sidebyside replied to sidebyside's topic in Optics and Night Vision
Thanks for the replies, I will pass on details tomorrow, to Kieth, and yes the bitch does work. -
A good friend of mine has a Bedlington bitch that has just come into season and would like to get her lined, work strains only please. Preferably not to far from Gloucester.

Anyone know who does courses on alphachloralose? Why do you want a courses for alphachloralose? The AI will come under the general rodenticide heading.

Be very careful when setting snares that close to a fence, if you happen to catch a wrong 'un and someone see's it the smelly stuff will hit the fan. It has been known for the trapped what ever to jump the fence and hang itself. Non locking snare are use to allow non targeted species to be released unharmed. Otherwise well done you.

FAO ALL PEST CONTROLLERS
sidebyside replied to ferreterno1's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I have caught four fingers in a fenn trap in the past, the problem is they were my bloody fingers> -
I have what was a two seater sporting model that I took possession of 24 years ago, over the years it has turned into a four seater family estate with flared arches and various other sticky out bits, I suppose the next thing will be the gear box has to come out. If you want an old banger help yourself. We have been happily married for 7 years, we have been married for 23 years, the first 7 were OK!

It does work well but get the panicur with the blue label the purple labelled stuff is toxic to pheasants, it is not approved for gamebirds. The generally used worm is Flubenazole (Flubenvet) Oxfenbendazole is what is used for sheep and cattle it is the same stuff but a third of the price.

partridge question /
sidebyside replied to zap's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I've had 20 odd years working with gamebirds as a keeper, years of trial and error, not clipping will give the best returns, get your habitat right, make the birds want to stay in or very near the pen for at least a couple of weeks then dog them back. -

Don't clip wing which ever species you have, the flight is the main form of escape from predators. ( you already know that bit) Plenty of cover in the pens and plenty of sunshine coming birds will be happy, your pheasants need to have medium and high level roosting. Partridges (Red legs) will happily stay in and around a woodland if there is easy to find feed. your returns will be down i.e. 25% but you will have some spectacular shooting if the woodland is good. Our shoot has long narrow woods 100-200 mtrs wide, we have some very high banks that can produce birds that are out of range. Woodlan -

A few lamped foxes from the last two weeks
sidebyside replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Every fox in this area will have to have webbed feet. It is all lamping from vehicles here to cover the distant no chance of getting into the fields let alone getting out!!! -
I have had the bitch jab with the first two, I asked the vet if it was necessary to have the booster, of course he said it was, when I asked for it in writting he refused, when I asked him why he suggested that I found another vet as he would not allow dogs into his surgery that had not had annual boosters, so it's catch 22.

Hide the spade! Sometimes a dog will keep digging all it's life unless it is stopped early, if you are lucky enough to catch the dog in the act make one hell of a racket while running towards the dog (growling as loud as you can will work) grab the dog, drag it back to the hole, push its nose into the hole while shouting NO,NO,NO take the dog well away from the hole and make a fuss of it, go really over the top with the fuss, keep doing this until it gets the message.

Excluders for springer 6 trap.
sidebyside replied to Sprucegoose's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Point taken regarding cost of traps. It has been known that a cage trap plus the occupant has been put into a bin liner, some how the bin liner has ended up an exhaust pipe of a vehicle funny how the occupant has met it's maker within a few minutes when the bag is opened. I am not sure if this method of culling is legal though. -

Just in passing why are you going to use MK6's, cage traps will ensure only target species are culled. http://www.gct.org.uk/uploads/minkraftleaflet.pdf -
Contact Kirklley Hall College or Newton Rigg they normally will have a few keepers in your area on their books. Malcolm Fieldsend from the NGO maybe abke to help also.

I am from between Gloucester and Worcester, shooting;- I run a pheasant/duck syndicate, well into full bore, rim fire and air rifles, the odd bit of pigeon shoot and clay banging.

Some how a polecat manages to get rid of ticks, over the years I seen quite a few fitchers that have been lost and also plenty of polecats ( I wont say why the polecats have been seen) 99% of the true polecats have been free from ticks, the fitcher most times have been covered with the liitle shits. Before you ask how you tell the difference, take it from me you will know which one has seen a human before.
-
The Gamekeeper that was my mentor always skinned his foxes and burried them in very shallow graves, the next couple of nights he would sit down wind of the grave and inevitably would shoot at least one fox digging at the carcase.
-
As a rule of thumb, escapee fitcher cross ferrets will often have ticks very very rarely do ticks stay long on a true polecat.
-
I can't really see from the photo but it may well be urine burns, if they lie in urine by accident some dogs get a bad reaction even if it's their own.
-
Be aware that if you catch a polecat in a trap you may well be in breach of the law if you re set the traps in the same area.

I admit that I have only ever had the puppy jabs for my dogs, I just wanted to see what the general opinion was concerning the jabs, it looks to be 50/50 boost or not, I would be interested to know what the only puppy jabed dogs died of.

Bedlington/Whippet Pups For Sale
sidebyside replied to NIGHTSHADOW's topic in Optics and Night Vision
I have no degree in genetic no doubt nor does anyone else on here, I have seen a vertually all white genuine 1st cross Bedlington whippet, Then again I have seen quite a lot of 1st Crosses I wonder just how many have been seen by NIGHTSHADOW's critic's? If you buy a pup with a good stamp of white, at night you may just be able to see it in the gloom, that more often than not is a great asset. Good on ya NIGHTSHADOW for having something different. Don't forget pretty is as pretty does. I would rather have a splash of white on a dog that does the stuff than one I had to chase to get a rabbit o
