  1. Thanks a lot for your comments looks like I.ll be looking at fixed scopes again, sorry I didn't get back sooner but I.ve been away for a while. It wasn't only the long range targets I was thinking about when using the variable but the closer range targets. I was told you get a better field of view when you can move to a lower mag. Thanks again for your advice
  2. Never shot anything before, apart from an air gun and shotgun, on the airgun I have a variable hawk which works fine but I want to buy once and everyone says buy the best you can afford and I've been advised by the dealer that the ziess duralite is the best buy. If I'm going to be using it for fox and deer he reckons I need a variable scope, I don't have a clue that's why I'm asking the question.
  3. I thought if you magnified a target at 300 yards it would look like a target at 100 yards but if the cross hairs are much thicker then it must limit your picture of the target. As I said I am new to this and have only looked at them in the shop and have no field experience
  4. The only thing I'm not sure about is the way the reticle gets bigger with the magnification on the S&B
  5. I'm looking to buy a variable scope for use on a .243 x bolt to be used for fox and stalking. I am waiting on my FAC and have been looking around for a set up. I don't have any experience but I have decided on the x bolt because it feels good to me and it gets good reviews. I am now looking at scopes and at the moment I'm between a ziess duralyt 3x12x56 and a S&B 3x12x56. Has anyone any experience of these scopes as they both look great and I cant decide which one to go for. Any advice would be welcome. Cheers
  6. I think that s + B win it. do you think the illuminated dot is worth the extra money?
  7. I've got the Tikka T3 in .243 stainless/synthetic, had the trigger reset from new but also had to have it threaded, got a stainless pess moderator on it, its a bit front heavy but got an harris bipod on it but also carry stix when out, an old mate bought the x-bolt and that was already threaded, never got to shoot it but as you say a nice looking gun. Don't know where your based but your more than welcome to come and have a crack with it aslong as you pay for the ammo PM me if interested Thanks a lot for the offer but I'm on the west coast of scotland so a bit far to travel. It would be
  8. Just been down to the gun shop and had a look, I like the browning x-bolt and the dealer recommends it. I also had a look at the scopes and I was set on a S&B 8x56 but he is recommending the Ziess duralyt with or without illumination, about £250 more for illuminated (is it worth it?) The cost soon mounts up when you start to add all the extras.
  9. I think that I 'm sold on the fixed power scope 8X56. The only thing now is the rifle. I'll have to see if I can try a few rifles, I guess thats the hardest part is getting to actually try different types. As you say hopefully it's a long term investment so I'm in no great rush.
  10. I guess the best thing to do is try them out. When your in the shop everything seems great, maybe I should find a club and get some experience firing different rifles before I make the choice. I don't mind spending money on something that will last and not have to change after a few months because of making the wrong choice
  11. Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look at the Parker Hale. I never really thought about the moderator. Is there any advice on what is best to get and what sort of price range a decent model would cost. I hadn't considered a bipod either, thought about using sticks. I have a gun safe for shotguns so that should be fine.
  12. Hi, I'm looking for some advise on buying a .243 rifle. I have applied for my FAC and hopefully if I get it I will be spending some of my hard earned cash. I will be using the rifle mainly for deer stalking and I think that I have narrowed it down to a tikka lite or a browning x-bolt, synthic stocks and stainless barrels. I haven't tried the x-bolt but I am just looking for some advice just now as I am new to this. I have a budget of around £1600 so I was thinking about 800 on the rifle and the same again on the scope. Any advise would be most welcome. Cheers
  13. I've just started wildfowling and I am thinking of buying some decoys for mallard and grey lags. What are the best type of decoys for floating on a loch and how many of each would do to start off with. I am thinking of buying a couple of calls as well can anyone recommend a good make that is easy to learn. I want to buy a reasonable quality if they are good and will last for a good few years. Thanks

OK thanks., the wife booked this as a surprise for my birthday. Just thought I might have been able to fit something in while we were there. Maybe another time. Cheers
