Not really, I bought 40 four foot half inch round bars in 1985, cost, less than £40. Made my runs with them, and they are still up nice and strong now, "how do you maintain this" you might ask, "painted once a year". In another 20 years they will still be up, and just as strong. But, if money is the deciding factor, wire might be the better option. "Investing is simple, but not easy"

Doxhope posh yeah that`ll be right

I use bars on all my pens and runs, they look better and more proffessional, theres no give in them and they last forever, all they ask of you is a coat of black hammerite every year

Throats and windpipes of animals are suitable for dogs, as long as they are fed fresh and tender, and cut them up into small pieces. Once you cook them or freeze them they can become quite indigestible...

Hi Smuge, great idea of training in a narrow ally, I have always used this, both outside and inside my house, a good tip here though, put a fence up half way along, not too high, going off the size of your pup, 12-18 inches would be ok, throw the dummy over it, and you are killing 2 birds with 1 stone, jumping and retreiving. Its not so much the height at thats pups age, just getting it used to stepping over it. As its age increases, increase the heigh of the obsticle.

Yip learner, totally agree, that was me in my plucky youth, how my first dogs never yapped, blew up or were spoit in any other way is beyond me....All my first dogs were coursing hares at around 6 months, but never a yapper. First 3 dogs I ever had all went on to old age, still lamping them a 12 & one at thirteen, mind you not for our usual numbers, just to keep her active a bit, and even in old age when thwarted by rabbits they would have easily taken in their younger days, no noise. . Ive also worked pure bred deerhounds, catch rabbits long before their first birthday, these never murm

Beginning to think so, as I said, it always stuck in my mind as being a lovely dog, if Handcocks dog were all like that, he would be flying. Try to find pic, I think it might have the boys face on, some of you in fish supper land might know him, but it was around late `s

Hey vermiator, please dont get me wrong, collie crosses, as any other crosses have their uses, I know, some lads Ive visited or been out with swear by them. I remember judging a raker smooth coated one years ago (Handcock bred) at Mindrum just over the border, it was like nothing I had ever seen before in a collie cross, what a length, the brother to it was also there, maybe not the scope as the first one, but again a nice beast. These were the 2 best examples Ive seen of this cross. I will try and find the photo of it, have it somewhere, I always appreciate a good dog, no matter what cro

GO ON THERE STABS, But honestly, I couldnt be doing with a yapper, call me old fashioned if you like matie

Affraid thats the problem when people are breeding commercially, quantity rather than quality rules. Everyone genuine breeder sets a goal, weather it is to breed a champion show dog, great workers or what. Handcocks goal was to produce as many pups as possible, lets face it he wasnt doing anything special, first crossers of any breeding are the easiest to produce, you just have to have a greyhound bitch, a collie dog, deerhound dog, Bedlington dog etc, and you are away. Shaun is right however,, the better working examples are bred from workers, where graft proves which ones are best, and sor

Rightly or wrongly I have always been a one for early entering, but I never have a set age for this, all pups are different as should be treated as such. I have had lurchers that killed their first rabbit at 6 months, a deerhound xgreyhound bitch, normaly a fairly slow at maturing cross took her first hare at 7 month. If early entering can cause yapping, good fortune has shone on me thats for sure. In nearly thrity years I have never had a yapper. In my area before standards dropped a bit, yappers, along with quitters and sheep killers were never tolerated. Like other posts have mention

I did this poem when I lost another bitch, old age this time, 13 when she died. Its already been posted on another site, but you might not have seen it.. BES A BLACK SLEEK SHEENE WITH EARS PRICKED AND EYES BIG AND WIDE THE FIRST OF MANY, SHE WAS MY PRIDE A HEART WAS BROKEN AND TEARS WERE SHED THE DAY SHE DIED, A GARDEN HER BED CONVERSATIONS WE HAD WHEN WE WERE ALONE IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT BEHIND A WALL OF DRY STONE HER BEGGING FACE STARES AT ME WITH A SMILE FOR A PAT ON HER HEAD, A RUB OF HER EAR THIS WAS ALL SHE WANTED, SHE KNEW SHE WAS MINE I KEPT HER, I FED HER, I

Im so, so sorry mate. Ive had one knocked down, its a most horrible thing to happen, I cried like a baby, nearly threw the towel in altogether. She was only 8 months, deerhound cross, just killed her first hare 2 days before, such excitement, then that. Its like loosing one of the family. Watch what your doing mate,

Put photo on, away to resize it, too big, back in a mo

Your right youngin, I made it a rule years ago, to never trust anyone with two legs...Time and time again your dog will prove to you that it is your best buddy, like Winston Churchill said, dogs look up at us, cats look down at us, and pigs treat us as eaquals... Nice un matie, but its right, you do look like a porn star :11:

Thats right roybo, you asked avalid question, and got some usefull answers there, the better examples coming from people with experience in the breeding, with nothing more than to help you, thats what the site is designed for, we all look forward to your next question, A tip, Judge any dog by its virtues, NOT by its shortcomings, fault finding is easy, anyone can do it...
