Which Rimfire Rifle Scope?
Effortless replied to MrUniverse's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Oh, don't be so arsey!! I have a Hawke 6x42 Mildot onn my CZ, and I'm perfectly happy with it!! And before you accuse me of loving substandard stuff, I used to work at a top London gunmakers in Mayfair, for 4 years, and have used lots of premium stuff, Zeiss, Leica etc etc, but I just don't see the need on a £300 rimfire. If I had a couple of grand floating about it would be different of course, but needs must. Effortless -
Hi, I have a Varmint 16", in .22LR. Scope is a Hawke 6x42 (£50), and I have a SAK moderator and Harris S bipod fitted. It also has the Brooke trigger kit fitted, which I highly recommend. The reason I chose the Varmint version is that I originally started out as a target shooter, and I like heavy rifles, wide chunky fore ends with heavy barrels. In terms of cosmetics, I am old-fashioned, and like blued metalwork and nice wood. I am happy to accept however, that for a lot of people who take their shooting far more seriously than me, the stainless rifles with synthetic stocks make

Hi, I'm inexperienced in rabbiting, but I'll give you my method anyway I'm too big, ungainly and mal-coordinated to stalk these pesky animals with any success, and I'm blind as a bat as well which doesn't help , so I tend to stick my arse in a hedge with the rifle pointed down the hedge line, on a bipod. They normally stick their heads up after about 6 minutes. The nettles can get painful in those 6 minutes though From what I hear lamping from a vehicle is most successful, but the farms I shoot over are generally too waterlogged for the farmer to let me take my beloved 50 year

Nice one!! Warthog and buffalo are my favourite african animals... plucky, courageous, and will have a go at you if you're stupid with them. Effortless

Hi, I started out as a prone target shooter, so I like heavy barrels, wide fore ends, and light triggers. Weight won't be an issue for you, as from what you say, you won't be lugging the thing around all the time. Additionally, the extra weight will damp down your body's natural wobble when you're shooting off hand, so in that sense will be more accurate for you. I use mine only in the field. I have a Varmint 16", SAK mod, Hawke 6x42, Harris bipod and sling, and I don't find it too heavy. In fact I'm thinking of putting a pound or so of lead in the butt to balance it a little bette

Hmmm.... all I can think of is the Express Rifle Association, an offshoot of the BASC, so if you're a member of BASC, you're also a member of the ERA. It doesn't just deal with doubles though, any action from about .350 and up. Mostly bolt actions, some single shots, and a few doubles. Best way to shoot lots of doubles is to work for Holland & Holland for a few years, like me!!! I got to know the regulators, and they got to know me, and that I could shoot. They don't really like shooting the big doubles when they're regulating them, as they recoil so much, and some rifles take a lo

I run a 1960 Landy SWB 2 1/4 petrol for my shooting wagon. Big 7.50x16's on it, so it'll go anywhere. Free tax, insurance £78 per year including my mate as a named driver. It's rebuilt on a galv chassis, has a Turner engine, and so should last ages. Only downside is 19mpg (err, could be 15... ouch!!) But as someone else pointed out, it has so much character, and I love it. I do have to say that a Fourtrak would make better sense though, especially if it was your only car. Effortless.

old holland and holland cartridges

98 Bruton Street was a LOOOOONG time ago. I would be a bit wary about using those cartirdges. Effortless -
Just to get this off my chest

Gobby little toe-rag. Hope you don't meet Ditch whilst he's out shooting -
Hi folks, this is my rig... A CZ Varmint 16" in 22LR, with a Harris S Series bipod, Hawke 6x42 mil-dot, SAK moderator. I'm very pleased with it, and the results that I get with it. However, I think it can be made better. The problem is that with all that weight up at the muzzle end, the rifle hangs very awkwardly when I have it on the sling. I wanted to add a pound or so of weight to the butt somehow, but don't know how the recoil pad is fixed, to be able to expose the wood, drill a hole, and add some lead shot 'n epoxy to balance it. Can anyone help? Or does anyone know of a

Hi everyone, I was out shooting this evening, and whilst I was waiting for the bunnies to pop their heads up, I got fidgety, and started fiddling with my phone. This is the result... A unusual photo, and it seemed to work out quite well. The bunny was 65 yards out, rig is a CZ 16" Varmint with a Hawke 6x42, Harris bipod, and Eley subs. The phone is a Nokia 6500 Classic (only 3.2 mp). The bunny died 5 sec after the photo, along with 4 others during the rest of the evening. Cheers, Effortless.

Best scope? Stick with a fixed magnification. Reason???? 1. Better light transmission... zoom scopes have many more individual lenses (elements in optic-speak), and since you lose a tiny percentage of light at every glass/air and glass/glass interface, the more elements you have, the worse the light transmission. 2. It is easier to guess range if you always use one magnification. For example, is the rabbit at 6x zoom the same distance as the one at 9x zoom? 3. Cheaper... fewer elements, no zoom ring, etc etc make for a scope that's cheaper to produce. I use a Hawke 6x42, w

Yup, pukka bit of kit. I have one on mine, and it makes such a difference!! Go for it, those who haven't already fitted one!!! Effortless

I have the rimfires covered for my rabbiting etc, and then a big jump to 308 and 303 (and thence on to 458 Lott, but that's another story). One of the farmers over whose land I shoot has OK'd me to shoot a couple of foxes for him, but I'm a bit wary of using 22LR for fox. I know that many on here have the confidence to shoot foxes with this calibre, but they're probably much better shots than me, and probably much better a stalking prey than me! I'd quite like a 223, but which one? I have always been someone who loves fine sporting guns (I worked at H&H for 4 years... the gun room

Sounds good... I'm looking for another moderator for my 22LR... my Parker Hale seems quite noisy when I take it out to our smallbore range. How much is the DM80?? Thanks, Effortless

Hi folks, any idea which are the highest velocity .22LR's around?? Quite fancy trying some (not for hunting... I imagine they would be far too loud) just to see what they're like. Thanks in advance, Effortless.

Big rifles?? I have a Brno ZKK-602 in .458 Lott... does that count?? I didn't need any extra security for it. Great fun to shoot though!! The rifle only weighs 8 pounds, and boy does it rock you when it goes off. I don't shoot it much (£6 a pop), but it surprises people who haven't been exposed to firearms. They never expect it to be so loud, or to recoil so much!! Effortless

Funny you should mention RFD's changing triggers!!! When I bought the rifle I was expecting a fully adjustable trigger, based on the specs given on the importers website... when I finally took it apart, it was the billy basic trigger. Not happy, but I couldn't be bothered to follow it up, or research it all correctly. Effortless.

Brooks kit is lovely.... My CZ Varmint in .22 LR was the only firearm I've ever bought new, and I was delighted with it in every way except the trigger. It was really heavy, had loads of creep, and even more backlash, and was generally horrible to use. And I know what good triggers should be like... I've been a NSRA target shooter for 25 years, and shoot an Anschutz 1913 for my target shooting. So I bought the Brooks kit, I used the lightest spring and the thickest tube, and now it's lovely! Hope it helps!!! Effortless
