    We do them at three days. Before that they do not have as good a clotting factor and bleed more. You can do them up to 5 days but they seem to cry more and it seems to be more painful to them. So as to do less harm do it at 3 or 4 days. We use hemostats. You place the opened, curved hemostats against the skin and push in a bit, trying to get the dew claw behind the small bulb that encases it. On small pups use closer to the tip rather than the base of the hemostats. Hard to explain. But when you close the hemostats it will crush the blood supply and push the base of the dew claw out.     He is 5 months old. So not a little pup. He has allready been on coon, a couple of weeks ago and shows promise. He was out with his dam and got a little action. She took the worst of it, naturally!! He will most likely go over 15 but we do not think he will get too big. Dana is going to start him on squirrel soon, fur retrieves.     This is our first jagd. Yes, my husband will work him. He has allready been in on a coon hunt with his dam (week before we got him). He got a little action, he has some sores on his ears and on the scruff of his neck from it.. We farm in the USA. Raise corn, soybeans and cattle. SO we have alot of vermin to hunt. He will just go to the farm with my husband everyday and they will hunt whatever comes up that day. He is going to be too big to go to ground in our area of Ohio.     I have, after covering the crate with a blanket the night before, snuck up on the noisy dog and shook the crate real good and scolded them. It usually only takes two or three times of this cage rattling for them to get the idea. Try it!

    Make sure you stimulate the rectum too, to get them to poop. I use a piece of toilet paper dipped in warm water and gently rub the rectum till they void. Do the same on the vulva of little girls and the penis of the boys. Otherwise they will just plug up and croak!!

    Where you at in the US bones? We are in Ohio and have some coyotes you can come exterminate. Had a pack come in on a cow with a new calf last week. When my husband went out to drive the pair in to the barn, two yotes barked at him and didn't even seem afraid of him. That's a little too brave for me. He has started carrying a 410 with him to feed. Keep chasing those darn pests. Nice pack you have. The boys hunt coon with friends and their walkers. Cyndi

    Excellent advice juckler123. I worked for a vet for years. We always shaved the hair around a wound to make sure no hair inhibits the healing process. I use electric clippers but you can use scissors to remove the hair close to the skin too. I bet it will heal then.

    I can't say for your area of the world but here in the middle of the US we have a problem with fleas in the ground. I have had rabbits go under the crawl space on the house and infest the ground with fleas and then had them come into the house. That time I set off a pyrethrin flea bomb under the house. I also put a granular flea insecticide on the yard every spring and fall. I used to use dursban or diazanon but I think they took both off the market. So I will be at the mercy of whatever insecticide they have on the market next spring. I use my grass seeder and walk aroung the house spreading

    I am a farm wife from The US. My husband and children hunt. I am the dog freak in the family though. We are currently looking for a jagdterrier, for a sidekick, for my husband. Have had cattle dogs and hounds for years and we are looking forward to addding a terrier. I worked for a vet before the children came along and I teach dog obedience to 4H kids now.
