Incidently Dr B, on the subject of eating rabbit liver, I don't eat it personally. The rabbits on my permission frequently get tape worm. My local butcher tells me that it's currently a national problem. The first cists tend to be laid in the liver, charactorised by white spots or lines. Cooking the liver well should kill them, but will also leave you with liver like shoe leather! Eating a lightly cooked liver from an infected rabbit is the best way I can think of of getting tape worm. The species of tape worm in rabbit comfortably parasitizes humans also causing brain damage. If you i

I joint up the squirrel and drop it in a bowl with a beaten egg and some crushed garlic. I always keep the tag ends of loaves that don't get eaten and leave them in the bottom of the even to crisp up and dry out when I'm cooking other stuff. So I bash them up into bread crumbs in a plastic bag and throw in a handful of porridge oats and a little salt and pepper. Then I drop the eggy, garlicy squirrel into the bag and shake it all about until all the squirrel joints are coated. Shallow frying them on a medium heat in a big frying pan with a lid it seems to work best. They half fry, half ste

Perfect shot with the squirrel. I've eaten a lot of squirrel recently as a friend's wood was infested with them. It's a lot of faf as they're built like tanks. But it is a fantastic meat and I don't like to waste it. 'Kentucky fried squirrel' is one of my kid's favorite! (I know how treat them!) It seems that squirrel is the meat of the moment in London restaurants. As such, there's a lot of interest in it. My local butcher traded me a brace of squirrels for a kilogram of kangeroo steak last week. It has to be the most bizzare trade I've ever made!!!

Nice one Andy. Looking forwards to it. Always good to shoot somewhere new and as you know, rabbits never go to waste in our house! Take it easy. Paul

Thanks Simon. I plan to be there at 5:30 tomorrow morning. Dawn shooting is addictive! So no beer and an early night for me tonight (shock horror)! Give me a shout when you have a free weekend and I'll see if I can drag Andy out and get over to your gaff if that suits. It's been a while! Thanks Lewis. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a picture of the pigeons, but I will take a picture of my beloved HW90 and figure out how to post it. My HW is quite an unusual looking beasty. A friend who used to fit shot guns to customers noted that I have unusually long arms, that my elbows are too cl

I did a dawn shoot on Saturday. I’m struggling to fit shooting in with a busy family life. The solution: hunt while they sleep! I slip out of the house leaving my wife and children sleeping. Twenty minutes later I’m at my permission. Seventy acres of hilly grasslands broken with hedges and stands of trees, bounded on one side by a stream. Beautiful. The grass is laden with the first frost of the year, silver in the star light. Too soon, the day dawns red, fingers of sunlight seek out the ground. Where they touch, the frost immediately sublimes, steadily burning off into a thigh deep sea of

Just had the privilege of spending the weekend on Simon’s permission in South Yorks. For blokes that work too hard and constantly worry about the little things in life, like earning a living and looking after a family, two days out hunting, camping and drinking whisky was a small slice of heaven. It’s been 5 years since I last went camping without my kids, so understandably, I went a little mad. I only managed two hours sleep on the Saturday night. As I say, some time was spent drinking whiskey round the camp fire, and quite right too, but mostly I was out in the woods. I’m new at this

Hi Simon Nice piece of writing. Sounds like a really good evening. Andy told me that your beloved HW tried to bite you and consequently the barrel has suffered damage. I have a spare .22 HW90 barrel. Its not great cosmetically but perfectly serviceable. If it will fit you're welcome to it until you manage to get anything better. Andy's going to pick it up tomorrow night. Got to go. The kids want bedtime stories! Cheers Paul
