Culling is a hard thing to do, but say you could get your numbers down without going through the grit and grief of it, in the long run I really think it is the right thing to do and it should be done a lot more often. I do understand where the person was coming from when they said it maybe best wasn't brought up. But maybe it should be brought up so more people consider it. Then maybe there wouldn't be the need for so many dogs to be going into pounds and foster care (don't even know if yous have that over there). Plus it's a whole lot better for the bitch having less pups because it

No it wasn't. I had a litter and only two people were interested in the pups, she had a litter of 11 and was going to struggle so I culled all bar 1 bitch and 1 dog. I didn't want pups going to owners that would treat them like shit, kick them when their down, and i didn't want any pups going to pounds. I've kept track of these pups very easily and one person could no longer keep one so i got it back and gave it to a mate that had just lost a dog. In my opinion, those people that cull are the ones that are helping our "sport"

I've brought up a few pups without doubling them up, the reason I double them up when bringing them into the game is so they come on quicker and so they're less frustrating. When you bring a pup up (depending on the dog) it can take a while for them to figure it out and then there's others that just pick it up straight away.

I've been reading about people saying just buy a pup and not add anything to an already saturated market. Let's say you're breeding a litter for yourself and 3 of your mates, yet your bitch had a litter of 10 or so pups. Would you consider culling the litter down so there's only 4 of them for you and your mates? I'm keen to hear everyones opinions.

I've got a Borzoi Irish wolfhound Greyhound (1/4 borzoi) by far the best dog I've ever owned. an absolute freak, her drive is through the roof, have been out a few times ferreting when she has not missed a thing. Has got heaps of hares under her belt, heaps of foxes, cats and loads of bigger stuff, even got one dingo! I have never seen a dog with so much drive for a young age, with the speed to burn, never giving up and is capable of running all night on a lot of game without sitting down. She's 28 inches and 28kg. only downside is she knocks her stopper pads around heaps being such a big do

myxomatosis is confined to rabbits.

My best bitch would jump them like nothing, she was coming back after having a litter of pups and i took her out to a mates, she got tangled in an electric fence when she was jumping it and it set her back a little bit, but then i took her out again and the same fcking thing happened and she lost so much confidence with electric fences. now she goes under them. Nothing worse for wrecking a dog.

I use ridgeback crosses for this job. -
My borzoi cross takes them night in night out, seems to get harder on each one too. But borzois were bred for centuries to hunt wolves, my ibizan cross would back off if run too much on them same with the grey. Also had a ridgeback bull grey that was awesome on foxes and cats night in night out so i put him over my borzoi cross and have two pups out of them that are 7 months at the moment and are keen to rag dead foxes.

Well I hunt with a lamp 6 nights a week and go during the day on weekends and the runs are a lot shorter on the lamp.
-
you should not lamp hares they are not at there best on the lamp so yes 40 rabbits would be a lot harder to catch but i think youll find hares are faster imo don't want to start a fight, but isn't nothing at their best on the lamp? Don't we use the lamp to find game easier and so they catch them easier? I've had dogs that couldn't catch a hare in the light because they ran it differently and chased it out of the beam over banks etc. but caught them in the day relatively easily.

Just got given a staghound/whippet X whippet/ bull grey today, she's keen to get stuck into anything and it's a lot different hunting with one of them than it is to hunt with a bigger lurcher i can tell ya that! im used to dogs 28 inches + and having one 22 inches, it's a whole different ball game.

beautiful dogs & pics mate. well done -
Over here in Aus, we really just start taking our dogs out as soon as they can walk, and we get them jumping fences as soon as they are able to. I have two bitches i raised from pups and they turned out pretty good but when i see videos of the british lurchermans dog, they seem better in a way. Now one of my bitches is having pups and i was going to keep two of them, i was going to raise one how an australian would, and i was going to raise the other how the average british lurcherman would. So what ages should i start taking them out in the field? what ages should i start them jumping? what

Your dog looks like a black borzoi in the photograph furtherest to the right. Nice dogs anyway mate! love the look of them.

My dad always told me that coursing hares were illegal over here in aus, but hunting them with sighthounds certainly isn't. You can hunt rabbits, hares, foxes, pigs, goats, deer (in some places) with sighthounds. It's funny over here how they say you can't course stuff but you can hunt it for pest control.
