the rescue centre's are full of lurchers & I think its better they have a home as a pet where they are well looked after than be with some of the idiots in this game who you wouldn't trust to look after a stick insect.

I had a bitch like this & she was brilliant on the lamp & ferretting & would pick up the odd hare but was never entered on fox. 24 tts & about 20 kilos. I would definitely have another.

my father always told me that before & during the war rabbits were either trapped, ferreted or netted & spaniel/lurchers were the only type of dog to have. Would love to find a decent working line!

17 day old muntjac vs 100 pound lurcher!!!
Chunky11 replied to TALKCHEAP's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That lurcher is the spitting image of my old bitch Fudge, she was gsd x dh/gh, 30 in to the shoulder, 60 kilo & hated fox but soft as butter with lambs, pups & livestock. I would have another like her tomorrow. -
Very nice?

I had a gsdxdh/gh 30in to the shoulder & the best fox dog I have had, she was also a brilliant dog in the house & great with kids & all other dogs. I would have another tomorrow, I think finding one would be the problem!
-
Well done young man, a credit to you,a few more like you would give the lurcher world a brighter future?

Working Beddy pup at a very good price should be snapped up. Good luck finding him a good home!

The biggest problem in Devon is all the people who move here because they like the way of life & then they get here & want to change it. Most of them are tree hugging bunny lovers!
-
I live in north Devon & all types of hunting & fishing here. Mainly good farmers who support hunting. A stock broken dog is essential,i wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

If he was a border collie he was much larger than what you see now, about 24 ins tall & quite heavy build. Most farm collie's in north Devon were similar but back then most farms were mixed stock, cattle, sheep, pigs & poultry. These dogs would be expected to work what ever livestock you had. I suppose there wasn't the choice you get now as when you wanted a pup you would buy locally!

When I was growing up an old boy on a local farm had a large collie to work with cattle, he wasn't much good on rabbits but anything with teeth was never a problem. There must still be some old-fashioned collies around but finding them is a different matter!

I had a deer/greyxgsd hated fox, I now have a bed/greyxgrew great on rabbits & both were easy to live with & would-be my choice if I was starting out now!
-
Fair play to him & his family, a pity these other do gooders don't put there hands in there own pockets first.
-
Beddy/grey X grew. I only use mine ferreting & lamping rabbits but cant fault him. He is also a great family dog so cant ask for more really!
-
Beddy/greyxgrey/wpt. He is good at the job but could do with more coat. I used to have a col/grey/wpt bitch & she was probably my best ferreting companion, always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

Very nice pups & the collie marked bitch would be my choice. Beautiful, well done, good breeding & good rearing always lead's to quality pups!

I shall be watching this with interest. I have always liked Buck & your dogs so this could be a very interesting liter.

Birds Buck over a dh/gh would do for me. Handle anything I would need.

Stock netting, 1 strand of barb 1 inch above the ground & 1 on top, posts every 6 ft & 1 strand of electric at 16inch high, that keeps even my big boar in!
-
I had a bed/greyxcollie/grey. She never killed rabbit or hare & always retrieved to hand but any thing else was killed before I got to her. I think all dogs are different but she was just a natural
-
Some great looking dogs on this thread, Birds Buck has always been a favourite & Malc 1 that 7 month old pup is some looker! If its sister grows into those ears she will be some dog. All the best with them & I look forward to hearing how they progress.

If all breeds had to do a working trial to the standard they were originally bred for not one of the dogs at this years show would qualify. They need to go back to the genuine dog men & women who work there dogs for there foundation stock & start again! The kennel club,it's judges & vets should be in court & charged with animal cruelty. Perhaps the RSPCA should be concentrating on this rather than trying to persecute the hunters of this country.

Sometimes its the simple ideas that work well! In my case it was more down to money, young family etc. Now days, being an old fart it's easier to buy what you need!
