I go around the countryside a lot, as part of my job, and as part of various activities like ringing birds with the BTO, bird watching, harrier nest watches and the odd mole job, Ive never seen so many rabbits out during the day, I sometimes think there must be no one doing rabbits now...but there are. In our hayday it was the 60`s - 70`s with longnets at night, the end of the 70`s to the mid 90`biggest numbers was with dogs and the lamp, and during these times sightings of rabbits out during the day were small..My father hunted with whippets and longnetted pre myxamatosis times, and he could

Excellent stuff there mate, again an istance showing that Minshaw stuff wasnt just a one dog wonder, (which a lot of us new anyhow) producing dogs that also made the grade is testimony to the bloke..Dogs now and again are produced that are well above average, but, cant produce similar quality in their offspring, but when you hear of good dogs producing good dogs, well, somethings right...and when you see chalks like the one above, just stand up and applaud I was once asked 'do you really need a dog that can kill 50+ rabbits in one night'? No you dont, just carry on sitting on your comfy sofa

Some petty arguments when running a lurcher club
doxhope replied to doxhope's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Now your talking, no hidden agendas and you know exactly what you are going to get , A FAIR CRACK OF THE WHIP.. -
Ive always worked on the premise that 2 are just as easy to rear as 1, but for training, I always did this seperately, but when fully set, I lamped regularly with 2 dogs on the same night to share the work load and to make comparisons, and on a few occaisons I lamped 3, not an easy feat

Some petty arguments when running a lurcher club
doxhope replied to doxhope's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Well, for anyone who is remotely interested, lamper B won his argument, and lamper A left the club, and he was an experienced lurcherman, who was around long before the tall tale tellers started going down the fens with their quitters, and I left shortly after, not so much because of this issue, things like having my telephone conversations taped, people wanting to have boozy nights out rather than fully paid trips to the Waterloo cup, ALC finals and discount dog food for all members, all added nails to the coffin Moral of the story is; KEEP AWAY FROM JOINING LURCHER CLUBS -
Yip if you get a dog into the 30`s and 40`s this is a great achievement, you certainly cant catch 100 if theres not the numbers to catch, where I come from I know of only 5 dogs that have been into the 50`s of rabbits in one night since the early 70`s, and less than 10 that have been into the 40`s, and Ive been out with 149 different dogs in my time, and know almost everybody here that has kept lurchers. 100 rabbits in one night I doubt I will ever see in my lifetime now...but it is a possiblity for a good lurcher to achieve it a lot of novices or people who dont hunt in areas where there a

My deerhounds let cats walk over them, my lurchers would do if I were there, but I wouldnt trust them.. Was outside one day and a rabbit came towards me with a cat chasing it, I spurred the dog on as any respecting lurcher buff would do, with the visions of a rabbit pie and another chalk for the dog, she ran and killed the cat. Most lurchers will tolerate cats if socialised correctly, others might never..Could depend on a dogs breeding weather it will tolerate cats.. Great pics above from Molly.. The sooner lads realise that cats are not legal quarry the better, dogs that kill cats now ar

Some petty arguments when running a lurcher club

Hey gaz dont worry, I got out of it along time ago -
Yes Tomo we got them numbers, and similar numbers regularly, after that night we were out 2 nights later, and after that, three nights off the trot. Our dogs got big hauls, and on the way back from lamping we would park up and wait for day light to break, to get a couple of course of hares before we went home. I am a numbers man through and through... respect for lurcherman Im affraid goes with how many times they have been caught poaching, how much they have paid in fines or the number of times they have travelled to the fens..What we did in the north east, and Minshaw did in the north west

TOMO IT IS TRUE THAT DOXHOPE TOOK HUGE BAGS , IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO , ON LAND THAT WAS CRAWLING WITH BUNNYS..AN OLD LAD I NO FROM ASHINGTON HAS PICS OF THEM TIMES Yip matie we did get huge bags of rabbits, hares and deer yes there was a lot of game about, and there was loads of lurcher teams going out to the same land, and carrying dogs back, not big hauls, funny how nobody else travelling there never got the same returns. It wasnt that long ago, up to the mid-nineties..Too many one for the pot men and part time poachers knocking about now to get the same numbers, and of course not th

