After seeing a friend of mine's BSA Ultra the other day and quite liking the handling of the short rifle but not being too taken by the finish of it, I wondered if there were any other worthwhile short PCP's on the market? I am not current on what's what with airguns any more. OTC

fenn traps only half catching
OldTrapCollector replied to trenchfoot's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
The original 'Humane Spring Traps' were designed prior to the 1954 Act being considered, they could not ban the gin until a suitable replacement had been thoroughly tested, hence the Act was drawn up in 1954 but the gin was not actually banned until July 1958 to give trappers chance to purchase new traps. The traps that were finally approved were invented long before then!! The tunnel IS PART OF the trap - to work successfully it must meet with an upper surface which ensure that the captive is held humanely where intended, and not allow it to jump into free space, often at a contorted angl -

This is simply not true - I can safely say that the Fenn trap WAS designed to jump, it was the not first trap made in UK to do so either. The tunnel was part of the planned design back in the late 1940's. OTC -

So you do not check your traps within each and every 24 hours? This is a legally mandated necessity for humanity if nothing else ... I have written evidence from the inventor of the Fenn trap that whilst it was designed to be used within the confines of a tunnel, and its use is implicitly determined by the tunnel dimensions, it would also work adequately as an uncovered trap, for rats. The original Ministerial approval that they were given back in 1957 dictated that they should be used within 'a purpose built artificial tunnel' but also 'for the taking of rats or mice and set in the op -

That's not the intention, and though they are designed to jump when sprung, they shouldn't be hitting the ceiling. A correctly set Fenn should be able to catch no matter how high the ceiling. The Fenn trap was designed to kill within the confines of the tunnel or hole, not to be used with free space above it. I have categoric proof of that in the form of development documents written by the inventor (amongst other things) So, the Fenn does have to be set so that it can fire cleanly but no more, big holes or tunnels are no good, simple as that. Rhodey, I know that it is only a sketch but the trap is the wrong way round!! If it is set like that you will rarely catch anything at all, it is not designed to work that way. The trap should fit sideways on in the tunnel - the coil spring at one side and the thumb loop on the other OTC -
Tomano1 If you cannot afford to make or use proper snares then you shouldn't be snaring rabbits, and neither should you be encouraging others to 'apply cruelty by thrift' Make some proper snares using brass wire, with eyelets, and peg them down properly. Not only will they be more humane, but far more likely to catch PM me with your address and I will send you some rabbit snares free of charge if you are that hard up OTC

Something eating my catch
OldTrapCollector replied to THE GRIFF's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I have been having my tunnel traps stripped of squirrels by badgers these past few weeks so I wouldn't rule them out. They will pull a Fenn trap chain ring out straight trying so a brass wire half hitched to a fence wouldn't stand a chance against them. And what's more, they are everywhere, the countryside is over-run with the grain-guzzling digging machines ... OTC -

In favour of the NZ produced DOC traps no doubt that are ridiculously hard to set in anything but a massive solid wooden tunnel. I visited the factory that makes them in Auckland not long back to talk to the design team - there were so many shortfalls - they had no idea - none of them were trappers, and the person that designed the trap was an engineer so it is hardly surprising really. Fenn's original tests were so stringent by the Ministry that thousands of other trap designs failed and were discarded - the probelem with the modern Fenn is the power of the springs - it has been the same

The Aldrich spring snare is on the Approved Traps list and is perfectly legal to use (it is just the nomenclature of the target animals for them that is open to conjecture!) The definition of spring trap is that of a trap that relies on a spring to activate the trap. Any trap used in GB with the exception of rats, mice and mole traps is subject to the Humane Traps Approval process first used in 1954 prior to the banning of the gin trap in 1958. Spring activated cage traps for birds have also been subject to legal action on two different occasions and subsequent banning in the past to my kn

Move your trap - simple! They won't go in after they saw you catch the first lot, they are canny birds Move the trap to another place and try again, you will see - get them used to feeding inside first without the funnel in place on white bread and suchlike, then after a couple of days put the funnel on and see the results. Then move it again, always moving, always catching OTC

Need Help Identifying a Mole Trap
OldTrapCollector replied to Steve Albano's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
The Fenn loop mole traps were produced in small numbers in the 80's - a single catch type and a double ended rectangular one like a flat Duffus trap, there were a few slightly different variations made by the company over their short production lifetime I am still looking for some of the types made by A. FENN for my collection and research if anyone has any? The new copies are fairly true duplicates of the originals which faded out as they were not as good as the Duffus types I think that a look here would bring you what you need http://www.amazon.co.uk/Barrel-Mole-Trap-New-Design/ -
