    Shame there is no You Tube demo for staightening by air gun or steam bucket, not that I have seen anyway. I still haven't got round to doing anything with mine yet, been too busy, and out shooting today so it might be a while before I do them OTC

    I rubbed a little neatsfoot oil into mine from the saddlery - but you can get leather balsam if you like, probably the same though ... OTC

    I once hitched home to the Midlands from Somerset and the first person I stopped actually went within 5 miles of my house which was unbelieveable - I got home quicker than I ever had done before! I never had a problem hitching, I met some interesting folks, and I also have picked up a fair few myself too One tip - I used to deliberately trap the seatbelt in the door as I shut it getting in, that way I learned how to open it up again if I needed to get out again sharpish Oh and I once picked up a couple going home from Glastonbury - not a good idea after a week or more without a shower

    I really cannot remember the dimensions or shape - I just know that it took me about a week of trying to get it right After that it was easy, but I have forgotten it all now. That was 25 years ago ... OTC

    I remember making whistles from old fired 12 bore cartridge cases with dowel inserts years ago - very frustrating, but once you work it out you wonder where you went wrong! It is all in the the length of the chamber and angle/placement of the hole OTC

    I use 4mm wire 'staples' made from fencing wire about 6 inches long - they hold firm and go in ok in the hard ground - and they are free! OTC

    I have heard of the 'steaming over a pan with a towel on top' method before, I just wanted to hear if anyone had any different methods so it has been good to hear of all of them. I have a load of cut sticks in the shed - I cannot resist if I see one when I am out shooting - they are all holly or hazel I think although there might be some blackthorn in there at the back that has been in there for 5 or 6 years or so. Some are thumb sticks but most have been cut with either root knobs in the case of the holly, or with good sized wood blocks at the top for the hazel. There's plenty of scope th

    Does the directly applied hot air gun method have any effect on the bark of the stick? It doesn't lift it or burn it does it? And just to check - we are talking about a paint stripper-type hot air gun aren't we? OTC

    Are there any stick makers on the forum? I have some well seasoned shanks that need a bit of straightening - does anyone know any easy way to do it? OTC

    I have tried tights, pillow case etc but found it makes the licquor cloudy as the finer sediment still gets through - I had some muslin squares from a brewery before and they were pene elrfect - I wondered if anyone else uses the same? OTC