Some petty arguments when running a lurcher club
doxhope replied to doxhope's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hi Joe, up the road from you, Northumberland. But, the club was the Northumberland & Durham Working Lurcher Club Lamper B aknowleged the fact he seen the other lads dog catch the rabbits, but stuck to his guns the rabbits should be there at the end of the competition..That was his argument. "If you were out for numbers, and killed 20, and when you got home there was only 19, you have only 19". What if the rabbit wasnt dead as it went in the bag and escaped, weve all seen our dogs catch a rabbit, turn the lamp off or swing the beam to look for the next one to chase as the dogs carrying -
Some petty arguments when running a lurcher club
doxhope replied to doxhope's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hi joe, know exactly what you mean, but, it was a newly formed club trying to get some work, as well as shows for its members, a lamping competition had never been done before, so, after the vote of the committee concerning this argument, a rule was ritten in to all future events so they could be run smoothly and enjoyed. So which lamper lost his case? Which lamper and dog walked away from the club with their tails between their legs? PS Joe, dont forget, these blokes had been walking with each other all night, and seen every chase..So lamper B had actually witnessed lamper A`s dog catch 4 -
Perhaps it was one then - it certainly had the markings in the right place and the upland area I saw it seems right - up there with the grouse, stonechats and wheatears. No mate dont think its a ring ouzel, there is a lot of variations creeping into blackbirds, Ive seen similar in towns, as a lot of folk have, but the ring ouzels Ive seen are not like the plates in some books, ie a jet black bird with the ring around its neck, they did have a light edging to the tips of their feathers over their whole body, but nothing like your photo http://www.galleryofbirds.com/scillies2002/ringouze

Some petty arguments when running a lurcher club

Like I said at the beginning, some of the things that cropped up were unbelievable..Talk about school kids, and these were grown men..I will put some more up later. Yes it does put you off joining clubs, it not just lurcher clubs, Ive been on committees of bird clubs, juniour football clubs and its just the same, well, maybe not so bad. I known some great lurchermen over the years, that would have nothing whatsoever to do with clubs..I would certainly never have anything to do with the running of one ever again. It was this sort of petty squabbling, plus a few over sized ego`s and social cl -
I was once the chairman of a working lurcher club, and as a committee member had to co-deal with some arguments that ranged from petty to darn right ludicrus. We had a rabbit lamping competition, Rules, competitors walk together, both dogs ran 5 rabbits each, runs taken alternatively. In the event of a draw, it went to sudden death. All seems quite straight forward dosnt it? Or does it? Lamper A`s dog caught 4 rabbits, lamper B caught 3. All rabbits were returned by the respective dogs and put in the mens carrying bags. Contest over, back to the car, fill the form in, signed by both

Ok Ian, you do a great job. Pity about the chat room, I dont go on, but I have done in the past on other sites, I know what you mean though, I was once a chairman and a secretary of a working lurcher club, the pettiness is un-belivable at times, it like being at school..Your right to do what you have done mate, even if it spoils it for genuine folk who want a good bit crack

Hey Al, youre right, we had some bantys years ago like that, in the 1960`s cant remember what kind they were, but remember the females being game sods, and the cockrels were bad little beggers...

See alot of blackbirds with colouring now, thats a beauty, wish I had bred it myself, put it back to the parent that produced it, and see what happens... Seen ring ouzels in north Northumberland, not a lot mind you, seen a lot more when I was on hen harrier nest watch a month or so ago..

Hi speedy, some of the other posts hit the nail on the head, meat does go off quicker if left in bags, it should cool, and if left altogether it retains the heat, gets squashed and dosnt look very appitizing, especially seeing the inside of the skins green Remember someone might be eating these.. Hope you get loads more bunnys, we used to get hundreds with the air rifle, a most under-rated way of obtaining large numbers of rabbits/game..especially with what is available now, it was airsporters, webly mark 3`s, murcurys and later webly vulcans that we used, but these more than did the job

Have had time to study your mates deerhound matie, its not a Doxhope deerhound, but there is definately Doxhope in it..its either stock from David Hearne or Shane Hourihane or possibly Billy Kaveny. There are some smashing working deerhounds in Ireland now, probably more so than over here, the hardest thing is keeping it that way, I hope your mates does well with them

Ive NEVER, NEVER left the rabbits I catch in a bag till the next day, its an insult, game should be treated with respect, mine are usually gutted and laid in lines, I say usually gutted, as some game dealers Ive dealt with ask for rabbits with gut left in..But mostly they are gutted asap, as I use a lot for mine, and other peoples table. There is nothing worse than see-ing clear plastic bags cram packed with rabbits squashed up against the sides.
