No I like him on real rabbits- I shall leave the winching image with you- we had a good day out anyway.
-
So does that mean keep him off rabbits but let him chase bits of sacking? I see your logic there but surely there must be a way to enjoy both? Am I complete dimmock that doesn't realise racing dogs don't get the real deal? Sorry if I am being a dimmock but really appreciate the advise...a friend has suggest that they just tie me to the winch and then he'd win everything ( this is possibly true but the female figure doesnt drag that well methinks)

Racing was a disaster- they slipped him and he turned around and came back to me. No interest in the lure whatsover (but why would he want to chase a bit of sacking?) I was told to show him and the newbies we are won the smooth coated lurcher class. Really good to get out and talk to some real running dog folk in the flesh but sadly he had no reaction to the skins and dummies on sale. Shall continue our mooching and maybe have a look at some straight line racing where he can run to me. Love to take him out for a bunny run this evening as a reward but he's been awake more that 10 hours which i

I think the dummy would be best to get him retreiving- any thoughts on racing?
-
Maybe he had...silly bunny. My dog doesn't chase balls, sticks, toys or postmen. He ignores other gogs chasing things, the only thing he has ever shown a sign of chasing was the remains of his kill. I shall look out for a skin/toy thing at Game Fair this weekend that he shows a response to. Cheers all.

yeah nettles were a suggestion, the serpents scared me off a little bit last time I posted but only as it became about me and not my dog. Heading to lowther this weekend to see what this racing malarkay is all about....Pip won't retrieve it seems but does enjoy a play with the remains of his quarry ( would have had some explaining to do if anyone caught me throwing and whooping as he chased after the back legs of one of his catches) It keeps a wag in his tail but I was somewaht off put to find a rabbit carcass strung up on a tree in our new found hunting ground....I'm not into this prize showi

Sorry haven't been here for a while. My boy is coming along nicely but still keeps what he catches. Think I am too much of a worrier when it comes to injuries so I have two questions; Last week I let him out for a run on a sunny afternoon and he literally did this- spotted a bugs, leapt into a thicket, I could see his tail quivering thinking he had made a kill...he came out blinded. He was rolling his head onto the grass frantically until I called him back to me. Had to lift him over a fence and carry him back. No marks on him but eyeball retracted and eyelid shut as though he had no eyes. I b

Well said Runforyorlife- A dog on a cat near a road is a recipe for disaster to either...

I have always liked cats but then can emphasise with those that has a cheeky moggy coming on their house/messing on their garden. My boy seemed scared of them and after having had a swipe from one (for no good reason) at a mates house is now a bag of nerves everytime we are there....that said we went out for a quick scout for bunnies this evening and a black feral one ran from outside the warren he was obviously watching too. Managed to call the whip off as he clearly just saw a fluff running and gave chase- I don't want somebody's pet hurt and now, even more so, I don't want a torn ear/scratc

Errm fox digger I'm packing in the pole dancing for a while and will probably be out with the whippet looking for a few last bunnies of the season....(rabbits not the playboy variety) Nothing around this evening- guess it was a clear still night and they saw us coming. Will defo have to sort out a lamp as the head torch ain't cutting it! -

Thanks- esp Dogmagic there is some really good advice there. Just to clarify I am just chasing rabbits- the foxes were a case of mistaken identity.I honestly don't think he would chase one that crossed his path whilst out as he keeps clear of the ones by the stables even when they casually wander past. I was hoping to go out with a bloke in the area who lamps but he has been very ill recently.. so think that is for next season. Maybe he knows someone who can shoot those foxes as they will produce at least another four this year. The ferrets I will think about...met some the other da -

I am sure you are right- we do a lot of socialising with dogs- people he is better with. We have spent a lot of time learning ground but he has that whippet hard wire to run to anything. Maybe the Summer could be the making of him - I just want to see him happy and utilising the body he was blessed with....(I know that sounds a bit wrong) Good advice there- thanks x -

sorry, I know it is a long and involved post but thought I'd get some good advice here...nobody I know is involved in running dogs except to race em.. -
Hello again everyone. I have some questions ( I know some of you will think they are very stupid but thats the title of the post!) I have been taking my whippet out as previously discussed in the local area. Havent got myself sorted out with a lamp etc yet as not too sure how much I can devote myself to this and whether this is the best way to get my dog working and enjoying himself. I so far feel that we would both be better off working with ferrets but that is another animal to keep and as I don't do things by halves it would be a big commitment as I also am "horsey" When we are out, I t

Thanks- he's a quick lad and coming on a treat!

Slightly better pic-showing no interest in sitting bunnies, maybe just switches on when he finds?

Potassim permanganate/ purple spray same thing really. Can you not make butterfly stiches with some micropore (small strips accross the wound that pull it together and then vet wrap it ( self adhesive bandage you get form most farm stores) If this is done he should be able to walk out with a bit of black plastic (thick silage wrap stuff) strapped over the top. Main thing is to keep the wound clean and the edges as close as possible together. Good Luck!

Hmmm, not my own yard till the lottery win and adjoining yards are wired too. Figure if he learns the fox tracks then it will be better for him. He has been jumping a fair bit, good and clean. Recall is getting very good now so hopefully heading in the right direction. THANKS ALL

Scothunter thats what I am afraid of, when he took his first rabbit for me it was on the edge of a quarry and as he goes so fast- he has trouble stopping I thought it was him crying as he went off the edge. He is my best mate (shush dont tell the horse) first and foremost and I have said I want to get into this as it makes him sooo happy. I really don't mind so much if he inh=jure himself because of a flook or general dangers invloved but would be heartbroken if it were my fault as don't really know what I am doing and MY blood is up. He is currently languishing in MY bed with the duvet over h

Thanks guys, will get a pic when the old blackberry decides to work- he's 22inch so big for a whippet I guess and all chest and thigh. I'm holding off taking him back to the rabbits till this weekend- the recall has come along great and I've been practising "drop" with treats. That feels like the right thing to do and seems to be taken all in his stride. Maybe he's done this somewhere before. Best thing is that this dog "who may only eat every other day" is hoovering up whatever he is offered and has shed his old coat for a much shiner new one. promise will post a pic when have my tech back in

So proud of my boy tonight- let him off around our horse yard in hope of finding the beefy rat that has been causing so much trouble. Heard some clucking/quacking and let him off as there was some commotion on in one of the fields he set off like lightning. I had put on a head torch to see myself what was going on and he was giving chase to two full grown foxes! Not sure what happened but had a very scary onment when I heard a twang of wire (loads of it around the yard) and a yelp. Called him and he came straight back- not a mark on him thank god. Really got me thinking if it was him that ran

Hi, I guess I was really lucky with my dog- he caught the first thing we saw (well I just saw a zig-zag blur) I have found the people on here give really good advice so if they say yours will catch I'm sure it will. They also advised me on my post what to do when they do catch. I have been working off their advice and having found an old small quarry that seems to be rife with rabbits I can't wait to get out there and see my boy do what he was bred to. Keep us posted I'm already worried I wont match the pics on here of huge hauls but for the moment I'm in for the smile on my dogs face, althoug

Hey, take that as a compliment. Always enjoyed watching hounds work so just trying to get a similar smile on his face. Finding it all fascinating- Am a fimr believer that everyone, animals and peole get on a lot better eating and living as nature designed them to but will have to work up the nerve to skin a rabbit...
