One discussion about wormers http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/topic/68664.html Will have a look for more but the ones i know about are mainly on Facebook. From reading through that discussion it states Collies/herding breeds should not be given Milbemax as there is a substance in it which they can react badly to, i would play it safe and not give it to any lurchers with collie in them

Be careful with Panacur, i did a lot of research after losing 2 pups after worming with the 10% liquid. It's very harsh on the dogs intestines and there's info on the net where hundreds of people have posted about thier dogs getting very ill or dying after using it, of course the vet & manufacturers deny this

My pup (whipXgrey) is 5 months old, walks well on the lead, recalls, retrieves & sits on command. But she shows no interest at all in rabbits. This mornings walk and there were some rabbits around which my pup didn't even look at as they hopped across the path in front of us. I threw the ball for her and she spooked a rabbit which ran in front of her just 20ft away yet she didn't even glance at it, just fetched the ball and came back looking pleased with herself. This has happened a few times while out on a walk. I know she's young and i wont be starting her til next season but i would a

Mine in my avatar is just 5 months old now & 20" tts (whip/grey X whip/grey) both her parents were 23" so i'd like her to make that but to be honest size doesn't bother me as she's cracking right now

You guys ever had trouble with horses this time of year
Shazza replied to Storm da bull's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Horses are foaling around now so they are a little more temperamental than normal. Saying this, a lot of horses will & do attack dogs, putting a horse in a field stops it running away so when a predator (dog) shows up they will go into attack mode instead. I would never walk through a horse paddock with a dog, even on lead. The stables where i kept my horse had a sign at exit/entrance of the public footpath warning people to keep dogs on short leads & walk along the hedgerow, they have attacked at least 2 dogs with thier owners (people not hurt but dogs scared off or kicked) in the las -
Thanks for the link, thats the first time i've heard of a case where the dog hasn't been returned, essentially it's "stolen goods" So everthing i was told by the vet and chipping company i trained with is rubbish! The Police were wrong to return the collie to it's owner and obviously decent law abiding citizens get the raw deal yet again. If it becomes law to have all dogs chipped then it should also be law that who they are registered too is the legal owner. It's not rocket science that if it's registered to someone else then it's either lost or stolen and the law should step in to

My friend works at the rescue and got the whole story straight off her. As for why this whole topic has been dragged off course Most owners get thier pets chipped or tattoo'd to give themselves every chance of being reunited with thier dog should the worse happen. Maybe we should forget doing any of that and just go get a new dog if it gets lost, seems most people here aren't that bothered about thier dogs to spend a few quid that may get them back home, says how good thier dog is if it means so little to them .

Do it your self vet...how much do you risk doing?
Shazza replied to wuyang's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Jabs were most likely painkiller + AB's. If you did loads of research & feel confident enough to know when your dog needs a vet or not & your own capabilities then go for it. I certainly dont race off to the vets for anything minor but i do know when a vet is needed and take the dog straight away. -
No it's not a legal requirement yet, but they sure looked like a bunch of muppets when they have a scanner and don't bother to use it If the proposal to have all dogs microchipped is passed then it will be law to check them. It still goes though that a dog who was bought & paid for from the rescue was removed by the Police and given back to it's original owner when the chip proved it was his dog. So how can you say it doesn't prove ownership? Possesion of the dog was not proof of ownership here, the chip was

Microchips are NOT proof of ownership. The provide a method of identification, nothing more. So the Police broke the law then when they removed a border collie from it's owners when someone else claimed the dog was thiers A family adopted a BC from a rescue centre locally and it hadn't been scanned before it was adopted out, owner who had lost the dog just happened to see it in the park and called the Police, they took the dog to a vet who confirmed the chip details and the dog was returned to the original owner. The rescue centre also got a visit and a warning to scan every dog

Don't know or care what the RSPCA think. The dogs trust & Kennel Club are the main ones i heard are backing it along with many local councils.

