I used to save the lemon ginger (leucistic) ones and pop them back in after ferreting on a place down in Somerset I used to work, soon a good population built up and they were as common as the grey/brown ones. Nice to see them in moderation. Black ones I always took as unlucky to catch so left them when out with the rifle or nets. I also tagged along when ferreting at a Safari Park 'Pet's Corner' once and there were allsorts of rabbits bolting there, including one that was as big as a hare and multi-coloured. You didn't know what was going to hit the nets next in there. Madness!

Localyokel, Unfortunately that's about how much the stuff costs now. Luckily I stockpiled loads of rings years ago when they were just pennies each so I should be ok for now but when they're gone I wil be forced into the market as you are. If there are any cheap suplliers then I too would be interested to know for the future. I am also a 'natural' twine man but I will have a go with this spun polyester next the lads are all raving about, it could be just the stuff. I have used heavy green MOD spun nylon for fox nets before but it is too heavy for rabbit nets I think. Where's the ch

I see your point mate, but if the breeding is not right (or could be better) or the first few months of the young pup's life is a fraught existence then you are faced with 'making a silk purse out of a sow's ear'. It was not my intention to slag off Plummer or Hancock - if folks want to buy their dogs from him then that's their choice, but it wouldn't be mine. The answer is putting a decent dog to a decent bitch to create a decent pup, simple as that really. OTC Thanks for the pics CW - my mix up between Romulus and Remus, it was 20 years ago!

Hancock's breeding programme goes against everything that the text book (including Plummer's writings) tell you - that's all I am saying. Take that pic of Chalkwarren's above - I think that's his (Hancock's) stud dog Romulus (or a stunt double). The yard at Hancock's is bare earth, covered in sh*t and junk, and his prize stud lives in a shack of a kennel like that. I mean, who in their right mind would shell out for a worm ridden half-cross whose parentage and line you only have his word for, and who you cannot see work because they don't. It doesn't bode well for a great beginning in

Exactly, Plummer's embellished fiction paved the way for Hancock to sell his legacy in collie/grey lurchers for ever more. If Brian Plummer's dogs were as good as he made them out to be then we'd all have sat back in awe in the 's when the man was still alive. I had the dubious pleasure of a night out with the 'legendary' Merle with Plummer, Hancock and two other chaps back in the day and it was left standing by a 'lesser' dog time and time again. The photos in his book of the same name were, by Plummer's own admission, pics of stiff long dead foxes from out of the freezer. He was a school tea

I use type 675 batteries from Boots in my Mk I collars and they last for ages OTC

Yes but they are not true Fenn traps - they are imported Chinky copies and are not up to the job like the real deal. OTC

Count them out and count them back in after netting up each bury and you won't lose any, whatever their colour. OTC

Bushing up around a wire set is ok if it is a runline against a pheasant pen, perimeter fence or suchlike but on an open run will arouse Charlie's suspicion straight away. Go for a plain and simple wire tealer like the one in ChalkWarren's pic and set it back in the brush where Foxy cannot see the wire above him for the twigs and branches already there. Bury your wires or leave them exposed to the elements for as long as you can to rid them of the shine, or at worst run a pinch of wet clay along the length of the wire to dull it down. Make sure you anchor it well to a decent sized post or tree

rat trap - which one?
OldTrapCollector replied to david2363's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Dave, I have a few of those Killgerm Boddis rat cages, brand new, unused, that I am open to serious offers for. PM if you're interested. OTC -
You're lucky to still have your own health and your dogs. Listen to sense and find another lamping partner - it's irresponsible people like him that give us all a bad press. OTC

The sun came up unfortunately and ruined it for me . . . I had no idea how many I had in the game larder until I gutted them all in the morning. I had a brace of foxes and a couple of hares as well if I remember right. I have the photos here somewhere, I will dig them out and post them. OTC

talk about taking the piss i found a rack of lamb ribs once in one of my fox snares it still had the tesco tag on it Some nut case once left a teddy bear in one of my fox wires years ago - what was all that about ??? OTC

£1.50 a-piece for clean netted or wired rabbits, 50p for shot ones, all gutted. As a young keeper I once shot 990 from the landrover one night, thinking I was going to be rich. The game dealer took one look at them all and offered me £30 as he couldn't cope with the quantity OTC

If you make one yourself make sure that the moggie cannot get his paw through the mesh for the bait without going in as they are buggers for trying to fishing it out. Simple to make with a sliding drop door from weldmesh with a wooden door. OTC

Have you tried crossing wild poley with a ferret before CW? I did some years back. I had a jill polecat I caught in a single end cage when it was about 4 weeks old, the trap didn't actually fire but the poley was under the tread plate and couldn't find her way out when I came to it. I tried to tame it but you really cannot put generations of wild blood behind them and she was as quick as lightning and very nervous. She never bit me but I didn't give a lot of chance to, she held ok but was always eyeing up an escape route. I crossed her with a really docile white hob and hoped the half-bree

I have not had any experience working a trammel net but am interested in trying to make and use one personally. Is the big window mesh square or diamond shape, and how big are the holes/meshes? OTC

I used some high tensile steel rods once and they worked a treat. I just had a loop welded in the end for the snare to fit to (single strand rabbit wire I used) and made up the Vee and trigger peg from ash or Hazel as I couldn't think of an easy way round that. Make sure the rods are not too springy to avoid the catapult effect though . . . OTC

About 150 times longer than a purse net! LOL!! Just keep knitting and don't watch the clock (or the calendar!) You'll feel so much better catching rabbits in your own net, a real sense of pride OTC
