A Bit more on the "Greyhound" Mr. Crozier told me that when he first hunted the pack, foxes were not so plentiful as now, twelve couple being a good record for a season, but he wrote to me on January 2l, 1889: " The Blencathra Hounds have had a capital season so far. Foxes turned out the most numerous that I can remember, they have already accounted for twelve brace,” and in recent years 25 to 30 brace, or even more, besides a large number of cubs, have been killed and gathered in one season. It was his opinion that the preservation of foxes in the lower country, hunted by the Cumberland

I'm given to understand by the people in white coats that with luck you will be able to get DNA, apparently they get it from Egyptian mummies!

Thank you, your probably right about the dog foxes, as for the "greyhound" they have gone long gone, but maybe their genes are in today's lot as for sure they mated with them ?who knows, as for today's big foxes I don't really know or have an opinion This chap is talking about a greyhound type "Fierce as a tiger, and long as a hay-band, and with an amiable cast of features very like the Chancellor of the Exchequer," is very bad to kill "top o' t' ground," and still worse when he gets into a burn (borran). had some e mails asking for some more info, hope this will help, taken from http://www.wildlifeonline.me.uk/ a good site O ye'll tak' the high fox and I'll tak' the low fox In his 1816 A History of the Earth and Animated Nature, poet-turned-naturalist Oliver Goldsmith wrote of how there were three ‘types’ of fox in Britain: the largest, tallest and boldest Greyhound fox (pictured left in an engraving in Colonel Talbot's 1906 Foxes at Home) that would “attack a full grown sheep”; the small, but strongly build Mastiff fox; and the smaller still and least common Cur fox, which “lurks about h

such is the power of the internet and the "grapevine" we already have one mask we are going to try to get DNA from and one other possible candidate, thanks to those who got in touch but don't stop, at the moment we are only doing the lakes but there are references to greyhounds in England, Scotland and Ireland too, perhaps as has been suggested they were just "big foxes but it would be good to know their history

Written quite a bit on the main site about Greyhound Foxes http://lakelandhuntingmemories.com/index.htm , some believe others don't, in an effort to sort it out for once and for all we have kicked off a research project, and hope you might be able to help, if you know of any fox mask or taxidermy body with a traceable history pre 1900 I'd appreciate a contact. We hope to do some DNA testing, http://lakelandhuntingmemories.com/LostFoxes.htm http://lakelandhuntingmemories.com/LostFoxes_2.htm

Lakeland Hunting Songs Vol 2 Review by J. Mallett All those years ago when Ron and I were at school together, never did I think I would be a huntsman for a fell pack for 29 seasons and Ron would be writing books on fell hunting in Lakeland? Once again Ron has written an excellent book about Lakeland hunting capturing songs and anecdotes. Without Ron's dedicated research into Lakeland hunting as it was in years gone by a lot of these stories and songs would be lost for ever. This book is very reasonable priced and makes wonderful and interesting reading. I can only speak highly of his book

HUNTING SONGS VOL 2 A REVIEW BY NEIL SALISBURY Ron Black is a Cumbrian whose ancestors can be traced back several hundred years and have been immersed in the local hunting culture for as long. Over the last few years he has been extremely prolific in producing a superb series of small books tracing the history of hunting in his native Cumbria. These books have been well researched, and whilst not especially grand tomes have been extremely popular by being succinct, extremely well focused on their individual topics, reasonably priced and have secured an important place in many a hunting b

A HUNT RECORD FROM ULLSWATER 2 On Monday, hounds met at Glencoin, and struck a line which led up Linkindale, over past Sheffield Pike and on to Greenside Crag above the lead mines, where the fox was unkennelled. The route taken was up the top of Sticks Pass and the Raise, then descended and crossed by Keppel Cove climbed Catchedicam and up Swirral Edge to the top of Helvellyn. The fox descended by the path leading to Grasmere, and went through Wythburn to the head of Thirlmere Lake. Climbing to the fell again near the Nag’s Head Inn, hounds received a rather severe check by coming in co

http://sonsofsavages.blogspot.co.uk/ Began reading and sent Ron a note to say how much I was enjoying it. Lots of information plucked from court records and a family history section contributed by Jean Gidman as well as incites from George Stewart all tell the story of Bobby Troughton and his life's desire to hunt Otters. A great read with historical facts depicting a well lived life, touching, humorous, and most of all giving you a sense of life and the hunting of Otters with hounds in 19th century Kendal. It's wonderful how things work sometimes to preserve these small seemingly insig
