  1. that's a fair point, they could be in/out anytime,so it's up to you,i think the earlier the better and stay til you can.
  2. six in two hours is a fair return,i'd settle for that each time i went out!
  3. nice to see youngsters gettin in to our sport,i started at about nine and will carry on til i'm not able, nice to see you are preparing and eating a much underated meat aswell, good luck and enjoy!
  4. never found one but it's well worth a go,if you can't tame it could you not release it much further out.
  5. the few places i go have been as good as before,no mixy and nice clean rabbits, although an average day is about 6 cus we like to leave some for later...
  6. we got moved on from some council land by the police today,a guy i was with did have verbal permission from someone who used to rent it,but as he no longer rents it you need written permission from the council otherwise you shouldn't be there,we are going to make some phonecalls but aren't expecting much joy...
  7. i thought they were pretty obvious to spot,i have never come across one fortunatly.
  8. it's a shame, but a risk you take without a locator, hopefully you find her safe and well, you say it's only a ferret but you get attached your not the only one, trust me mine are precious to me as i'm sure a lot on here will understand!!
  9. good suggestion, would save a bit of time i think
  10. give them a good clean, plenty of water and food, you'll soon know if they are ok,if they are seem lively/curious etc then most likely are fine, are you new to keeping ferrets?if so you won't go far wrong asking for advice on here or perhaps get a book so it's to hand.
  11. it's alright for some!but good luck with it
  12. use one with a fibreglass shaft, tough as anything and about a tenner,a mate had a metal shafted grafter which was cut shorter and welded that was probably the best i've ever used, you've broke a few?you must give them some abuse!!
  13. i thought these grew between the flesh and skin,if they are in the flesh how many times have we cooked and ate rabbit without even knowing?i know they are harmless after cooking but just wondered...
  14. what a coincidence!i just picked up two from a friend that i felt weren't bein looked after good enough, one is the sister to my hob(albino)and looks yellow,i assume from living in a dirty hutch, the other is poley looking so isn't easy to tell how dirty she is,i will keep them away from my other three til i can feed/clean them etc,til i'm confident they are ok,just incase, you say yours is showing staining around the eyes,i'd clean her and keep a close eye on her for a day or two,if she seems ill get her looked at they get worse very quickly, and there was a heated debate on here recently when so
  15. i have one hob and one jill which i work,i use them alternatly so they get a rest between setts,i have a young hob i'll be starting next season,,jills are quicker, hobs are stronger so i get the best mix i think...
  16. a jill of mine escaped about 18 months ago and unfortunatly i think they don't get too far, with foxes/cats even birds of prey, and probably wouldn't find enough food,so that's why i think we don't really ever come across any ferals, those that are found probably haven't been lost lost for long,i would like to know if anyone knows of them surviving for long though.
  17. darbo it's like your describing my mate?he uses the locator after about ten seconds and wants to dig if the ferret don't move from the same spot for more than about the same!you have to keep telling him to hold on a bit,but i suppose some people can't be patient,or like to dig!
  18. to avoid this situation i use a collar,i've never had to deal with a kill before without being able to locate the ferret so personally i can't help much, sorry!
  19. it will if the warren is fairly small,if it's big i seem to get mostly bolters, generally i use 1 ferret at a time.
  20. i work 2 ferrets and they both always wear collars, and my ferreting partner will bring 1 or 2 ferrets and always puts his collar on the one he's working,so basically i always use a locator, just in case, half of the time we don't use them but if you need to pinpoint your little pal for any reason...
  21. seems everyone is getting out but me...
  22. put up a post asking for ferrets, working would be best but not too likely(everyone will be using them now),let them know where you are and you should get a pair before long, have you considerd asking for a ferreting partner in your area who could teach you a few things, you have somewhere to go and they will have all the kit...
  23. it's not too hard to start up really,do you have nets and a spade?i would never take my ferrets out without collars on them, you could but risk learning a very harsh lesson if they kill,if you want to start working them straight away a year or older is best, last years kits will be too young i'd say,a ferret will basically know what to do but will get better/faster with experience so you will have put in the time/patience,and hobs don't need snipping, there will surely be someone on here who can help you get ferrets and nets, collars and finders will be more expensive(£100 or more i'd expect),goo
  24. i think crow/magpie is defo your culprit a fox would surely take the whole thing, maybe a bird of prey had a go? i try not to leave rabbits anywhere i can't see them because of the amount of little poachers hanging around, you could count yourself lucky they only took the eyes...
