I bought a 3-9 x 50 mill dot from jsr with mounts for just under £30 inc postage. It's under the heading "credit crunch special" in "airgunner" magazine, but it does not show them on the website. Ordered it mon morning received it tues morning, that's service! Optic clarity is very good for the price, and they are parallax fixed at 30 yds. Great Value for money, (dont mind getting it bashed about in the field for that price!) Hope this helps, Andy

It sounds daft, but when hunting at very close ranges, i.e. 10-15 yds, put your normal ammo in back to front. At this range there is minimal loss of accuracy. Then you dont need to buy two lots of pellets. Aerodynamicly, round nose pellets are more ballistcly efficient at sub-sonic speeds (99.9% of all air rifles), than their pointy nosed friends. Just look at jet planes, sub sonic, i.e boing 747 etc =round nose, super-sonic i.e. concord = pointed nose. I think more money has been spent on the aerospace research than on air gun ammo, but no doubt this research is used by pellet manu

Just thought I'd post photos of my best evenings shooting so far. One of my customers owns an old military station which consists of 14 acres of fenced in, and razor wired land, with his bungalow in the middle. (No military buildings exist on it anymore) He comes into work last week complaining of his rabbit problem, jokingly (but realy meaning it) I say "let me come and bring my air rifle and blat some for you!" Below supersonic speeds, round nose have the better balistic coefficiency, whereas, above the speed of sound, pointed noses have the best coefficiency. Look at aircraft, jet liners,ie 747 etc= rounded noses=below speed of sound. Fighters, ie Tornado, Euro fighter etc. pointed noses= above speed of sound. (ths space shuttle kind of f**ks that argument up though, hope no one will realise ) I believe it is down to there being a greater surface area on pointed pellets, so more friction. No need to heat as air rifle barrels are quite soft (compared to full-bore rifles), (don't suppose the chap heated it up to bend it in the first place ) Steel dosn't take too much to bend or straighten, just clobber it once then check, then a little more brute force if needed. Andy p.s if there is a fly-press in the super-shed it will make the process very easy (BUT BE WARNED, BE GENTLE!!)

I had a Webley Hawk Mk3 which someone had fired without the barrel being returned to the breech, result, barrel bent upwards (so much so, you could see the barrel in the scope picture). All I done was to take the barrel off then rest it on two blocks of wood (one at each end of the bend, centre of bend facing upwards) and gently smack the bend out using a rubber mallet or hammer and wooden block) (Easy for me to say being a blacksmith, and bending metal for the past 20 years) Dont worry about it being perfect, as long as you can zero it, no matter how bent the barrel is, the pellet will

The question that I am about to ask has been puzzling me for some time now. Why do we use Foot/Pounds as a measurement of pellet power? As an engineer, I know Foot/Pound, (Newton/ Meters in metric), is a measurement of Torque! WARNING GEEK STUFF BELOW! No probs Millet . Mole catcher is correct in saying that certain springers and certain pcp's react opposite to pellet weights, ie a heavier pellet may push a springer over but the same weight pellet may make a pcp lower powered (haven't worked out just why, yet ). On answer to the actual thread question, fill gun with air, check the gun over a crono (average fps over a dozen or so shots), turn screw 1/2 turn (any direction) re-check readings over crono with the same pellets. Looks like you hadn't changed the pellet weight on the crono millet. Formula is velocity(fps) x velocity(fps) x pellet weight (grains) Devided by gravitational constant(450240) equals muzzle energy in ft/lbs 733x733x10.6 devided by 450240=12.64 ft /lb (over powered) if you change the pellet weight for the lighter one, keeping the velocity the same you get:- 733x733x8.4 / 450240=10.02 ft/lb (incorrect pellet weight) this is your reading from your second picture! Starting from scratch mate. In theory a PCP is only an air receiver, a couple of high pressure valves, and a hammer and trigger (sounds simple!) the barrels are the only things that I couldn't make! Owning my own small engineering firm does help a bit with the whole project though Also knowing a couple of people that have made rifles in the past helps! (but they got their barrels years ago for 20quid each ) Cheers Andy. Will post piccys when I eventually get underway.

Does anyone know the best place to get a couple of .177 rifle barrels from, as I am soon to be making a couple of PCPs. Don't think I can buy them mail order anymore! Or does anyone have some at a reasonable price Cheers Andy

My tx was running at 12.4 ft/lbs. I was advised by a member of the shooting club where I belong, to put a walnut sized (no need to be exact) blob of moly grease in, and around the spring, and hey presto it now does 11.6 ft/lbs. (It was quiet before, but now its almost silent!) Regards Andy

At least with a bit of weight on your gun, you will be able to creep up on the bunnies and clobber them over the head with it now. (probably more effective than you shooting at them) It looks good Can't wait to see it in action on Thursday evening. Andy

Just one question to those who say that loosing their child is punishment enough. Remember whem Waco Jacko dangled his baby off a balcony? If he had dropped the child to its death would you say that "it's punishment enough" then? I think not. You would have wanted him strung up, and rightly so. You will probably say that this bears no comparison to this case, I disagree! Leaving three nippers alone, while you get pissed, or dangling them from a 5th floor balcony, in both cases the parents must be held accountable! Andy
