Why Are The Old Breeds Of Gundogs Still Not Used?
amentalcat replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
I was told by an elderly chap years ago, that it was because the older breeds take longer to mature, and that was echoed by some of the people that I have spoken to that have breeds like Curlys, Goldens, and even Flatcoats. I suppose that some people don't have the time/money/knowledge to take on a puppy that might still be immature at 2-3 years old, they want a dog that they can bring on quickly. Its a sad situation, maybe a sign of the times very sad, but there are still pockets of people about that use the older breeds if you look for them. Ali -
Most of the Americans i've spoken to either use the Boykin or the American Water Spaniel, i've never heard of an American Water gun dog. I thought poodles originally came from Germany (puddel hund) and then France, where they standardised the type and became very popular as water retrievers. Anyway, i say go for it, theres no reason why your Cockerpoo couldn't make a smart, useful little worker. Best of luck. Alison

They are a lovely breed that i'm sure will get more and more popular, very quiet and soft in the house, but great in the field as well. I am not too fond of Weims either, but i think these are a lot more like a toned-down GWP, they have the working abilty, but just slightly smaller and slightly less nutty!. I believe they mature a wee bit faster as well. All the owners i have met are totally smitten with them. If i was looking for a HPR, this is the breed i would have. Ali

Free Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer
amentalcat replied to stoaty1's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
Must be tough for his owners - good for them that they are putting his needs first though and have contacted you, rather than just getting rid. Cracking dog for the right person though, best of luck with the rehoming, i'm dead jealous. Ali -
For Sale Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer dog pups
amentalcat replied to stoaty1's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
I wish i was in the market for a new dog - i'd have your hand off for one! For the undecided, they are cracking dogs, great hunters outside, but with a good 'off' switch for in the house. I wish you all the best for your pups - they look super Ali -
I'm guessing your missus means a Cavalier King Charles rather than a King Charles Spaniel (KC - difficult to get hold of!). If you are not able to put her off getting one, i would make sure you get one from a good breeder, who health test their dogs. Yes you will pay a bit more, but CKC's can have a lot of health problems, and nasty ones at that . Better to pay a wee bit more than loads more at the vets later on. Best of luck - you never know, it could be a working monster when you get it! (although possibly not) Ali

Anyone with some suggestions please
amentalcat replied to saxonmaster's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Saxon, Just wanted to say so sorry about your lovely bitch. I know you must feel like crap at the moment, but you went above and beyond for her and tried everything you could. I know its no comfort, but she was a grand looking bitch and you should be very proud of her, she was exactly what a Rottie should be. Chin up mate. Ali -

amentalcat replied to welsh beagle's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
What an interesting mix - are they all smooth coated? I should think they'll make good little dogs, pretty single minded, but smart! Best of luck with them, i wish i was in the market for a new dog! Ali -
For Sale Kc reg English bull terrier
amentalcat replied to Storm da bull's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
I'm all for giving a dog with 'issues' a 2nd chance, but i suppose it depends on whether you could guarantee that the dog was NEVER around kids again. Its a lot to ask if you don't know the person you are letting the dog go to, i personally wouldn't want the responsibility. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Alison -
For Sale Kc reg English bull terrier
amentalcat replied to Storm da bull's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
I was always led to believe that English Bull Terriers are (on the whole) fantastic with people, it is other dogs that they can sometimes be gobby with. Sorry, but if the dog has had a go at a kid, then in my book its a no brainer - take it to the vets to be PTS, better that than hearing about it biting a child later on, or having to live in a cage for the rest of its life. amentalcat replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Any bitch with Maesydderwen, Wernffryd or (my personal favourite!) Nancarrow in her lines should be a good'un. Good luck in your search Ali
