Why are semi-autos frowned on?
swamp thang replied to gibspoon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Tradition aside, semi-autos can be tricky to un-jam, or so I hear, since I only use pump action fire-sticks. -
I noticed in my home that after rats have eaten poison and start to get sick, they go into a frenzy of nest-building - tearing up paper and stuffing it into hurried nests, in what seems like a last ditch attempt to breed before they die, I take it to be a hard-wired survival instinct that kicks in when the rat senses death is near. That being said though, what you are seeing could be simply an attempt to hide the bait for rainy-day storage, as others have mentioned here.

bottled scents and attracters / lure scents
swamp thang replied to 3175darren's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Pete Rickard's Indian Buck Lure works like magic to bring in monster bucks, and I have used it with astonishing success. Originally formulated over years ago by Pete Rickard, an old trapper and hunter, to attract American white-tail deer, I can attest that Indian Buck lure works on African bush buck with equally devastating efficiency. The first time I used Indian Buck Lure while deer-stalking here in Africa, I poured a liberal amount on my jungle camo clothing, in the hopes that it MIGHT work on the local bush buck deer. There I was standing and straining my ears when I heard a twi -
Fox Thumping with Martin and Foxdropper
swamp thang replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Good shooting, Yokel Matt. That phrase "haste in the presence of distinguished company" describes very well the mistakes that pile up when I try to play lead guitar while a more accomplished musician is listening. Deviating ever so slightly from the theme here, Martin, that avatar of yours renders me too cross-eyed to read your posts. There never will be a substitute for 100% naturals, as the picture illustrates.. -
I've always been partial to pump-action shotguns, and over the years learnt to work the action as fast as a semi-auto. My Winchester 1200 pump gun has served me well over the past 20 years, and is far easier to un-jam than a semi-auto.

Now THAT is the way to acquire food, as opposed to walking down the aisle of a supermarket with a trolley, then paying through the nose for pre-packaged meat that most likely is loaded with growth hormones and preservatives.

In this part of Africa all the big game was hunted to extinction generations ago, and the deer are so heavily hunted that about the only chance to see one is by spotlight, which is legal, as is just about everything else in the hunting and trapping realm, unfortunately for the animals. Anyways I circling back home after another unsuccessful night of spotlighting a few years back, when my path took me past a small jungle clearing that had been slashed and burnt by subsistence farmers during the previous day. Most of the embers had died out, but there were a few glowing remenants of the fire s

Not What I Expected To Find........!

Is that a ferret, a stoat or a weasel ? The only weasels I know are of the human variety, hence my question about this furry critter. -
How to make a ghillie suit for £20
swamp thang replied to 19powell90's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
For some reason that gilly-suit reminds me of what the village witch doctor of some remote amazon tribe might wear for a sacrificial ceremony around the fire on a moonlit night in a jungle clearing. I might just copy this idea some day. -
the parts within the kit are pretty self explanatory to be honest but one thing i will say,do not leave excess oil on the metal working parts, if the gun is stored upright the oil will leak onto the stock from the breech and over time the wood may swell and start to split as you will see on many second hand guns for sale Reading this warning about keeping guns upright has got me thinking I need to make a wall-mounted gun cabinet with horizontal racks.

Like Perthshire keeper suggests, Charlie will be back to the scene of that buffet dinner right away, and a few snares set up on his likely approaches will ensure that he remains there after dinner.

I played that sound clip with the volume very low, Night Hunter, and it was still blood curdling enough to set my dogs off howling outside.

Ha ha Oh yes.. Fear of the Arse-less Gilly suited critter is the beginning of wisdom. Furthermore, Ask not for whom the Arse-less Gilly Suit stalks, for it might be stalking thee.

Let us know if you ever find out for sure just what made that odd noise, DD. I wonder though, if some practical joker with a tape recorder and loud speaker could have made that racket to mess with your mind for some reason. I imagine that a recording of selected other-worldly sci-fi sound track snippets, amplified real loud at night, would do a good job of spooking the wildlife as well as whoever happened to be about at the time

please can I come and shoot you????
swamp thang replied to hollie.vincent87's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Whew. For a minute there, I was a bit worried over the title of your post. Ok then fellas, now we are clear this is about shooting pictures and not projectiles, is there anyone present who is up for being shot ? -
May I ask why it is important to be able to conceal a catapult ? I wouldn't have thought there were any restrictions on their use in the countryside.

I had no idea that spring loaded foot snares are illegal in the UK. I would have thought they would be ok since they really are a gentler way to hold an animal. Watched a Youtube video the other day of a man using his own arm to set off a Freemont snare, to demonstrate how light of a grip they apply, so it never really crossed my mind that such a device would be banned anywhere. Oh well, thanks for clearing the air on that, fellas. I imagine Mr.Fox will be glad for one less hazard to worry about in the UK.

An outfit located out in Iowa called the Snare Shop.com sells various trapping supplies, of which I bought two foot snares mainly out of curiousity. Both of these foot snares are shown on the same page of the following link to the Snare Shop's product listing, but in terms of design concept and trapping effectiveness, these two products are worlds apart. http://www.snareshop.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=49&category_id=369&vmcchk=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=2 The Freemont Foot-Snare is by far one of the most elegant t

great start to the night

That was a masterful shot, Sniper, finding its mark cleanly, even though it must have a been hurried shot necessary to bag him before he fled. -
Is this land big enough?
swamp thang replied to Dan_Mercian's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I tend to agree with the opinion expressed earlier here that a few dozen snares set around the perimeter of that land will harvest those cotton-tails way faster than any shooting is likely to, but with the added benefit of not having to be concerned about nearby houses or that road in the lower left of the picture. -
Show everyone one your Shotgun!
swamp thang replied to North Wales Hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'll put up some pictures of my pair of old Winchester 12 guage blunderbuses later, but for now I'll describe them. They are both 20-year vintage Model 1200 pumps, and lets just say I've got my money's worth out of them. The recoil pad of the smoothbore is held on with duct tape, and the sight rail with masking tape. The stock and forend woodwork are nicked and weather-beaten, but the bore is as shiny as new, and when the occasion calls for it I can loose off well aimed shots as fast as any autoloader. This one doubles as my home-defence weapon, so she bears an under-barrel tac-light whose m -
Wow, that is one fearsome set of chompers. Out here in the African boondocks, gin traps with interlocking spikes are in widespread use despite being totally illegal. I know an old geezer who stepped on one during a deer drive, and he was never the same after that.

live trap for squirrel
swamp thang replied to hullhunter's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
A tree-branch snare will catch squirrels every time, but you'll need to check them frequently if you plan on taking them alive. Back in the day, I made my squirrel tree snares with a foot-long section of very light snare wire, fashioned into a snare loop on BOTH ends. Loop the snare around the branch those critters run along, pass one snare loop through the other one, and pull tight to secure it to the branch. Your catch loop needs to be about an inch and a half in diameter, with a quarter inch gap between the lower curve of the loop and the branch surface. If, after fastening the snare -
Good story, Redeye. That fox will turn out to be the easiest ever to snare. Using free rabbit, his favourite treat so far, bait Charlie in towards an area with converging fox trails, and have your snares a good ten to twenty feet away from the bait, long before he slows his pace as he homes in on the aroma of free dinner, on account of his becoming wary over the lingering human scent around the bait. Ten such snares in a perimeter around the bait will guarantee a successful capture of the wily one, and twenty in a wider spread will likely nail any others attracted to the commotion of th
