anyone shoot a 270 winchester
David B Allen replied to jamie g's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Round placement is just as important as the round itself when shooting any life game. I've never used a .270 myself but I've used a .308 with Winchester Super X 155 Gr for Highland red deer, roe and fox for over 25 years now, works for me. -
I'm covered by Grampian police Scotland. The same rule applies to your first FAC, a renewal or any variation; you must prove "Good Reason" for having these firearms and the ammo you've asked for. In my area I'd be hard pushed to get a .22 Lr and a .17 Hmr on a first FAC because of how much they are alike.

Laser Range Finders
David B Allen replied to David B Allen's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I like the idea of the ballistics calculator on the IPhone; ITunes Apps here I come. -
I'm covered by Grampian police Scotland The Home Office set the guide lines and different police forces tend to make up there own rules based on the Home Office guide lines. Shotgun cartridges are to be stored out of plain sight but do not have to be in a gun safe; I have mine in the top of a warm cupboard so there is no chance of them getting damp. Section One ammo is cover by the same guide lines as a Section One firearms; locked cabinet or gunsafe secure to the fabric of the building and seperate from your firearms. My tip for the day . . . . for the last three gun safe I ha

If you're going to use a Sound Mod. you'll have to use Sub-sonic ammo for it to be of any use; I've been using .22 LR Rimfire Winchester Super X for twenty five years and it does just what it says on the tin. My first .22 Ruger was a bolt action, I found I wasn't fast enough for what I wanted to do; the Ruger has a 10 round box clip that fits flush but you can use a 30 round "Banana" clip for that added fun.

I've been using Ruger Semi-auto .22 LR Rimfire with Parker Hale Sound Mod. & .22 Winchester Super X Ammo for over twenty five years now and they have let me down; I'm on my third one now. If you'll be shooting from a 4x4 Etc. I'd choose the short barrel with the sound mod. Polycarbonate stock and stainless steel are very hard wearing You'll have loads of shooters going for the 17 HMR that's been around since approx 2002, there are pro's and con's for both, one of the main being cost; a normal .22 LR Rimfire cost less to buy and feed with ammo than the 17 HMR and when I go throu

I've seen a few articles where shooter have give very accurate shot ranges so I'll hazard a guess there are a few shooter here that use Laser Range Finders. What do you use ? How accurate do you find them ? I know there will be a few shooter who think it's removing an element of shooting using a Laser Range Finder; some of us need all the help we can get.

I'm covered by Grampian Police Scotland Our firearms department will not grant a Section One shotgun cert. for clay shooting, game shooting "Formal shoots allow two cartridges in a shotgun at one time" You'll only get a Section One shotgun cert. if you're a keeper Etc. I've had to have all three of my Section One shotguns converted and added to my Shotgun Cert. Best of luck with that one, I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

Looking for a semi auto
David B Allen replied to rhoderick1888's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
how much we talking I'd not be asking alot for the semi-auto Franchi; approx £180-00 and of course you get to try before you buy to see it's what you're looking for. Full choke as standard and three shot convertion cert Etc. I don't think it's been fired in a year; I use the other one more as I've had a recoil pad fitted and opened the choke a bit. Private message me if you're interested and want to know more and I'm sure you'll get loads of advise on here, that's what it's for. -

Looking for a semi auto
David B Allen replied to rhoderick1888's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It might just be a mis-print as they are normally a five shot; it's also an easy job to get the mag crimped. I might even need the room in my gun safe in a week or so and the first thing to go will be one of my semi-auto Franchi's; full choke and I think 30" if I remember right. -

Looking for a semi auto
David B Allen replied to rhoderick1888's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As I've said I have two Franchi's, they are bacis semi-auto's no fancy stock or metal work but very hard wearing semi-auto shotguns, chrome valadium barrel as I found out when I wanted one to have it fixed choke changed; easy to strip down and spray out with WD40 after a wet day out. I tend to use 32gr or 36gr cart through it, as James K says he's not had a problem with 28gr. I agree with James K about the safety issue, safety flag Etc. I've found that other persons like to see a broken safe shotgun because that's what they're used to. It's worth shopping around different areas and -
I think the simple answer to this one is, get the best you can afford and you're comfortable with. I've had the same Lee Enfield .308 for over twenty five years and it was a .303 before then. Try and keep to the same ammo once you find you're happy with; I've used Winchester Super-X in .308 .22 & .22-250 for over twenty five years now, it works for me. Good scope mounts are more important as the scope; and you can run into £1000's for a great scope. That should be all your pocket money spent.

Looking for a semi auto
David B Allen replied to rhoderick1888's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The thing with a cheap semi-auto, the more moving parts the more scope for problems. If you're fixed on a semi-auto you'd be able to pick one up at your local gun dealer for a good price that's been checked over Etc. Semi-auto shotguns are not very popular on shoots or in shooting company because you can't see at a glance if they're clear and safe. Also you'll find that light loads can struggle with reloading a semi-auto's After saying all that I use two semi-auto Franchie's with different chokes for vermin control but never on a shoot because of the safety issue. -
All the information for a variation is taken from your current cert. IE land and storage Etc. Remember there is a fee of approx £26-00 if you're adding to your cert. but it's free if you're removing something from your cert. at the same time. My local firearms officer came out to see I had enough space in my gun safe for my variations.

Anything I'd use for geese I'd also use for fox; nine ball "Buck Shot" also does a fine job.

Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
David B Allen replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'm covered by Grampian Police Scotland; I was stopped by a traffic unit last winter as it turned out because they couldn't see my tax disk; I was carrying a 12g .308 .22 .22-250 on a gun rack and a steel box of ammo in my Land Rover, they didn't even ask for ID Etc. saying "You'd have not stopped for us if they were illegal" It very much depends on the Police and area you live in. -
Silent 223 moderator
David B Allen replied to wanderinstar's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Different moderators will also change the tone of the sound and that might be more comfortable to use and of course the more money you throw at a moderator the better the product. You'll never get past the subsonic and supersonic differences. -
firearms certificate
David B Allen replied to rhoderick1888's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'm covered by Grampian Police and was advised to 500 to buy and 700 to hold. It's also handy that .22 Lr Rimfire come in handy cases of 500. Our local firearms department also check what you've bought over the pass years. With the like of .308 being over a £1-30 a round and .22-250 at £1-00 a round you'd not have more than a 200 at one time. -
best centerfire for foxes
David B Allen replied to fox head's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I've used 22-250 for some time now, 55g, 3600 FPS, 2cm group at 200m and just about flat out to 300 meters. It works for me and does what it says on the tin.
