk about show dogs allowed just workers!
