  1. See what I mean ??? surprised you`ve not suggested a specialist food from a vets,, self rightious ???? just a wee bit eh?? What specialist food are you talking about? Might try to get hold of some of it....
  2. Hmm, All very well but I would advice using some common sense and a bit of research before seeing a vet,, 9 times out of 10 a vet is not required. Are you a vet per chance ??. And for the record ,I`ve never had to worm a ferret in 23 years,, fed on fresh rabbit and a large variety off road kill. TBH your post is nicely worded etc,, but is probably a bit to much scaremongering if you are new to ferrets,, already this has folk scared to feed fresh rabbit to a ferret,,,!!! stop being so dramatic with all your techno posts,,they are starting to sound a bit wikki. People need to chilla
  3. It really depends on your ferrets diet as to whether additional vitamins/FFA's/minerals/amino acids etc are necessary. Excess fat soluble vits, such as A & D, contained in organs such as liver are not recommended, but excess water soluble vits are of no consequence. Amino acids such as Taurine, are vital to ferret health and are relatively low in dietary muscle tissue. Tbh, this goes on and on. I'm not sure what answer you expected, as many on this forum have little clue regarding the appropriate dietary requirements of ferrets. I feed a mix of quality dried ferret food brands, a balan
  4. No, it's not rubbish at all. Some folk on here are complete idiots and wouldn't recognise proper ferret husbandry if it kicked them up their gormless arses. Edited to say...regardless of the 'x' years experience they say they have... The saying 'There's no fool like an old fool' often springs to my mind when I read comments on here, plus you get the stubborn ones too who refuse to learn anything.
  5. Some basic info... ‘Jill Jab’ A veterinarian will inject the jill with a drug such as Proligestonen, as a method of hormone control to prevent oestrus (in-season). This should be administered before the jill comes into season (usually in March) and a repeat treatment may be required if the jill comes back into oestrus the same year. This injection can be painful and cause irritation at the injection site. Over 90% of jills will come back into oestrus the following year. Jill Jabs may cause a false pregnancy and pyometra is a potential risk.
  6. 100k????!! That would only buy a leg of one of these horses! Dont worry Ferret, Wilf knows nuffin and for that i will get repayed in full!! , as for other that one Leveller, he just came of the lead rein Flynn, just realised you've already commented on my colt. Sorry, my mind is warped, not sure whether I'm coming or going this weather! What horses do you have and what do you do with them? no bother, both Dead now, i had an ID/X TB 16 HH Jumping Foxhunter level before i retired her,and her son who was sired by a polish warmblood, he came out at 17 1 HH anyways
  7. If you look at your ferrets crap and find worms in it, then your ferrets intestines are so severely perforated and damaged they can no longer cope, as adult worms, designed to spent their life inside the host, are literally falling out of the ferrets arse. The presence of an early worm burden can be determined by a faecal egg count, haven't ever known of a ferret owner to request one though. Ferrets aren't as suceptible to worms as other species are, but feeding raw meat can introduce internal parasites (not just necessarily worms), as can external parasites (i.e flea or tick born infections).

Just looked through the thread and noticed, so sorry if I seemed rude in not replying! Anyway, the silly money top horses go for nowadays is scary. Why I bought myself a foal end of last year, cause if he turned out to be any use when he was a 4 yr old, I couldn't afford him then. Put a few pics of him on
  10. Fully agree with you. I feel very sorry for the ferret, my guess is Open Pyometra, unless it gets appropriate vet tx asap, it's a goner. What a shame that the keyboard and this forum came before the telephone and a vet.
  11. Ferrets are more closely related to dogs than cats. Dogs, cats, foxes & ferrets are all susceptible. Lions/hyenas/African hunting dogs are even infected by it. Personally, I have my dog and ferrets vaccinated against it, because usually by the time an outbreak of CDV in an area is made public, many infected animals are already dead. I wasn't charged a consultation fee for any of my animals, just for the vaccs, even though the vets gave them all a thorough checkover before they were given the shot. The vet also kept them for 30mins after the vacc to ensure they didn't have any adverse react
  12. Looks like play fighting to me. If they were mine, I'd keep them separate 'til the sutures were removed.
  13. I use the Beaphar shampoo. Mine get bathed twice yearly, when they are moulting to get rid of the old coat. Washing them too often dries the skin & coat and makes them smell worse as they over-compensate to replenish their coat oils. And yeah, ferrets are generally marked down at a show if they smell of shampoo instead of a ferret! As others have said, clean bedding etc reduces the smell anyway.
  14. I only use Hibiscrub for wound cleaning, or for washing my hands before cleaning wounds. It's pretty potent stuff, not great for use as a shampoo and pretty expensive so I tend only to use it when it's warranted.

  16. Kits are kits, they will nip. Not a fan of the flicking on the nose, gagging them or putting nasty substances on your hands. Defo make sure they have full bellys before handling them, don't get them over-excited after a feed though or you may have ferret puke to clear up! Best thing is for a ferret to associate handling with a postitive experience. If you cover your hands in nasty tasting stuff, the ferrets MAY learn not to bite, but they might also think hands are nasty. Not a good outcome!
  17. just a couple of questions on that theory....I feed mine the same way, give them meat last thing at night and then the next morning take it out. My ferrets are very energetic, in great shape, great coats etc.....how can that be if I'm not giving them what they "need"?? Obviously my ferrets can only eat at night, but they're running free in the yard all day long, they spend a fair amount of time asleep but in total a good few hours playing, running and exploring in the yard. If they weren't getting enough food they wouldn't have the energy for that, surely? Also, I'm assuming they have p

  19. Happy ending, very glad you found her. Hope she recovers well. Atb
  20. I'm with Ideation on this one. Why I opted to have my jills spayed, takes hormones out of the question along with other issues. Never heard of the trick with the Mandibular nerve system before, but it's great to learn something new. With bad biters I always carried a wee tub of vaseline in my pocket. When they latched on, covered their nose with it and they soon let go. Good luck with her.
  21. Read the thread on 'Vitamin Treat Paste'. Might help with your decision.
  22. I do the massages myself on my horses as a daily routine. Along with 'strapping' and stretches. But I see no harm in having someone do it for you if your horse requires it.
  23. That's a very twisted point of view.....
  24. Depends on what ferrets are fed as a 'natural' diet, doesn't it? Required quantities of certain essential vitamins, FFAs & protein aren't contained in every meat source. It wasn't be being a smart ass, i would genuinely like to know? I feed a mixed whole carcass diet. I was just wondering what 'extras' are in the stuff. Ultimately, there are no 'extras', just supplementary components, provided your ferrets are getting everything they need from their usual diet. The Beaphar product is a complementary supplement/treat containing Taurine & Biotin, amongst other elemen
