  2. What's the best deal you have had on an air rifle? Last summer the man along the street gave me a shout as I took the dogs for their morning walk.He told me about an air rifle that was for sale on the notice board at his work.He was a bit vague about what make it was but said if I was interested he would get the gun off the bloke for me to have a look at,I agreed. The following morning Billy gave me a shout again he had the gun,it turned out to be an Air Arms S410K and 3-9x50 tasco scope, both in great nik, also included was the gunbag,Hills stirrup pump and 3 tins of Accupell.I bo

" Alec, Alec, Alec, Alec, Alec, Alec, Alec,Alec,Alec, and ..... eh ...Alec. "Doesn't that get confusing?" "Naw.." says the girl. 4. "QUOTE HOUNDBLAIR" My mate has an ex racing greyhound what mite be coimng out ferreting with us to catch any bolters, i was just wondering if it will take to it as its never been out before? Just the thought of it makes me cringe,if I was one of the ferrets i'd be afraid, very afraid. It's not the size that will hinder the greyhound [i've seen plenty of big dogs 25" plus excell at ferreting]it's the fact that it has never done it before. I would expect the worst which could be a dead ferret and a badly injured dog,ask yourself is it worth it?

    Fox

    Never a truer word spoken
  7. I would never start a dog untill it was at least 9 months at the earliest, usually the dog will let you know when it's ready. I like the dog's obedience training to be at a decent standard before I start working them,if that's at 12 months 13 months or 14 months so be it,I've seen too many lurchers wasted by starting them too young. When you take into account all the things that can go wrong you realise it's worth waiting for a few extra months. All the best with the pup Mars.

    Fox

Impossible to answer that lurchers2006 as it depends on the individual dog. Some of them never take to foxes.
  9. Thought I'd ask how much a rabbit is worth in different parts of the country. Here in SW Scotland prices are pretty poor. I get 75p at the game dealers for clean gutted rabbits. At the butchers they pay £1.25 for them dressed.[gutted and skinned]
  10. Keep training him with the different dummies mate,i'm sure you'll get there. But first try taking him out by himself,no other dogs or people. If it's your mates permission i'm sure he'll help you out, there's a good chance the dog will retrieve his catch if there are no distractions. The way it works is your dog has just caught a rabbit, which is his prize for a good course, now if he's used to bringing his dummies back to you it should be a formality. But,and it's a big but your dog knows that the other dog is somewhere near you back there in the darkness and doesn't want to risk th
  11. I would be everything in life that I ever wanted to be, if I could be half as what my little boy thinks I am. The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life. 12. In my opinion she's still a bit young, let her have her puppyhood and you will reap the benifits in future years,i've seen too many lurchers wasted by entering them too young. Better to spend time with obedience training for the time being then during the summer when she's a bit older take her out for a mooch in the evenings when there's a good chance of getting a chase on some young rabbits.
  13. After reading your reply above mickdog I would say you are in a better position than lurchers2006, at least your dog is carrying the rabbit about a bit. Mickdog what was he like at retrieving dummies?

  15. "Quote-lurchers2006" 1..what age is the dog? 14 months 2..is it just you and him when your out? Normally another person 3..how good was he at retrieving dummies? ok not too bad, 4..how many rabbits has he caught? Over a 100 5..what does he do when he catches the rabbit? He holds it for a minute, then leaves it there and comes back?? Sorry for jumping your thread again Mickdog, At 14 months he's still young so I reckon you've got a good chance that you will be able to get him to retrieve, but you will definatley have to go back to basics. And that for me means no more live g
  16. Up here in Scotland any tall rough or broken coated dogs bred off greyhounds and deerhounds were always referred to as staghounds.
  17. Mickdog you need to give us more information. 1..what age is the dog? 2..is it just you and him when your out? 3..how good was he at retrieving dummies? 4..how many rabbits has he caught? 5..what does he do when he catches the rabbit?
  18. Training can start at a young age,but I try to incorporate it into play sessions and keep the lessons short the worst thing you can do with a young dog is to overtrain it this will make it stale and unresponsive. It's better to do 10 minutes once a day all week than 2 x 30 minute sessions at the weekend "Quote"I dont belive telling the dog to, sit, stay, go their, do this. I prefer a dog, to use its head, learn from experinces and to work out differemt situations for it self. Frank. Each to their own Frank but i've yet to see a well trained lurcher that can't think f
  19. Just the thought of eating fox would be enough to make me feel queasy
  20. Yes I suffer the same way but find it worse in the summer when I get home about 2am after fishing for sea trout,it's usually daylight before I drop off.
