  1. one of my working jills is very playful but works fine, putting on collars is awkward and an extra pair of hands to hold the ferret will defo help!the more you go and questions you ask the better your experiences will be in terms of enjoying being out with your ferrets and catches, read as much as poss(books and internet)and ask questions wherever poss(on here and your parents neighbour for eg)and you should get on fine...
  2. longnetter, agouti and terrierjohn will be mentioned a lot i predict!!
  3. i don't personally but it is done by some, most advice your about to get is don't because your ferret can and will get hurt, quite badly in some cases.
  4. practise makes perfect, keep going and working the smaller setts until they are experienced or you are working more than one ferret to stop them getting the run around as much, and putting on the collar is something you will get to used to they have thick fur so you have to put it on pretty tight(i do it up then try to turn it,it should be hard to move, and give it one little pull forwards and it should stay in place, missing bolt holes is something we all do!and the cuts and scratches are a welcome pain when you are bagging up!!
  5. nice bit of varied ferreting there, the wheelbarrow is different!
  6. lost one of mine for a couple of nights last weekend(from the hutch though not out in the field)so i know the worry etc you felt,it's not good but at least she's back in the warm now!!
  7. I'm not as fortunate as you down here in South Wales with numbers Ian, if I make too much of a dent now I will have very low numbers next season...... I understand what you're saying though. i know what you mean if we go at them too hard there seem to be noticably less next time round so we just take half a dozen or so each trip then leave ourselves something to hunt in the future, everywhere has different populations to deal with i suppose...

    eggs

will have to try boiled, that never occured to me to try it!
  9. like someone said go and show them you've caught a few and explain that next year you'll have longer to organise and make a better go of it,try to get out as much as poss and enjoy it while there is still some(although probably not much!)of the season left, and at least you have been offered somewhere to go.
  10. time out in the field and rabbits in the bag that's what it's all about, and trying different recipes,it's all good...
  11. as long as they're not too young(i'd say 8/9 months or more)and if they are ok to handle then you can start straight away, good luck with them and enjoy your ferreting!

    eggs

mine get an egg each every few days, just broke into a bowl for them to lap at,and a whole rabbit should last 2 or 3 ferrets a few days.

  18. is the scruffy haired one that looks like it's pointing a beddy whippet?
  19. 3 or 4,if you use 2 or more the chances of a kill increase slightly but personally i expect to dig when i ferret anyway,it's better when i don't but i consider it part and parcel...
  20. good stuff and the dogs are handsome,18 is a good bag for the freezer!
  21. a friend of a friend took his nine month old jill out for the first time in the week and she bolted a few and was on their arse each time,my working hob was put to shame a bit!so being handled/spoilt by the kids doesn't seem to affect their working ability!
  22. rang a local vet last night they do it for £35!!
