Ok, after much work in the forest, Im another year closer with my dogs. Im putting together some thoughts. Large type Stag x Catahoula Welsh Hound x GWP Bull x Deerhound x GWP Wheaten x GWP Bull x GWP x Grey Small type Terrier x Beagle Welsh hound x Spaniel harrier x beagle x airdale I like the way the pointer hunts, they add a certain edge to a cross, they have brains plenty and a bit of courage, so they are going to feature highly in my up coming planned matings. The way its going, I may have a large, and a small, line of boar dogs, but thats several years down th

If your not german I';d eat my hat! I like all the breeds you mention mate, Esp the hanoverian. Not had the joy of seeing many weimeraners, the odd one hunting birds but never on bigger game, where Id imagine them to be better suited.
-
Huntaway are a good type, Ive had guys out here with teckels, and to be fair they had a good 2 days with us. We shot 2 and the little dogs got to bail up a feisty young boar, they did the job fine.
-
Great to hear that Micky, as Ive seen a few decent wirehairs, tough dogs with a decent nose for sure. And yeah, from what Ive seen, they LOVE boar!!
-
Nice work Sparks, and a handy bunch of hounds you run.

And what are the symptoms? In dogs. Cheers Tusker

Here in UK we have to follow the 'hunting with dogs act', which forbids catching all mammals expt rabbit/rats. Otherwise here there are no laws relating to boar, as they are a recent species. There are no seasons in place, but I always stick to a winter hunting season to give the boar freedom and security to raise young in peace.

Im sure you will be acting within the law to hunt them humanely with the help of dogs on permission.

They look great dogs to me, I would give one a chance, but have never seen any for sale? Well not from working stock anyway? They look tough dogs, and I reckon crossed to a bull/grey or similar large dog would be about the perfect catch dog. I would not use one without chest plates /rip collars. How is their nose? Do they make good hunters? And what weight is would the average wheaten make? Cheers Tusker -
What do you base your knowledge on mate? The wild boar in Spain are among the smallest Ive seen. And to answer your question, of course I work my dogs on big boar. We have taken several trophy boar, comparable to the pictured boar. Ive seen bigger.( That is a classic trophy picture with the dude sat well back to super impose the size of the animal!) You call UK boar PIGS what do you mean? That they are not big? Wrong mate, there have been many trophy specimens taken in the UK My management plan is always striving to keep the best stock on our land, we try to take out the smaller specimens

You sound like a fount of knowledge mate. And I mean that in the most sarcastically genuine way. Thing is mate, if a dog or more, gets within nipping distance of any boar/pig, especially a big one, the pig will 9/10 turn to face the music at some point. Then all a dog or dogs need to do is dance around it making a din. That pig aint going far. It may run again, but it will get stopped again. Now a strong dog on one of these beasts would deffo have to be well armoured, they can easily shred the biggest of dogs. In the UK we only use a catch dog if the boar is wounded from a bullet, or oth

Gotta say I like a good dogo but... , been to hunt with a few in Europe but were a waste of time in the field with about as much GO as a pomeranian!! However I would be just as happy with a good UK bred Bull/grey, if an allround pig catcher is what you need, they are pretty much ideal.] Tusker
-
Thats a rough n ready looking mutt mate, whats his breeding? Theres no reason why he couldnt work boar, are there many in Ireland, is that where your from? Tusker
-
Any more than 1 of them on a boar would be too many
-
Yes mate your spot on, I know of Neds dogs, and they look like they do their job very well. Hats off to him, and thousands of others who use heavy holders in Oz. I lived in Australia! If I thought that a large finder/holder was what I needed here, trust me I would keep them, but there are many factors that make this type of dog unsuitable for me, and in general in the UK. They are not totally useless, but certainly cant be used as they should be due to legislation I am a pro deer and boar manager, and have syndicate of guns that shoot boar over my areas. I keep trained dogs that flush
-
I may hold ya to that one day! Cheers mate
-
Thats not fact, thats fiction mate, Ive lived in Oz for years before moving out to UK. I can safely say that many many dogs are single handed boar stoppers, and a heck of a lot of them will go for the biggest pig they see in a sounder. Every boar wants to go ffs, so if your statement were remotely true we would never catch pigs!! Here in the UK I use many different types of dogs for legal boar hunting. Flushing boar to rifles, and tracking shot boar. I have terriers that absolutely love them, and will seek them out from dense sitka all day long. The German Jagd terriers are great boar hu

ANTI alert! What do you think of shooting fox or boar, or feral cats, or any other predator here in the UK??
-
You fellas over the pond have it good, I'd love to come visit your country one day
-
Shooting them on the move is the aim of the day mate. Due to UK laws we can use 2 dogs to flush them to guns to be shot. Then the dogs should be used to find the shot or wounded boar.
-
They look great, and Im sure with the rapidly growing number of people managing wild boar in the UK, there will be a steady demand for protective gear. Its a dangerous job tracking a wounded boar. We dont want the pig to suffer, but neither do we want our dogs injured in the process. So hopefully someone like Strong Stuff will provide us with the equipment we need to keep things as safe as possible!! All the best Tusker

i use solid rifled slugs in shotgun. Well never actually fired one.. Same for deer, even reds. I prefer keeping up with hounds with a good knife. Lot of protective dog gear available. Just the postage costs.. Ouch I have had a couple of chaps out here with the rifled slugs, very effective at dropping big game. I have found a good supplier of chest plates, cost is about pommy quid per dog. Quite a price, but its worth it for the dogs safety, especially when entering the young dogs.

Mate that sounds good. I have a dog here with a 16/18 inch neck. If you get something made up, give me a shout and we can swap details

They look smashing pups.
