  1. ok mate whatever you reckon. so how do you explain the fact that grass and dirt get caught in there after a bit run and he natually wears them out? i never cut them. Does this sound like he never uses them?
  2. my dog with dew claws sometimes uses them to grip the ground when he turns or and slides backward he digs them in to get grip. My other dog without dew claws doesn't have any problems turning either even though he has none. They have a different running style though. I don't think they are necessary but some dogs can probably use them to a certain extent for gripping. Best to be on the safe side though if it is going to be a problem.
  3. One of my whippets has his dew claws and has never had any problems. I don't have an aweful lot of experience with running dogs. I have two whippets. One with and one without and these are my first running dogs that i have owned.
  4. Nice looking dogs. I can't see why they wouldn't work. I've got two shorthaired whippets that are show bred and it sure doesn't stop them working. I suppose whippets haven't been shown long enough to breed out their hunting instinct. They have a strong prey drive and willingness to catch and kill any small moving creature. If you have a look on this page they do look like whippets to me http://home.ica.net/~westwood/breedersforum.htm as some in the litter turned out smooth and they are exactly like a smooth whippet in looks. Interesting.
  5. wb Frank still waiting for those pics
  6. I was thinking a whippet/kelpie would make a good rabbit dog. Especially if you chose a more lightly built kelpie. Kelpie are very good at stalking things so i would say it would make quite a cunning hunter. Probably good for feather as well.
  7. awesome pics. you have to love the way they crash and then get up like nothing happened ready for more action. Determined little guys. I'm always holding my breath when my two run around just missing trees etc in our back yard. I'm just standing there praying they wont end up hitting something.
  8. lol If you didn't already get the message coyote there is no photo. Try again.
  9. My dogs had it, it wasn't the most pleasant experience particularly when they are in the house coughing all night. Its a nasty rasping type cough as well. The vet said not to give them cough medicine as this can slow their recovery by not letting them clear their lungs as well. He just gave me some antibiotics which initially helped alot but after i stopped giving them the antibiotics the cough came back and took about a week for it to clear up. The still seemed active with the cough and would still run around even if they ended up coughing though i tried to restrict their activities. The ant
  10. Nice one bigdan, wonderful animals they are. I have two myself, my first running dogs they are. From my little experience thus far they are excellent for rabbits and are a natural rabbitting on the lamp. Mine picked it up from day one. I'm hoping they will bag some hares in the future given a bit more maturity. Haven't done any ratting with them yet. They don't tend to be big eaters. I feed mine twice a day as much as they want. They don't seem to overeat.
  11. i am thinking of putting one of my whippet dogs over a saluki for a hare and rabbiting dog, just an idea at this stage. I like the idea of a smaller dog with enough speed and stamina to take both hares and rabbits.
  12. Nice one Frank, glad to see she is coming along nicely.
  13. lol i can see Frank dreaming about those long ears
  14. yeah the cattle dog done that to my grandmother's silky terrier, grabbed it around the neck but the terrier asked for it really the snappy little thing.
  15. my younger whippet dog seems to be getting possessive about certain things and is showing a little agression towards the older whippet. He only does it with rabbits, bones or his favourite toy. They can eat out of the same bowl without any troubles but when it comes to his "precious" its a different story. Its especially problematic when a rabbit is involved. Last night i gave them a rabbit skin to play with and when he saw the older one with it got ran at him growling an had a snap it him. The other whippet is very gentle and unconfrontational but he will defend the odd bone. He looked qutie
