My mrs bought me the Longnetting book by this chap a couple of years ago.. utter shite, so the DVD must be of the same calibre !! I think too much time was spent in the pie shop and not enough on the job in hand ! What is going on.... Pie eaters, lads in great army coats who look as if they missed their vocation in "Dads Army", and more than a smattering of those who want to re invent the wheel, anyway I must go and get my dimonte studded realtree jacket on !!

Yep, Pat is as good as gold and his gear is good.. I usually pop up a couple of times a year for various bits. He's very accomodating and knows his nets..

Same here £2 a rabbit, paunched only. He is a really good traditional butcher and will take all mine to supply his other two outlets. He always looks after me at chrimbo as well with a nice joint or a few pounds of his shop made sausages.

Looks good, but as mentioned earlier, change those cable ties to 1.5mm wire, or they will be chewed ! And take off those spikes from the drop door. best of luck, DL

Try to follow any runs from a point of origin if you can (Hedge, Gorse, Gates, Breaks or Gaps) Yes, the comment about digging was for a friend of mine who has subsequently phoned me !! Good luck, DL

Chefs going mad for squirrels
devonlad replied to Matt's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Age does affect the cooking time of meats and how it has lived also needs consideration. As a help in gauging age of squirrel try this, if you press either side of the jaw at the back where the upper and lomwer jaws hinge, if there is a little amount of flexibility it will be a youngish squirrel, if however there is no flexibilty in the jaw, you have one which is older and will need longer cooking. Due to the squirrel's musculature gained from its lifestyle it will benefit from a slow cooking method in order to tenderise the meat and extract all the flavour, so stewing or braising will b -
A tip would be to coat your rabbit joints in a little seasoned Plain Flour before frying, this will just help slightly thicken the gravy.

I am hoping to get a few chickens in for family use.. I am looking at having no more than 6-8, and would prefer some of the traditional breeds such as "Cornish Game" or similar. Does anyone have any plans for suitable housing to accomodate this amount of birds ?? Looking to have nest boxes, roosting area and detachable run area. Any pictures/diagrams or ref's to specific publications would be appreciated..

best to go and take a look at the field , it will all depend on rabbit traffic As moley says, but also the more experience you acquire the easier it will become to spot those new or lightly padded runs in varied conditions and undergrowth/paths etc.. You will get "your eye in" with a bit of experience. With regard to making rabbits bolt without ferrets, I think there maybe a bloke on here who likes to dig deep holes, so maybe he could help !!

Try reading Glenn's pinned articles at the top of this section. You should find it will help.

Nice gadget, but a pure luxury... what would the Mrs do with her evenings if I deprived her of feeling my needle grow in her hand !!

As we all know there are no shortcuts to doing a good, responsible, respectful and "traditional job" ! I find this a completely bizarre and OTT system ! with apparently no regulation ! I can perhaps see its benefit in the USA with vast areas of prairie undermined by prairie dogs etc.. but as a method that is where it should remain, in the USA !!

Type in "Rodenator" on You Tube, then you will see what they are all about...

devonlad replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in General Talk
it was lovley dipped in soup I'm glad it was not a sort of "salty, cheesey" after taste, otherwise he would of had some explaining to do !! -
I think Ancestry.co.uk do a free trial period, so if you have a list of stuff you want to trace beforehand then just work through in the free trial period, I am afraid I don't know of any free sites or info, but thats not to say there aren't any !

There's nothing as complex as families !! might be as well to start with the other side of the family first, if its any less complicated ! just to get you into how to get started. With regard to your newly discovered grandma, it might be as well to go back from her name, it may be that there was some uncertainty over the father.. In which case you would be as well to follow both names back if possible, there was a lot of stigma attached to certain things years ago, that perhaps nowadays we don't really worry about so much these days..

Thats where I started, family records birth cert's etc, then local records offices. The Ancestry site is good, but you have to pay.. though there are certain tariff's which work out quite cheap if you look around the site. But start with the local and family stuff first..

As L&L has said if its been bred from working stock it should not be too much of a problem, if you have the opportunity to enter the ferret with a more experienced one it will help the youngster learn the ropes a bit quicker. Also make sure you have your jill fitted up with a locator collar, otherwise you could be in for a long wait... also let her get clear of the hole entrance before calmly picking her up to try elsewhere, nothing worse than a skulking ferret who dives back in the hole when its about to be picked up. Remember its a new experience for her, so allow her to have a b