I know vets don't check for chips or tatts and that is bad, if you asked them to chip a dog though then they have to scan it first to make sure it hasn't already got one. Various dog charities and organisations are pushing for all dogs to be identifiable by law, if this happens then vets would have to scan any dog when it's registered with them for it's first visit or vaccination. They want all breeders to be responsible for having pups chipped before they go to thier new homes whether they are pedigree, crosses or accidents. It's one way of cutting down on the strays filling the shelters
-
It's their property anyhow if they have the dog Have you got dogs? If you have and you think micro chips wont get your dog stolen, leave the kennel open and post your address on here.... I'll bet you don't get them back!!! I have dogs and had one stolen in a burglary 12 years ago, at the time i had them all tattoo'd but they took the pup on the day he was being tattoo'd so it hadn't been done. I had the Police there when a bunch of lads stood outside with my pup on a lead, the Police went outside to speak to them but then told me as they had the dog and i had no proof it was mine the

Can't remember who posted on page 2 about micro-chips not proving ownership THEY DO mate Same as Tattoo's prove ownership. If you want a dog micro-chipped or tattoo'd the dog has to be checked over first to make sure it hasn't already been marked/chipped (and possibly with an owner looking for it). If no chip or tatt then you can get it done in a matter of minutes, in case you haven't realised yet IF THE ANIMAL ISN'T ALREADY AND THE THIEF GETS IT DONE AND REGISTERED TO HIM/HER THEN IT BECOMES THIER PROPERTY
-
I micro-chip at dog shows mate, do all sorts of dogs but never any lurchers, don't need to advertise because they come to me I was asking because of all the threads on lost & stolen dogs but never a mention of the dog being micro-chipped or tattoo'd and apart from the dog that went to the guys moms none of the others have been found

JP 22 quid is expensive (but still worth it. I charge 15 for a single dog, 12 for 3 or more done at the same time. That includes the owner registration

Think of a hand held vice, they insert the letters & numbers into the little vice, each digit is made up a dozen or more needles. They then crimp the whole thing through the dogs ear (needles dont go all the way through) the antiseptic dye is then sponged over the inside of the dogs ear and must be kept dry for 48 hours so the dye gets into all the pin holes and when wiped off the tattoo'd details are visible. Have seen 8 dogs tattoo'd and they all screamed like f**k (1 adult, rest puppies) they soon forgot about it but it was worse imo than micro-chipping.
-
Had dogs tattoo'd in the past for security work as identification had to be visible for the licence but even these can be altered and they are often hard to read (especially on long or rough-coated doogs or those with small ears) Saying that, if you have them chipped & tattoo'd then someone would have to really want your dog to alter/remove two things linking the dog to you
-
Considering how many dogs have been stolen or lost and so few have been found i was wondering why so many of these dogs are not micro-chipped. (not having a go at anyone who has had a dog nicked ) Chipping gives a far greater chance of getting your dog back if lost and also proves ownership if they were stolen. From experience a few years ago, the Police will not even be interested if the dog hasn't got permanent identification to prove ownership even if you tell them where it is, possesion is 9/10ths of the law I am qualified to micro-chip and do a lot of dogs but i've never been ask

One issue with this option is the long list of possible unwanted side effects: Infertility X Liver damage Vaginal infections X Urinary accidents in the house Body odor Skin problems Mounting other dogs Behavioral changes Uterus infection X Mammary gland cancer and/or enlargement Weight gain Skin and coat changes Apart from those marked, all these issues can affect speyed bitches anyway so i wouldn't be overly concerned about the others listed. It may be a good option to consider mate as you can always have it removed if it causes problems or you decide to try for a litter
-
Vasectomy would prevent the puppies but not the hassle when the bitch is in season. Believe me they will drive you nuts and will only have thier mind on one thing (especially the male)

yeah mate, rabbit pelt will be perfect for retrieving
