  1. Yeh, i'll definately try and get some footage and if you want to train your dog I can tell you the method I used, which seems to have worked. It took me a long time to come up with an easy way to train the dog without spending money on fresh truffles or spending hours trying to do it. I think i'm going out this weekend for the first time so fingers crossed i might find 1 or 2.
  2. Sandy could be ok, depends on the pH of the soil. If you search youtube then theres lots of videos on people finding them in the UK. This will be my first year hunting them as i've got a dog thats up to the job now, but i've been interested in them for years. Honestly though, its definately worth trying especially if your into your mushrooms, they can be found in more places than you'd think. And its the Black Summer Truffle (Tuber aestivum) that is found in the UK
  3. Something to do in the summer though when the crops too high for lamping and theres too many young rabbits for ferreting. And you get a good price if you get a good haul. Down south is usually the best place for truffles, espescially Wiltshire
  4. Terriers are good at finding them too, I began training my patterdale but the lurcher turned out to be better so just concentrated on her. The best out of them all though is my black lab, she's got a brilliant nose and she obidient. You'll find truffles under oak, hazel, evergreen oak and beech trees where the soil has a high pH (between 7.5 and 8. So look out for chalky land!!
  5. I've got my lurcher trained up to search for truffles, Basically sarted out burying bits of cotton wool soaked in truffle oil. Its about time to start looking for them now aswell, so keep your eyes peeled
  6. Just stick to the biscuits, if shes hungry then she'll eat them. Try and stay away from any milk or cheese as ferrets are lactose intolerant and struggle to digest dairy products. I sometimes feed mine a bit of rabbit, but not in big amounts so they don't go and store it in the nest box, where it will go off.
  7. I'd split them up just to be safe. Better to be safe than sorry.
  8. Good idea getting a camera set up in the box. What do you do about the light levels though if your nest box is completely enclosed?? Surely it'd be hard to see them...
  9. I personally split mine up as I find this to be the best way, but some people don't have a problem with keeping them together. Did you touch them or disturb them in the first few days?
  10. Is that actually a joke? I've had worse paper cuts than that little bite!!
  11. Beddy x Whippet are fantastic for the job, mines got a bit of greyhound in aswell so she's good for lamping too.
  12. The swelling won't go down for about 2 weeks, so she might currently be coming out.
  13. Nice beddy cross mate wats she like to work with? An absolute dream!! She's nearly 7 now so shes got a tonne of experience under her belt, still plenty quick enough though
  14. Mine's the lighter coloured one, she's beddy/whippet x greyhound but nearly 7 years old now
  15. Here's a few pictures from ferreting on saturday at some new permission we got. Last weekend we got 25 in just an afternoon and this week we got 20 in an afternoon. Last year the rabbits ate off a whole 20 acre field of wheat, so theres a massive problem. Luckily we haven't caught any young rabbits yet, although we have caught several 3/4 grown ones, but these are probably down to the very mild winter we've had. Most of the rabbits were netted although the dogs did catch a few which slipped the net. Think we're going to keep going until the little bunnies appear, but that'll probably only be a
  16. Can't wait for ferreting this weekend!!

  17. Sorry, let me rephrase that, 'they can die'. I've heard/know of people its happened to. Think your being a bit naive and foolish risking it, that's just my opinion though...
  18. The jill usually dies unless its their first season in which case the go out of season naturally.
  19. Think he means retrieving the baby rabbits? Still, i'd be very impressed to see that!
  20. I feed mine daily and give them about 1 handful each. If i put in a full bowl they just eat all of it then s**t like mad for a few days!

    Ill Harris Hawk

Hi everyone, For the past few days my male harris has been panting (almost all the time), not eating as much and has had diarrhoea. Today he isn't eating at all and tend's to just sit panting or sit in the corner of his avery. He's gone down to 1lb 8oz which is nearly the lowest i've ever had him. After ringing the vet they suggested worming him (which i've now done) and hopefully this will improve his condition. If the wormer makes no difference then i'll be taking him to the vets ASAP. Anyone else had similiar problems before?? Any advice?? Thanks
