how much time do you spend with the ferrets?
web22 replied to xHOUNDx's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I handle them twice on most days, morning and evening usually with a run round the garden when I check them over and randomly when I'm down the garden I handle them or let them out for a bit... -
I agree malt, most of us treat our ferrets as good as anyone treats their pet,we just work them as well as own, care for and adore them, anyone thinkin we still feed them bread and milk or any of that stereotypical rubbish would do well to read a thread concerning a ferrets welfare and see how strong a response it provokes in defence of them,I for one think its pretty obvious how much people who work their ferrets care and hate this kind of thing...

you seem to be fully determined to take this as far as possible and i really hope you do and get an acceptable outcome, what happened to that ferret is inexcusable and those responsible should be held accountable, get your solicitor on it,keep everything noted and don't rule out going to the press after it's dealt with... maybe the rspca will come in handy for once? all the best with this...

i was thinking about this earlier,i was wandering what others might do to help keep them cool so would perhaps be interesting to see?i too put the frozen water bottle in with them as well as a bowl of water and i spray them to cool them down every now and then, would be nice to hear from others to see what else i could be doing...

Hi all have been looking at different types of rifle ( just sort of window shopping ) and would like to check if I'm right on the different style barrels, is a bull barrel a solid, thicker than normal barrel to reduce vibration and a shroud basically a sleeve covering the barrel to assist noise reduction, neither with baffles or anything inside ? Also what advantage would/could these have, and what benefit does a fully floating barrel offer , Any information/description would help thanks all...

That's the pellet that killed the rabbit not an old one? That's quite some gouge on it,all the pellets I've ever found in the hutch have looked practically unused,I even found one a few months back in a rabbits side that my friend thought hadn't been used, though until recently I cut pellets out! Get much more given to me now the lads on here put me right...

Found a vid on YouTube called "rabbit hunting tips for gutting and skinning rabbits" thought I'd share it as it's pretty interesting and wondered how popular these techniques are,I used the gutting one after a lamping session two nights ago and it works very well so anyway hopefully you'll think it worth a watch...

i put a roof tile in for a bit every now and then to keep them down but when i've needed to cut them i put some butter on my hand or their belly to keep them still...

got on the golf course today as it's closed due to the snow so could get to the setts that are usually a no go,most areas are still covered in snow making it hard to find the holes but we had a bash and from 4/5 setts we bolted 7 but only bagged 2 (1 escaped a net),so the snow was a blessing for getting on to the actual course and a curse because it made it harder, the ferrets played up a bit as well sniffing and licking the snow around the holes which slowed things down a bit but hey ho it's rough with the smooth and got us out doin a bit... also bagged a magpie with my mate's gun... i go

in fairness i agree with the part about preserving our sport's future, there are a lot of people looking for ammunition to use against hunting of all types so we need to be careful where we tread so as not to break any rules/laws even if it is accidental... by the way i'm not taking sides or whatever, just agree with this point and that we are all responsible for keeping our reputation a good one,it only takes one bad act to cause us all to suffer in the future...

did similar myself this morning got out early and did 3 setts, bolted 6 or 7 but only netted 3 after i grabbed the wrong bag and didn't take enough nets with me but the ferrets worked well and i got some for the freezer and was home by 10 so worked out ok,i must start taking photo's to post it seems to make a post more interesting somehow...

looks like a fair bit of effort went into those rabbits with the dog's cut and the dig but i'm sure it was worth it,looked a good day out... hope the dog's ok by the way ...

anyone recommend a good gutting knife?
web22 replied to patterdalejoel's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
anything sharp? i have a winchester that's still going strong for gutting/skinning etc but i also use one from wsb tackle that cost about £3 just needs sharpening more often... should expect fleabay to be full of cheap fishing type knives... scrap fleabay just looked and these type knives can't be sold there anymore... -
i.c mathews of syston in leicester quoted me £39 if i remember rightly though that was a few months ago,bit further than you'd probably prefer but worth a look and i know people who use him and though he is a bit serious he is a good vet, hope this helps...

usually when i find young, whether in kittle or born because if the ferrets find them it becomes hard so i wrap up then, luckily not seen any sign yet...usually just into march though...
