Maybe so but without good breeding behind the dogs in the 1st place you wound not have the good dogs to talk about.Any man can put a dog across a bitch and produce a worker or 2 but to do it consistently each time you breed and to keep the same line of dogs goin takes a bit of know how would you not agree. yes but i would say the working terrier wasnt a product of known 'terriermen' and their lines. but unknown lads who bred worker to worker. well bred bitch to well bred dog gives a high chance of good offspring, even if they are different lines. and i would say a higher percentage of dogs c

I would disagree, a good terrier man would not have to wait 4-5 seasons to decide whether a dog or bitch is worth breeding from.

i think your correct in your reply, its just you, i am still digging dogs that are ten years plus and fit as fiddles. and have done so till i taught it was correct to retire them, lots on here have seen them been dug.

marshman your father talks a lot of sense, and over the years I have done just what your father has done,i bred off the average because they came from top class lines / workers, and there sire / dam were no longer around, I have come across a nugget pairing a few times and back then I had not got the room to repeat those mating's as I bred for my own use, I been to game fowl shows, and any thing that concerns gameness in an animal I have mixed with people from all over the world at these shows, and most have said they done just like what your father has or had done, ( like myself) if you do

why don't you answer your last two sentences of your post, instead of sitting on the fence. You'll have to explain your question Dealer ? It's very rarely I sit on the fence on any subject or opinion. Like I usually say, people who stand in the middle of the road usually get knocked down. My post is fairly clear. in life and in dogs everyone has different standards. choosing your stud dog is the most important decision you will have to make if you want to breed working terriers, and is of great significance to the future of your yard. The first thing you should go for in a stud dog is for a stud dog that has produced good off spring and if possible seen them dug .In your situation you need to find out has your stud dog produced any off springs that are been dug. I myself know of dogs that quit but were good producers.i know of guys that used studs dogs that later quit, and guys went home and put to sl

digging been good this season, dug a few young dogs, been out most days with the dogs, think were near 63 - 65 digs so far.
