  1. Cheers all! She took her first rat yesterday too To those who were asking - she's 3/4 whippet, 1/4 bedlington. Hasn't met ferrets yet, but I'm going to pick up a couple and get her used to them over the summer.
  2. Now thats a little cracker. whats in that dog similar to the pup i have just bought very nice pup butty Thanks , she's 1/4 Bedlington, 3/4 whippet. Your pup looks great too!
  3. Just a little update on my beddy/whippet - she's my first lurcher, but I think she's doing pretty well for her age. She's topped out at 18 1/2" tts - she was the smallest in the litter, so it's no real surprise. Stockbreaking is going well - she is completely steady to poultry, even offlead. She walks past sheep, cattle and horses with no bother, and I hope to do more work with her once lambing season is over. This morning she caught her first rabbit! Just a baby, but she retrieved it live to hand very nicely. Bodes well for next season . All in
  4. Mouse, 11 months, 18.5 tts
  5. Just an update on my little 1/4 beddy 3/4 whippet pup - I last checked in when she was seven months old (here http://www.thehuntin...et-7-12-months/ ) She'd been getting a bit switched off on her retrieves, so I eased off on retrieve training for a month or so and just focused on getting out and about with her, giving her more freedom offlead now that she has a solid 'halt' and recall. I don't know if we'll ever get to her dropping on command, she's a bit of a princess about getting her tummy wet, but she'll stop dead in her tracks and look back to me when I ask her, which is good enough f
  6. Seven months worth of retrieve training .
  7. Very nearly, yesterday. We were walking along the old railway paths, the pup walking mostly off-lead but on-lead past fields with stock in them. We spotted a field with a pony coming up and I called the pup over. Just as I'd clipped the lead on, some lads on dirt bikes scorched up behind us. They're not supposed to use the paths, but I wouldn't even have minded so much if they'd slowed down as they passed - they didn't! I don't THINK the pup would have bolted or chased them, but you never know. Glad I didn't have to find out!
  8. 3/4 whippet x bedlington, 8 1/2 months old, about 21"
  9. How are you doing for drainage? Decent drainage will make your life much easier.
  10. Ok, this is the sort of thing I was thinking for a retrieve over obstacles An ideal run: Lurcher is sitting by the handler at O. A dummy is thrown to X. Handler releases lurcher, who clears the sheep hurdles, lifts the dummy and immediately returns it to hand, again over the sheep hurdles. I'd be happy to supply weighted rabbit fur or canvas dummies for anything that does take place
  11. Albert, I'd be willing to help with a lurcher obedience trial at Shane's Castle. I've helped out with the beagle pen at Shane's Castle numerous times over the last few years (niece to the Browns). I'm very new to lurchers myself though (only got my first last year and she's still a pup) so hopefully someone with more experience will step up to actually take charge! What type of competition would people like to see? Basic sit/stay/heel/recall? Retrieves of dummies with delivery to hand? What about retrieving over obstacles?
  12. Little update on my lurcher pup Mouse. She's 3/4 whippet, 1/4 bedlington, bred in Durham, and she stands 20" tts currently, so she's going to be small. I've been around working beagles and terriers all my life, but this is the first time I've had a lurcher pup to train. I'm hoping she'll be useful on rabbit and rat in the future, but we have a bit of a way to go yet! She's reliably retrieving fur covered dummies, which is great. She has near 100% delivery to hand indoors, but when we get out into the fields she sometimes gets impatient and spits the dummy/ball out before I can take it
  13. I used a clicker to shape my lurcher pup's retrieve and delivery to hand and it worked really well, I'd use it again in future. Different strokes for different folks, but I'd personally rather use a clicker than (e.g.) ear pinch to get a solid and reliable retrieve. I understand why others wouldn't be interested though.
  14. She's my first lurcher, so I don't have much to compare her to, but I think we're making decent progress. Her basic obedience is good, she's steady around stock and very enthusiastic about retrieving balls and toys outdoors, (and fur/rabbit feet in the kitchen). I'm planning on bumping her up to dummies in the next few weeks, but I was wondering if I should give her a break from retrieving once she starts teething? Advice welcome, thanks in advance
  15. Retrieving 'Marking' a bee Sit stay She's also retrieving fur (rabbit paws) and steady around our chickens and cat. Not too bad for her age! I've stripped most of her puppy fuzz out, but this was her when she first arrived. She's going to be hairy. Don't suppose her breeder's on this site? Whippet dam, we mentioned going out with the beagles..
  16. The original afghan hound imports were very short coupled (before the show folks got their claws into the breed and ruined it), and they were bred for endurance and agility on mountain and desert. Some european racing lines have preserved the old type But - sadly - the majority of afghans today look more like this
  17. Thanks for the replies guys, really interesting stuff! And yup, she's a tiny wee thing at the moment and has a long way to go, I'm just a worrier . She's retrieving her toys well at the moment, and last night we tried her with a rabbit foot in the kitchen and she retrieved it really nicely too. She's also getting used to chickens and the house cat, just waiting on her last jab so we can head over to the cousin's farm and work around sheep/cattle. I've grown up with beagles and foxhounds and have definitely seen hounds with huge conformation 'faults' perform well in the field without inju
  18. Hi, This is my first lurcher pup, 3/4 whippet and 1/4 bedlington, 8 weeks old in the picture. I've noticed that her pasterns are pretty upright, does anyone have experience running a dog who's very straight in the pastern? Hoping to run her on rabbits, night and day, and I'm just a bit worried she'll be more prone to wrist injuries. Cheers, here she is;
