LONG NET POLE GROMMETS
OldTrapCollector replied to ferreterno1's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
. . . That's what I was thinking I am not 'au fait' with the new quick set nets, but I have seen them when they were first put on the market. What does this grommet do and look like? OTC -
I have never had any problems in this kind of situation, it is your permission afterall. Just be careful with your dogs in the road that's all. It used to be a common site to see lads ferreting the roadsides but not so much these days for some reason. OTC

Spun Polyester Net Making twine
OldTrapCollector replied to OldTrapCollector's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
As Duckwing says you are wasting a hell of a lot of twine shape them and get more nets per kilo How many meshes do you start with and go out to then? 10 at the ring out to 18 meshes in the middle? OTC -
Spun Polyester Net Making twine

Thanks for the advice on the needles fellas - they are the ones I want. As for shaped nets, I always stay the same all the way down the net - 16 meshes wide on a 3 foot net and 18 on a 4 foot net. OTC -

Spun Polyester Net Making twine
OldTrapCollector replied to OldTrapCollector's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Cheers for the help with the spun poly twine, now for something else I would like to find . . . Who sells the white smooth plastic netting needles these days? I don't want the yellow ridged cheapo affairs I want the original smooth white plastic ones, suitable for knitting rabbit nets and passing through a 1" ring, about 9 or 10" long. Anyone know where from and how much? Your help is greatly appreciated OTC -
I will also keep schtum on the clappers too for the sake of Ditch's book, so don't ask me either  OTC
-
John b, I know exactly what that trap is you have pictured , and a bit about its controversial past but I will let the Fenn expert tell you - Ditch, what can I say? OTC

PM from me also OTC

Ditch, I'm not sure of their full distribution but the only outlet I have ever heard of for these was CTF Field Sports, maybe they were only advertised there for their short production life? OTC

I used wire mesh 'curtains' hanging down from each side of the ladder to stop the jacks getting back out. I put a side funnel into one end of the cage trap as well to enable it to work by either or both means. I used it as a pheasant catcher in the Spring too. I never caught a magpie or jay in one, but plenty of jackdaws and rooks, and the odd single carrion occasionally. Magpies would drop into a 'hawk' trap with a single drop door (like those finch traps we were discussing the other day but 3 foot square) or a larsen fine but wouldn't go into a letterbox. OTC

I was once told that to shoot a driven grouse, catch a salmon on a rod and line and kill a prime stag in the same day would be the greatest achievement of life. I might try to do something like that when I am retired and have time to spare. As for the abseiling mentioned above - that's what I teach for a living so no challenge there for me!! OTC

Perhaps it doesn't matter where you trap them then, so long as it is on their flightline. I just found it worked for me at the feeders or sheep trough. It just seems that something that works with them one day may never work again though, they are such odd things to catch. I have caught loads one day and none the next, or an empty trap for 2 days and then it was bursting at the seams. OTC
-
Try putting it up over a stock feeder full of feed or pheasant feed bin, whatever the black buggers have been feeding on. I had fair success with putting the trap next to the feeder for a few days so they were used to seeing it and then putting it over the top on the third day. As Big Fish said already - don't let any escape, and don't let any of the free ones see you killing the captives or your catching days will be reduced drastically. Don't leave any dead birds near the trap either OTC

Spun Polyester Net Making twine

How do you use the wire toggles? Any chance of pics? I have always used 1" steel/nickel rings but am open to experimentation, if the ideas work then I will use them. Thanks for the feedback so far OTC -
Fellas, I have just got my sample card from Engel & Co and am now confused as to which one to use for purse net making. The card has got 20/6, 20/9, 20/15, 20/18, 20/21, 20/24 and 20/36 on it. To me the 20/36 looks like the most useful. What do you guys use? How many nets can you get out of a kilo? One other thing - do you have to double knot spun polyester? OTC

I have never used the pocket poppers myself or the weldmesh cubby tunnels but they look ok for squirrels and mink but I am not sure whether rabbits and rats would be comfortable passing over the plastic bases. Maybe a good layer of dirt in the bottom would get round this though. Interesting stuff about the 3 notched triggers - I must admit I thought that was why they were made that way but didn't know for sure. OTC

a mate of mine who has be twenty years ferreting was once out ferreting and entered his ferret down a hole and fox bolted from a near by hole he reckons noise must of scared it out I have bolted cats, rats, foxes and stoats over the years, as well as a couple of owls. It makes you hesitate for a split second or two when you make a dive for the net. It also makes you wonder what is in front of the ferret at the end of a dig when you're groping round in the dark . . . OTC

I can vouch for this, and I have first hand experience of both parties mentioned! OTC

That's what I reckon too. I spent many nights lamping with my old Blue Eye 200,000CP lamp and cannot see the point in having anything more powerful that you can light up a fox 2 miles away. No rifle shot should really be attempted at 150 yards plus IMO, and no dogs need to be slipped on game so far away. It seems all the rage to have an X-Million CP light but if all you're doing is ruining your chances then perhaps it is not such a good idea. Good fieldcraft will get you within range of most and then they only need lamping once as they won't live to tell the tale. Why pay good money for a

Good news Dan, keep her on a tight slip now OTC

I am not going to give you a hard time mole catcher, we are all here to learn and pass on advice including me, and I am open to correction from other members. Correct me if I am wrong P&G but that 'stop' in your pic is just a sleeve of tubing to receive the wire tealer pin smoothly? It is not a stop at all. I also believe that a stop on a wire is a nicety not a legal necessity, to prevent leg hold captures of stock and deer. The only lawful part so far as I am aware is that the snare runs freely and not self locking in any way, and that they are checked inside every 24 hours, altho
