  1. Like anything else, in the right hands they are a great dog, very loyal & protective. Same as with most things, the few idiots give everyone else a bad name.
  2. Really hope your pups OK Ethyl. Having owned 3 Akita's over the years i do like the breed BUT they are dog & people aggressive (to strangers) they also give no warning such as bark/growl before they attack. They are a serious guarding breed for experienced (& responsible) dog owners only, should never be let off lead EVER imo! Any dog surviving an Akita attack is lucky because they have incredibly strong jaws and have even been known to be used for fighting because of this. My second Akita dog had a fight with a GSD & Rotty. I had my dog on the lead and was taking him for a w
  3. Congratulations, look forward to pics
  4. Save your money mate, i have tried the DAP collar and the plug in for cars (air vent thingy) and it didn't work. Eventually the dog grew out of it but ginger biscuits worked the best at relieving most of it
  5. She's a cutie, made me go awwwwwwwwwwwwww Hope she does you proud, nice breeds in her.
  6. Mine is off greyXwhipp 23" to a 3/4 grey, 1/4 whip also 23" and mine has grown to..............23" She's actually more Grey than whip but i'm pleased with her size. Looks just like the other dogs pictured but for some reason it wont let me load a pic (plenty posted on other topics if you want to look for them).
  7. Had a nice day out, well done & thanks. Bumped into Trigger2 and had a nice chat, hope to see you again sometime mate, atb with your pup
  8. You can also rub some vinegar on the part she's fussing about, i know it don't smell great but it really takes the sting away (works on humans too). Allergic reactions happen pretty quick, a friends dog got stung on the neck by a wasp and was dead in her arms in under 4 minutes
  9. Can you not double her up with another dog for company. I know you bred her and she's always lived there but maybe the loss of her littermates has hit her hard and she feels very insecure. I've put a pup in with a calm older dog and it's worked, after a few weeks the pup has more confidence and can be left alone.
  10. Will see you all there, please say hello to the skinny girl wearing glasses and walking a black/white grew, it gets pretty lonely being billy no mates wondering around on my own (unless hubby suddenly decides to come along) Weather looks good so should be a fab day out. Safe journey everyone
  11. I got a greyhound collar from the pet shop, about £6 and dogs happy with it
  12. Never too late, he might not be the best but if has the instinct to chase he'll soon get the idea. Now i'm a complete novice but i've got my youngster (9 months & 1st lurcher) looking down the beam, was pretty easy with her. I know she'll chase rabbits daytime so i took her out with the lamp, found a squatter and keeping the beam on it i walked her forward on the slip, she looked everywhere except down the beam until we were pretty close and the bunny got up, the second it moved the dog clocked it and i slipped her, she gave chase. Since then she got the idea when i had the beam on a
  13. Fair price mate What area you in? atb finding good working homes.
  14. Would this Miller dog have been called "Mick the Miller"?
  15. As a kid i was mad about dogs and all things typical of boys interests, fishing, fixing things & finding out how things worked. I've never been without a dog since the age of 5 but got my own dog aged 12, i trained this little collie/heinz57 mutt to do loads of tricks and a high level of obedience and eventually ran out of ideas for her. I realised that a dog which had a role or job was far happier than a pet stuck at home. I then went into training security dogs & personal protection dogs and one of the GSD's i had was mad keen on rabbits where we patrolled nights. After weeks of her
  16. Look for your nearest Non-pedigree whippet racing and take him along 1/2hr before they start racing, they will give him a go or two for you on the lure. They will want to see him run single before anyone thinks of letting him race against another dog (for safety). There's no money involved but it's great fun. I take my WhippXgrey to Old Hall, she's 9 months now and we love it. They have to be 12 months old to compete properly in races but yours is the right age to start practising
  17. Thats what you think! I'm doing weights right now ready for the season to start, all those rabbits gonna weigh a lot and i've got to carry them all home
  18. .............well the season is fast approaching. Soon i will be taking 2 dogs too the shoots and 2 will have too stay in the kennel, I'm sure i've heard them shout 'prick' as i've loaded up the other dogs.... LMAO! Sad thing is my pet dogs shout 'Biiiiiiaaaaatch' at me when i take my lurcher out on her own but i'd be a laughing stock taking 2 chihuahuas and 2 poodles out rabbitting with us, think even my lurcher would die of shame
  19. Your right there Lab, having the other dogs has to keep you going, just because you are hurting, sick, heartbroken or whatever, you still have to go take care of them and see to thier needs. One of the reasons i'm not a single dog owner. They give you a reason to get off your backside every day. If i had just 1 and something happened to it then my life would be empty. No matter how down you may feel the greeting from a dog who worships you will lift the lowest soul
  20. Look i'm just asking. I work dogs, not running dogs but if i lost 1 of my dogs tomorrow it wouldn't hurt any less thanif you lost yours. But i wouldn't pack in as i have other dogs to think about. I wasn't having a go about your question. I don't know the guy, if he has other dogs or what the score is, i was just trying to think why this one hit him so hard if he has others but is thinking of packing in. I have other dogs (pets) and have lost 3 in the last 2 years to old age, each one hurts like hell and they are deeply missed but i do have a 'special dog' and would be even more
  21. Free running whilst playing doesnt quite put the same stresses on joints as it does when they are chasing quarry. Still a good idea not to let her completely exhaust herself when young, use your own judgement about how long and hard she has run and if needs be put her on the lead. Also be careful she doesn't run into your other dog as a collision at speed can injure quite badly.
  22. Maybe this dog was "the special one" that sometimes comes along and worms into your heart. If he still has other dogs he may still be too sore over losing his favourite to think about going on, or even just worried it might happen to another of his dogs. Plenty of reasons to still lose heart over running dogs.
