  1. I agree that it isn't right to leave a dog for 11 hours and if you have to do so you probably shouldn't have a dog. As for your ability as a dog handler - I don't know you but you certainly didn't deserve those earlier comments!?!?
  2. So, what do you do with them when you go to work?
  3. How's he bred, how old is he and have you had him since he was a puppy? Keep on prising his mouth open with the command LEAVE! Get back to basic retrieving training with a dummy. Get him to fetch it and when he gives you it/you take it off him say LEAVE! He'll soon associate this command with giving things up. Good luck mate.
  4. A few pics of my 3/4 bred collie greyhound puppy. He's 7 1/2 months old and is 26" to the shoulder and weighs almost 60lbs. He's going to be a big boy when he's done growing. He'll be a year old in September. Looking forward to the winter - going to be fun? He's been a total pleasure to train. He's seriously obedient. Great recall, his retrieving is faultless, he'll sit, lie and his stay is now up to 300m (unsighted). He jumps like a stag and he has a fantastic nose. But jesus christ he's certainly not been the easiest dog to live with (understatement) but it'll all be worth it come the dark,
  5. There was a thread on here a week or so ago asking what makes a good dogman. Well mate your post just about sums up what being a good dogman is all about. Major respect to you. I know some folk who wouldn't think twice about swapping/changing/getting rid of dogs at the first hurdle and they call themselves dogmen!!! Don't think so!!! You stuck by your dog in the most traumatic of circumstances and you were there for him. Best thing I've read on any THL forum yet.
  6. Lovely looking puppy Tom. How old is it and how's it bred?
  7. Hard ground can be a real problem at this time of year especially for big bulky dogs or saplings. I'm lucky as I'm minutes away from thick grassy moorland with plenty cushion. It's like running on cotton wool.
  8. I think your puppy came from Hancock? Right? How old is she now? He feeds a complete food that is 25% protein. I'm not sure what Chudley's comes in at protein wise but I'd check that out - I don't think it'll be 25%. I think the higher the protein the less you have to feed - that works for me. If it's cheaper and not as good quality wise they tend to need and eat more. Beta puppy food is excellent but dearer at almost £30 for a 15kg sack around here. I feed new puppies either Beta puppy or Gain Puppy and Sapling (£19.00 per 15kg sack and small pieces ideal for puppies) both are around the
  9. Cracking looking puppies mate luck with them?
  10. Oily fish, mackerel and sardines, olive oil or cod liver oil will help. If the skin is dry with sore bits try Sudocreme it's really good.
  11. 3 grand a minute - that's a shocker!!! So that's £90,000 for half an hour - f**k me!!!! That's a serious waste of public cash eh? f*****g shameful!!! For what??? To catch a few lads running game??? We all know they have better things to do - and they know it too???
  12. f**k me!!!! How much does it cost to scramble a b*****d helicopter in a case like this. What a waste of public money??? Best value my arse!!!
  13. So am I right to think that on rows 11, 12 and 13 you are knitting to 18 wide. If not can you perhaps give me a breakdown on how this 23 row net works out. Appreciate your time. Thanks. Basically as you describe start with 8 and increase each end of every other row so by 10 I have 18 on the meshboard 3 rows at 18 and then start decreasing every other row back down to 8 Y.I.s Leeview Cheers mate - really helpful. Appreciate your time.

  15. I see quite a few guys on this site knit their own nets. How long does it take to complete each net with 2" mesh 14 wide and 18 long? I realise some will be quicker than others but was wondering the average time to knit a net. Thanks
  16. Always thought poaching with ferrets isn't very effective and asking for trouble. If you've 20 purse nets set and a couple of ferrets to ground you can hardly slip away if you see a gamekeeper coming and looking unconspicious ain't easy either. Best get persmission.
  17. Hey mate how old's your dog. It's a tough one this. If he was noisey on a chain he's just as likely noisey in kennels. How long you had the dog. Does he have something to occupy him like bones etc? Is it any better since you posted?
  18. I use Gain 28 and think it's great my 7 month old collie greyhound looks tremendous on it. I know one of the country's top greyhound handlers and he feeds Gain too - so if it's good enough for top level racing greyhounds it's god enough for mines. I have used Gain Puppy and Sapling and feed Gain 20 to my old terriers and they love it. I feed raw chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, rabbit or tripe with Gain 28 and add either brown bread, pasta or rice I also give tinned mackerel, tuna, or sardines with egg whites two or three times a week and feed meaty bones, whole chicken quarters, chicken wings and
  19. I think you shoulda started this post off by writing - "Once upon a time" and ended it with the familiar close to countless childrens' stories and well-known fables - "The End"
  20. How do you train a ferret never to lie up. No digging - hey mate you ain't done much ferreting.
  21. I heard this years ago - except it was a Chinese in Edinburgh and the dog was a Labrador???? Bit of an urban legend I reckon!!!???
  22. Do you guys feed once per day or twice. I have a 7 1/2 month collie greyhound and I've been feeding him twice daily since he was 6 months (he was on four meals until 16 weeks then three until 6months). Sometimes if he's isn't seriously hungry he'll turn his nose up at the morning meal (7am) or eat half-heartedly. But by nighttime (6pm) he's up for eating his dinner. Would I get away with feeding him once daily? Or do you think he'd still be better with two meals per day? Maybe I'm too just good to him????? Thanks.
  23. Pretty sad - but certainly no surprise. Some folk seem to thing getting shot of a dog, at the first hurdle, problem or failure is the easiest route. Get rid and then get another. And they'll have no hesitation in bigging themselves up as 'dogmen'!!! I reckon a true dogman is the guy who learns to adapt and work around a dog's faults and foibles (and they all have them) and accepts that these same faults and foibles may be a measure of his own shortcomings!!!! I reckon bull xs are the most popular by far!!!
  24. Great piece. Some good pics too. I'd love to have a shot of that someday. And great weather - it'd be a novelty hunting in conditions such as those.
