let see your collie greys pics
BORDERSCOT replied to carp king 23's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Here's a few pics of my 3/4 bred Collie Greyhound. He's my third Hancock puppy - the first two I had way back in the 80s and 90s were by Taffy and Richard Jones. I had some of the best fun I've ever had with my two old dogs - the Taffy pup is my avatar pic and was the best dog I've ever had. This new pup is 7 months old next week. He's sired by Kubla and is 25 and a quarter inches at the shoulder and weighs 54lbs. He is fanatical about retrieving, jumps like you'd expect and want a dog to jump. And I'm sure he'll provide both myself and my son Jack with some great sport in the future. -
Hiya and welcome - lovely puppy. How's she bred and where'd you get her. A total stunner. Good luck with her.

Hiya I'm looking to purchase two/three young jills as and when they're ready. I'm in the Scottish Borders and am happy to travel for the right ones. Hoping someone can help - PM me if you can. Thanks.

Good winter hares are certainly no the same beast as summer hares. I personally think folk should be ashamed killing beasts out of season.

My dogs have rolled in allsorts over the years and if they live in it can be a pain. This might sound crazy but I did once watch someone on the telly saying tomato sauce gets rid of the smell pretty quick. Never tried it - but the premise probably is that it'll smell better than shit??? Dunno if it has to be Heinz tho???
-
Great fun this lot isn't it - one thing you can guarantee in the world of lurchers and terriers is that you'll find bullshitters in abundance. Just can't think why someone would want to come on a forum like this and fabricate stories. I must admit when I read the initial post I thought what a load of f*****g bullshit this is!!!! I wonder if the other Hunting Life sub-forums have their share of Pinnochio's? I bet they don't. Maybe Hunting Life should have an Annual Award - Best Bullshitter Rosebowl. Better than the telly this lot??? Keep them coming Terrier man mark.

Yeah - aplogies to mate I never read it properly. Sorry.

7 MONTHS???? Maybe that's the problem. You say the dog is fit and well and been running behing a van??? It's only 7 months and it's 3/4 greyhound - the big dogs shouldn't be entered too quick and this is too quick in my opinion. How fit can your mate expect the puppy to be at that age.

Our local course is quite heavily wooded with narrow fairways - so the rabbits always have quite an easy passage to safety. Had a bit of success in the past but far too many unsighted dangers for my liking. Just give it a miss!!!

My 3/4 bred collie greyhound pup is 7 months old next week and he's 25 1/4 inches at the shoulder!

If your mate's dog is fit, looks well and in good nick - I'd maybe tell him to get it checked out for any underlying probs eg heart lungs. As running out of puff after 8 runs - even for something with 3/4 greyhound - on a rabbit and front legs giving way underneath it isn't the norm. Just a thought?

There was some good lurchers bred out of Taffy and Richard Jones i.ve heard that there some good dogs coming out of Kubla Yeah - both my Taffy pup and my Richard Jones were good dogs. The Taffy was the best of the two - as brave as they come and he was a great single handed fox dog. My Richard pup broke his back leg when he was 5 in a freak accident and I had him put down. My Taffy died in 97 aged 10 and I have been without a lurcher until 2010 when my son and I travelled to Sutton Coldfield to buy our Kubla pup. I think he'll be a good dog. I love the Colliex always had them

Thanks jackrabbit - yeah he's a nice pup. Everything's good so far. Let's hope it continues.

Nice pup this one - how's it bred? Strong eh?

Just general dossing around - nothing much. Try to go where there's not a lot going on and above all take it easy. Rest and recuperation should be the main aim in the quiet months.

Hey - do you mean you have a dog which looks like my old dog (in my avatar pic) or that you had an actual litter brother or sister??? He was a good dog. Best I've had or probably ever likely to have.
-
Thanks mate - yeah he's in good nick. Can't wait til next winter!!!

Thanks mate hes 18in he is about the same weight as a whippet bitch I think looking at him He's a really nice well marked puppy. I'm sure he'll do a real job for you. He looks the type. I'm off to take photos of my 3/4 bred collie greyhound puppy in a wee while. I'll post them later today.
-
Nice puppy mate - how tall is he at the shoulder and what's his weight?
-
I certainly wouldn't be worried and I definately wouldn't be setting myself up for future trouble. If the pup does start chasing rabbits at such a young age it may well get quickly frustrated and that can lead to a dog that 'speaks' when in pursuit. And that's not good. I'd wait - enjoy your pup and I'm sure all will be well.
-
And the deer at the end - what happened? Did they catch it????
-
That's not too old mate - the dog on my avatar - a 3/4 bred collie/greyhound was still killing foxes at 10 years old. I bought him from David Hancock (he was a Taffy puppy) in 1987 when he was 8 weeks old - he was 3 when he killed his first fox and killed his last during the winter of 97. Good luck

condition and fitness of coursing dogs
BORDERSCOT replied to poacherman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yeah - all of the above but I reckon rest and recovery are both vital. Like any athlete, running dogs need proper and adequate rest and recovery. Sleep for competition athletes is right at the top of the tree and it should be the same for dogs whether they're competitive coursing dogs or hard grafting workers.
