  3. Precisely ! says it all really and that's with two dogs . Yeah with proper law not carrying the dog upto the hare and dropping it on top of it they'll catch hares and some would be better than others but it's obvious they are not hare dogs per say it doesn't really have to be pointed out. f**k me ! don't get your knickers in a twist girlie ! Sorry mate didn't realise you were so sensitive
  4. this has nothing to do with terry turkington  it's alot more interesting than talking about one blokes opinion that seems to be based on urban myths. That's the thing with books articles etc it's just one opinion Plummer said Salukis were shite and collie crosses were the business what happened everybody got collie crosses. Lloyd worked cattle dogs and wrote about them and they became popular don't see many advertised now it's all whippets and saluki saturated a few years ago bull crosses were the rage You only have to read through different forums to realise there's a hel

  7. I asked a guy who ran his whippet with the East of England how many were caught (hares) in a season? He reckoned around about ten but of course that's under rules with proper law. Everyone was in it for the sport and to test and compare dogs.

  9. Just looked it up female ligers Tigons are fertile but males aren't so females can be bred back to pure tiger or lion is this the same with canaries ?
  10. Don't know much abut birds but always thought that canary crosses were called mules.
  11. just out of interest i just found this .. concept of hybrid vigor assumes that a crossbred animal (and this term is most often used in discussing dogs) will be healthier than a purebred. In reality, this is often false. In order to be a hybrid, an animal must be the product of two different species: donkey and a horse, offspring is a mule; lion (m) and a tiger (f), offspring is a liger; tiger (m) and lion (f), offspring is a tigon; wolf and domestic dog, offspring is called a wolf hybrid. Remember high school Biology, animal classification: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, an
  12. Nice to see peoples whippets I quite like the fawn and white bitch myself I suppose it's all down to personal preference.
  13. Here's an idea why not go to a whippet from coursing lines?? They're still about with generations of best to best matings behind their breeding probably be ideal pre ban.
  14. I use whippets nice looking Beddy by the way
  15. Some dogs carry weight differently to others. I've got four whippets one only has to look at food and she puts on weight, two I'd say are well built and one has a tendancy to look skinny he gets the most food but seems to regulate his own weight by sometimes refusing meals. They all benefit from rest and are out twice a day most days but when due to work I have to reduce their walks they seem to me to fill out that bit more trouble is the skinniest one seems to eat less if walked less I just accept his ways now the other three eat for England whatever. fatty meat like Chicken wings, lamb
  16. I was talking to a chap recently who had a top hare coursing dog whippet (under rules) he said they never caught that many throughout the season it wasn't about catching it was all about the sport (proper law not throwing your dog on top of a squatting hair) for sport a whippet and a hare are well matched and the hare with law will test the whippet to the full. For catching they're better on rabbits as said but they will and did catch (pre ban) hares. I'm not too sure about Sooty sam himself but this particular dog did have some sooty sam in it's ped.
  17. Yeah my whippet bitch is always mounting her son she doesn't do it to any other dog but she's always done it to him I think it's dominance thing.
  18. This ones a jack cross non ped whippet (the non ped had grey in it as well JBs Blackie) Mated to coursing bred whippet (Banatay) SHOULD make decent dogs.
  19. This one was rescued as a saluki whippet from another site not mine.
  20. My MALE WHIPPETS only get horny when there's a bitch in season. Kaspa who's proven only when they're ready to recieve Batty unproven does tend to extend his interest before and after but soon settles down again. I think in an unproven dog sometimes the urge to prove himself can become overwhelming sounds like that's whats happening with yours. If mine had excess energy like that I'd take it out on it's own around areas where rabbits are daytime get him focused whippets usually don't need much encouragement to enter
  21. I've always found the main problem with whippets is holding them back they're raring to go almost from day 1. Sensible to get her basic training sorted everyone's different in how and when same as every dogs different. There's no rush that's for sure but in my experience they have a lot of hunting instinct and entering isn't a problem. All the best with her look forward to hearing about her progress
  22. He looks like he may have another inch or two in him to me he'll definately fill out he looks shapely enough to me all the best with him keep us posted
  23. If youre thinking of a wild canine to put into a hypothetical lurcher much better with a Dingo I reckon. The Aussie's have used it to good effect in quite a few herding types which in turn have been bred to produce lurchers. One thing about wolves they'd throw good feet and stamina I reckon. I remember watching a programme about a small wolf pack in the high artic about 3 or 4 individuals and the lead male was 14 and still catching artic hares not many dogs have genes that make them that tough Selective breeding had weeded out anything inferior so that the wolf could survive in this harsh
