trenchfoot replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs

One of mine has a fair dash of saluki in her. Never been on a slip in her life. A dog will find nowt whilst on a slip

I'm in mine everyday. All day. they do make a difference. I've had my fill of sub standard boots. thats why I'm known as trenchfoot

That oryx will be departing wearing them as earings any minute soon

mine are usually knocking around and about on the farm for most of the day which keeps them ticking over in the off season. In the next few weeks or so we will start topping the rush beds around and about I start with one dog at a time trotting alongside for an hour-ish. let them run owt that gets up. A good few early starts and late evenings at that game, building up the time and the number of dogs seems to do the trick. Still have to watch the heat though.

true, but when you have had a taste of honey.......

Them brandecosse will leak like a seive sympatex is terrible lining I've never had a problem with sympatex. works well enough in the Altbergs. Its more to how its integrated into the boot rather than the lining itself

I have a Ridgeline smock. Great if you are not moving around too much. Otherwise you'll sweat your nads off. I also have a Swedeteam smock which is Gortex. Very breathable, great hood and cuffs. Limited pockets. BUt fantastic when the weather turns absolutely foul. For day to day wear, you will not go far wrong with Nomad, But they do take some time to dry off when they get wet.

both me and the wife wear Haix Tibet boots on the farm. They are narrow fitting and a little solid in the footbed, but very comfy. I have had one pair nearly 3 years now and they have stood up to everything. Mud, sh#t, grafting, never leaked and very strongly built. I even got the lace hooks caught in a length of sheep netting being rolled out/dragged by a tractor on a fencing job. Dragged my 17 stones 70 yards across the field and never made any impression on them. It didnt even bend the hook. Well worth the money

Favored Line Of Border Collies For Lurcher Crosses?
trenchfoot replied to Dan McDonough's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Most of the collies on the farms around here are bred just like that, and I use the term collie sparingly! maybe not the best at gathering sheep off the moor, but mentally they are consistently more stable than many of the pure bred dogs I have come across of late. I have a young lurcher bitch bred down from that type of stock and she is possibly the most even headed, if slightly feral in outlook, collie cross I have had the pleasure (or displeasure!) of owning. -
I feed raw meat which is ..... 100% meat ....... thats like asking "whats the best Porsche", and been told "Isuzu"
-
MIllies wolf heart is possibly the best range of modern complete dog food. grain free and between 60 and % meat.

I've got one. going on 10 now and retired. She was my first dog after the ban came in. Working collie dam to 1/4 beddie sire. 19' and 15kg. She has been a lot of fun to work, good nose, robust and plenty of drive. For rabbiting in woodland and bushing she has been good, but on rough moorland and open ground her size and lack of pace has been a short fall. The last 7 years I have worked her alongside bigger dogs as a bushing dog and she has been a useful addition to that type of work. Due to running on rough ground and trying to match the bigger dogs attempts she has aged rapidly, and whilst th

Marry in haste, repent at leisure. Loosing a dog is hard, but rushing in to fill that space with a rebound decision is a high risk path to follow. As much as admire saluki lurchers, they would not be my first choice with which to enter the working dog world.

no lol, when Buck wound up he will go far on quarry, so they be good to keep tabs on him . lol Or get a faster dog
-
I had a second gen 1/2 cross. As an out and out running dog he was limited. 22" and 50lbs. But for pesting duties I have seen few dogs as capable of shutting down its quarry or as quickly. In and around forestry and clear fell he was very adept at mugging game too. Biddable, with a good nose. I would have another like him in a heart beat. But the be all and end all of running dogs they are not. But then non are.

I feel for you fella. That lonely trip home is a heart breaker at times

Are Aussie cattle dogs native? Not at all but i didn't used to call myself or my dog coursers and sally was not a particularly chosen target for her and DB there's many native breeds and their crosses that can be and have een used to catch a hare but like you say these days its all about making a name for yourself and killing,no matter what folk say to walk into a field with a saluki x is not taking it to old puss on a level playing field imo.As for summer hunters they won't ever be anything but folks with dogs and not dog men.. only pulling your chain

Summer coursers, driving land and the internet are main reason games as f****d as it iswho wants to go during the winter when its wet and cold? If you cant course in your vest whats the point in going lol. Hare coursing is banned ,why should coursers regulate themselves to winter running only,...............do bank robbers only go robbing in the winter,? I know hares bellied up and unsporting and winter hares are the best,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but illegal in winter is illegal in summer. On saying that its October to Febuary for me if i went for a run. Theres a big difference between illegal
