  1. No probs mate. Its worth a try! Sorry to babble on too Im not as experienced as some but id like to think i understand animals fairly well and have learnt from some good gundog trainers that i have around me. Whatever i can pass on i will! I was told of another way to get around this issue which is to hold the pups bowl while it eats and the same for bones and chews. It gives the message that youre there to help, and that the pup doesnt need to be wary of you. It basically reinforces the same message as the thing with the rabbit. I was told that its better to start this one from a little
  2. It sounds to me like the dog is scared of you taking its catch. You need to earn its trust and give a reward. The dog has made the catch and its thinking that your just going to take the rabbit away. At this point the game/fun is over. You need to make it seem like the dog will get more from retreiving rather than just having the rabbit taken away. Next time you get a rabbit get the dog to stay by you whilst holding the rabbit make a fuss of the dog when its staying by you with the rabbit and make it feel that being around you whilst holding the rabbit can be fun and that the fun doesnt st
  3. Doesn't matter what dog it is if your going to excersice it regular then theres a very good chance that it will be quiet in the kennel. If you leave it on its own for hours on end then it may very well whine/bark the place down. Never ever though i'd agree with you Lab pmsl I like to add some sense in with all the pish.........next sensible post pencilled in around late August, look out for it.......... Your right though Lab, The amount of folk who contact me having problems with whippet pups being noisy and doing the wall of death around there living room, when asked how fa
  4. Same as above mate. Dogs whine for a number of reasons including boredom but from my experience, adult dogs that whine or bark mainly do so as there is attention involved so the dog thinks that barking = affection (good or bad) or any form of attention such as pulling the dog toward you to "calm it down". The trick is to nip it in the bud when the dog is still a young pup - any breed. I think that some people have trouble laying the law down when a pup is young because they see it as being cute when it barks and whines. What they don't realise is that this will become learned behavior for when
  5. Thanks sowhat! Hes going to have a big pair of back legs on his to. Just like jack. Ive been thinkin about this toe, does anyone know if apple cidre vinager would help by reducing calcification? Im no good at science but my train of thought was that it works for arthritis which is calcification of the joint so it should work for this......?
  6. Thanks for the reply samba. A few have suggested trimming his nails back a bit. He's my first running dog and I thought that road walking and keeping them in a run with a concrete pad would wear them down far enough but you live and learn. It's just a shame that it's at a good dog's expense. First and foremost I'll be going to the vet though so he can make a fair judgement himself. Off topic here but Sowhat, these were from Saturday. For some reason my messenger won't let me upload pictures at the moment. and one more to come...
  7. Here's a picture of the toe. Sorry about the poor photography. Sam
  8. Thanks for his details Mally. Ill be in touch with him as everyones recommending him
  9. Hi Geoff, Im on my phone but i've taken a couple of pictures and ill get them up tomorrow. ATB Sam
  10. Thanks for the comments an the pms. Ill try paul evans and see what he says. I cant do anything until a week today anyway but ill let you know what he says. The dog is only 2 years old and rehoming to a pet home is no option for me - not in my moral code im afraid. Ill try keeping his nails short and biking him as it doesnt seem to have a negative effect. If nothing can be done and it doesnt improve, he will still get his fair share as he is a good ferreting dog. Thanks again for the comments. This site is at its best when someone is after advice and people are willing to help! ATB
  11. Also, can anyone tell me what causes this? Is it breeding or something that I'm doing wrong/not doin enough of as i have a pup now that I obviously dont want to go the same way? ATB Sam
  12. Thanks for the info moll. That was the last thing i wanted to hear to be honest but thanks again. I will try and get hold of this Paul Evans but does anyone know of any others? Im not overly fussed on how far away it is as long as they're good and it isnt landsend or somewhere! ATB Sam
  13. Ye, its still swollen and hard. Always been the same. Its not painful to touch unless hes lame. ATB Sam
  14. Ive got a whippet type dog and over last season he picked up a knocked up toe on his front foot. He was given plenty of rest and i seeked the advice of a vet too. They just said to give it about a month of rest and it should be fine. I did this and after that time i carried on goin lamping etc but every now and then after a run he was lame on the same foot for a day or so. This didnt happen every time, or even just on long runs, there was no rhyme or reason to it. Again, i spoke to the vet who said that i probably didnt give it enough time so to cut a long story short, i ended cutting my
  15. I think this is a good thing mate an totally depends on how and where you brought your dog up. I have a mate whos dog does this as she was brought up on land that she wasnt able to run flat out on. The good thing about this dog is that she knows when she can and when she cant do it otherwise she wouldnt catch anything in big open, flat fields as shes nowhere near up to speed when the rabbit takes off. If your dog is doing the above then id be proud if i was you! ATB Sam
  16. Some really good pics on here and some lovely dogs! Here are a few of my pup. Coming up to 6 months old. Sorry if some of you have seen these but I don't care Edited to say that the last pic was when he was about 4 - 41/2 months ATB Sam
  17. I think the same as most comment mate. I have a non ped whippet from sooty sam and laguna lines, iv had one full season with him and hes been great. Its great fun watching him work but due to thin, tight skin, hes had a couple of cuts which required treatment and time off which in turn, meant loosing about 6 weeks out of the season in total. Iv recently got a pup and i took a long time deciding what to get and chose to get a lurcher (beddy whip x whip grey - pics on another recent thread on here) for the above reasons but also i felt that the whippet didnt have quite enough speed on
  18. Hi dave, Well im sorry about that mate! They are both very nice people bud. I think hes supposed to be tryin to breed another bitch in a few months, penny? He put a dog to her about the same time as sheila but she didnt take. If i was you, id make myself first in line mate. You couldnt get a dog from a better place. Breeding for his own use from an excellent racing bitch (from what iv read on other forums like k9 community anyway). Mine is turnin into a real speed demon! All his dogs are a great temerament, they're all very calm which means the pups have the best start at turnin
  19. Very good mate. ATB with him this season! We tend to leave a few nets off to give the dogs a go at it too because imo, the best bit about hunting is watching your dogs do what they do best! Sam
  20. mine is 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy 22 inch sam good rabbit dog day and night atb troter Yeh i bet mate. Hes going to be doing mainly lamp work with a bit of ferreting too so should be ok. Hes about 19 ish tts at the moment, 5 1/2 months and as long as hes got more than another inch in him (which im sure he has!) ill be more than happy. My whippet dog is just over 20tts and does me great. How olds your troter? Hes a nice looking dog! Sam
  21. Thank you mate. I cant wait to see his pup. It'll be interesting to compare seen as there were just 2 in the litter. Iv not seen her since i took mine at 10 weeks. All his dogs are a credit to him, including mine. If he were to breed again and if i had the room and work to warrent it, id be first in line for another off him in a heartbeat. ATB Sam
  22. Hi northern lad, yeh, hes brother yo Geoffs Milly out of sheila. Hes coming on really well. Enjoying having a pup again but cant wait for the winter! ATB Sam
  23. Thanks for the comments guys. I know troter! I'm sure I've asked before but what's the breeding of yours? Borntohuntbow, mines a whip grey x beddy whip.
