  1. Hi I have one brindle boy whippet pup left from my bitches litter of 5. Own both parents and work and race both (do very well at both). Pup has had first set of jabs and will be ready to go at 10 weeks (19th Nov). Asking £325, is a quality pup from good stock. Let me know if you are interested. Dan
  2. Most importantly, recall, getting recall fixed early on will stand you in good stead for the rest of its life. And once its got sit teach 'wait' - essential too atb with it
  3. Hi, My bitch has just had a litter of 6 pups - they are pure whippet - no other blood in them, but if you're just after something to run on the bunnies then you couldn't do much better, I own both the sire and the dam and they're both quick, clever and game. The Sire is 22'' tts, Dam 21.5'' so pups should be a decent size. PM me if you're interested. Don't want a lot for them. Dan
  4. Sorry? is that too me? I have two whippets (I've posted about before on here) 11 months & 14 months Dan
  5. I know this question was asked before - but there wasn't a lot of actual info about the breed in the replies, for a relative newbie like me - so I thought I'd start it again in the hope I could get some, less contentious, opinions I'm thinking about getting a terrier to use to flush rabbits from cover to my whippets. As well as this the dog I would want would need to tick the following boxes 1) Be KC reg - yes I know many will sneer at this - and I understand all of the reasons why, however hunting with my dogs is hobby for ME. The misuses (and the kids) enjoy the showing (and fair /
  6. Got the day off tomorrow and hoping the nice weather holds. Planning to take the dogs out for a walk around and a bit of a mooch. Anyone fancy coming along for a a chat and to exercise the mutts? In Buckinghamshire (round Buckingham way) Let me know Dan
  7. Yes, the knuckles should pretty much vanish -you may see a small, fairly regular bump there (as opposed to the more pronounced and slightly uneven bumps of the growth plate) - which would be the joint end of the bone itself. But often they disappear completely. Growth in sighthound type dogs often isn't completely finished until around the 18 month mark, and you can get spurts up to about a year old. Usually after that (but not always)the growth rate really slows and you'd but lucky to see much more than an inch in height gained, but the dog will 'fill out' as muscle growth takes over.
  8. Hi, Sounds like you may have the wrong charger. I think these batteries use a jack (as opposed to spade type) connection to charge? It may be that the polarity of the charger does not match the polarity of the battery (look at the symbol on the charger and on the battery and see if they match - will be two horizontal lines opposite each other - one ending in a ball , the other in a C shape which goes around the ball at the end of the other line, with a + and - symbol above each - need to be same way around on the charger and the battery Or, the charger may be the wrong AMP rating for t
  9. Growth plates are the areas at the end of every bone from which, simply put, new bone grows outwards - allowing the bone to lengthen (its an area of specialised cartilage). Once growth has finished (i.e. the animal is an adult) the growth plates are replaced by normal solid bone. In some of the long bones (at the ends of the arms and legs i.e. wrists and ankles) the growth plates can be quite visible - such as the 'knuckles' in whippets and some other running dogs. The size of the growth plate does not really give any clear indication of the size the dog might reach, but they can be a good
  10. I have spent bit of my life travelling across North Africa, and saw some of the guys out there working Azawakh dogs - a very lean, very hippy (i.e. raised back and pronounced hips) sighthound. They were bloody fast, very rugged, always seemed to have stamina to burn and had a huge prey drive. I always thought they would make a good lurcher (they hate the cold apparently so would have to be crossed with something with a bit of a coat I guess) and was wondering if anyone had heard / seen a lurcher with this breed in it working - how did it do and what else was in it? just out of interest rea
  11. Hi Do the batteries come with chargers? What do you want for the Striker Lamp, filter and 1 battery? (posted) ta Dan
  12. Alright mate, can I have a bit more details please. What model lightforce lance is it, and does it include a battery? cheers Dan
  13. Oh - should probably add for scale, the legs in the pictures are those of my 7 year old son - not mine
  14. Thanks, the dog is, the bitch is proving more difficult - she gets very very focused on them as the move around and its can be difficult to break that focus. Getting there though
  15. Lol ta mate - the collars were the missus choice - belive me, its the most I can do to stop her dressing them in cutesee outfits (I had to take a an elf costume out of her hands at christmas) *sigh*
  16. Just thought I'd share some pics my two (taken on a walk out today in the woods). They're coming on well - done a bit this season, but really just been working on obediance (recall etc) and fitness and getting to know how we all work together, they are my first workers after all. Really looking forward to some fun later in the year The white & Brindle dog is just under 21" tts and 29lbs - he's 14 months old and probably done with growing he's got much more muscle bulk than the bitch and uses his nose and head a bit more than she does The black bitch is just unde
  17. If blowing doesn't work what you can do Is Say 'Give' (or whatever you use) firmly. If the dog refuses hold its lower jaw, towards the back, and GENTLY use your thumb to push its lip/fleshy side of its mouth, down onto the top of its lower back teeth, this will usually make a dog release and is better than forcing its jaws apart. Once it has released praise and treat while saying the give command again. hope this helps Dan
  18. I saw this permission template on another site, I think the guy who originally put it up may come on here - if so you know who you are and thanks Dan Rabit hunting Letter of permission.doc
  19. Oh and sorry, a more inportant question. He won't chase anything like a ball, toy etc to retreive it....in fact he won't "play" with anything- if I get him bones etc he'll try to slink off with thm somewhere so I get him to bring them back to me in the house but outside he has to play chase with me, which involves a LOT of walking away quietly then calling him. Any ideas? or are whippets just not the tennis ball type? Thanks again Hi, I have two whippets myself -wonderful dogs. When young neither had much of a toy chase drive, I found the best way to get them interested in chasing was t

Hi, definitely interested, where in Bedfordshire are you mate (which Butchers?)
  21. Hi all, I have a couple of whippets (dog 13mths, bitch 10mths) and would like to start taking them out rabbit hunting / lamping. They are both keen, fast and pretty obedient (good recall, will give to hand etc). I'd like to start by taking them out with someone who has some some permissions, experience and uses experienced dogs so that both they and I can learn. If anybody in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire fancies taking an newbie and his dogs out one afternoon / evening drop me a line, thanks Dan
  22. Hi, I'm no expert but here's my tuppence - some of which I know other people have said already At two he is entering his 'hormonal' teenage years and is trying it on a bit. In the pic there is another dog, is that yours as well and is the staffie top dog out of those two? He is, at this age, trying to work his way up the pack hierarchy and as you are at the top you are the main target. What you need to do is consistently assert your authority. This doesn't mean whacking him every time he growls it means showing you are top dog. 1) At feeding times lift his bowl from its usual place,
  23. Hi, can you tell me a bit more about the gun, age, condition and what model it is (classic, competition etc) any photo's available? Thanks Dan
  24. HI, is this still for sale? if so could you send me a few pics? thanks Dan
