Whins exploits on land, sea, home and abroad
keepitcovert replied to baw's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Its quite obvious whin knows the game, what i dislike is the arse kissing fan club that follow him on this site like a bunch of groupies get a life FFS. -
A few years ago a mate of mine was given a dog a little whipgrey x collie bitch, by the time it was 7 months old it had changed hands four times, now he took the dog on somewhat reluctantly as he had just hit the 70 mark and always said it was unfair to take a dog on that might outlive him, shows the kind of dogman he is, The first time i saw the dog it was a nervy little thing that flinched if you went to stroke it he had been told it had no prey drive was going to be a jacker, how the hell you can tell at that age is beyond me. Any way to cut a long story short within a year that dog was a c

Has pet insurance become a double edged sword, a lot of people ive spoken too lately that have taken their dogs to the vet for various ailments seem to be under the impression that vets are carrying out operations that may be unjustified, the first question they ask is regarding your dogs insurance, now has it become another tool in the more unscrupoulous vets armoury to be carrying out unnecessary operations purely for money, by scamming insurance companys. Ive had my share of experiences with somewhat dodgy vets, and know how hard it is to find a good one that you can trust. Whats your take

Can see a lot of terrier in those whippets, also is that where the term flapping track comes from. -
I get concerned after 5 minutes, in my area a lot of travellers appear overnight and when you see their caravans and know your dog is in the vicinity it sets the old pulse racing.

One with drive and determination but with the brains to recognise danger no rabbit is worth the death of a dog. YIS KIC

No doubt about it the internet is creating false legends in both dogs and lurchermen, self promotion is certainly on the increase soon the net will be like the beer tent at lurcher shows.

Whippet grey dash of collie my view ,but for christs sake get it wormed. ATB. -
Quite often a thread appears asking which type of cross is faster, but the style of running is very rarely mentioned ive often been told a certain dog is very fast, and when ive seen it run it appears to be very quick, some short coupled dogs look like their going ten to the dozen, but when ran against a long backed dog that has a greater stride the difference can be staggering, best example i saw was a deerhound cross about 28 tts lamping rabbits and it made it look like childs play, also the way it ran didnt appear to be that fast but it obviously was. Now my own dogs also alter their running

Whippet breeding, will a racer make a good worker
keepitcovert replied to jimmy.jim86's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Had a beddy whippet from sam the man lines prey drive was fantastic 22ins 38lbs, sadly killed in 2007 she would tackle anything. Did you get your dog from the south elmsall area been trying to contact the guy who bred mine. ATB KIC -
Had mine for 5 years now best rabbiting dog ive owned lightning take off and great strike 1500 rabbits to date, cross id reccomend work rate is better than the pure whippets ive had and can take the cold and wet. Surprised there arent more around.

Mines been pretty good gained some more permission, but best of all had an injury free season, regards KIC.

Lurcher bitch ive got had pre season swelling of her teats which turned into quite hard lumps on two of them. Took her to the vets and was told they were mammary tumours and the cost of an operation would be £500, so decided to get a second opinion, took her to another vet and was told it was just pre season swelling, anyway course of tablets and within a week she was all clear, but the vet advised me to think about having her spayed to reduce the risk of cancer in the future, so was wondering have any of you guys experienced this with any of your dogs and if so what was the outcome. YIS KIC.

Great programmes in the days when you didnt have to be a raving anti or a celebrity chef to present country based programmes, you could do them purely on the basis that you enjoyed hunting. How times have changed.

Spitting image of my saluki whippet novice or not youve got the right attitude always pleased to see a dog go to a good home. Good luck with her looks like a useful dog in the making, im sure someone on here will live close enough to you to show you the ropes. ATB KIC. -
Look like englands oldest horserace could be axed, kiplingcoates derby ran every year since 1519 is now under threat, reason is yes youve guessed it, health and safety issues, liability insurance, new road signs, stewards, ect. Is this country getting so wimpish that any form of risk has to be stopped,i dont think that the HSE or anti enjoyment police will be happy until they have eroded all our heritage in sports or pastimes and we live in a boring sterile risk free society.

what would you guys put to a pure saluki bitch

Good advice in my book ive got one turns on a sixpence useful daytime ferreting dog aswell. -
Good insight into the thinking of the british generals to send a cavalry charge against machine guns no wonder casualty nunbers were so horrific.

The KC has done more damage to certain breeds of dogs with their ridicolous breed standards all in the name of fashion than anything else. KC tags and papers only inflate the stupid prices being asked for dogs now.Now we have silly prices for even sillier dogs eg jackapoos, ect. Thank god for the lurcher bred to run and for health. I notice some of the working whippet lads seem very keen to hang onto the KC tag has greed taken over from common sense, in my view the KC should have been disbanded years ago.YIS KIC

Lately you see various unlikely crosses advertised usually in CMW ie poodle crosses ect has anyone on here actually any experience of working a cross which differs from the norm, and more to the point would anyone admit to owning one. Reason i ask is many years ago a good shooting friend of mine used to bring his wifes little poodle along when we did a spot of rough shooting mainly to keep the peace on the domestic front, and surprisingly it turned out to be a great little bushing dog. Now with the current trend to slate anything that isnt from the standard type of cross, i must admit to keepi

I am a member of a shoot and i also run lurchers, but i find hare drives abhorrent, to say you need to be a good shot to kill driven hares is a joke any numpty can do it, a high fast pheasant is a different matter. The idea that it was all done in the name of charity seems to me to be a bit of a let out clause, why not just donate. Ive been invited on these sportless massacres and as a shot who prides myself on sporting values would certainly never attend.
